    Hello I speak from the states.
    I love your admiration for finding a solution to the faulty oil filter issue. BMW recommends 10k service intervals but many know that that’s too long especially for certain driving conditions.
    Also, unfortunately we have many drivers that neglect maintenance so reports of crushed filters may be derived from some of those drivers. I change my oil every 3 months and my oil filter has always came out flawless. And I always use genuine parts courtesy of Fcp euro. Cheers

      Have this in mind when you change your filter. In reality, it shouldn’t matter how regularly you change your oil - there should be zero risk of it failing like this. It is simply down to poor design.
      Don’t be complacent when you change your oil - this only needs to happen once to totally destroy your day and . . . . your car!!!
      I have since found out there is a service bulletin from BMW for removing the filter - turn it two full turns anti clockwise, two turns clockwise and then remove slowly.
      Clearly this is to break the O-ring seal without pulling the filter apart. Before I found out about this, I planned todo the same but two full turns is way too much - if the filter is going to break, it will be well on the way to doing so after two turns.
      I plan on a quarter turn each way, followed by a half turn undoing, quarter turn doing up, half turn undoing, quarter turn doing up, followed by a gradual undoing all the way. This will loosen the O-rings with minimal risk of the filter separating.
      Good luck and I hope you continue to be lucky.

    Dropped my car in for a service today, and the garage found this issue with the filter. Thankfully the work to replace it is being claimed through BMW so I haven’t had to pay a penny .. this time.
    I’m worried that at it’s next service interval the same issue will occur and I’ll have a big bill to pay to replace the oil housing as BMW might not be as generous the second time around (even though it’s purely a design failure).
    A shame to have such a frustrating issue linked to such a good car!

      To be quite honest, it’s worse than pathetic but even more frustrating is BMW’s limp-wristed efforts to sort out a very basic design problem.
      I will be servicing my own car moving forward because out of warranty, I’m not sure I trust my dealer to tell me if they break a filter.
      I’m going to look at somehow modifying the factory filter so that it doesn’t break.
      Very very poor - even Lada could make a better filter!!!!!

    Thanks for sharing the vedios on your findings. I guess it may mean for DIY, you need to change the oil filter earlier than the regular schedule per the iDrive. Hopefully, this means less deteriation when the oil filter is being change over and the bottom piece will not come off, which will be a headach.

    • @ybliga

      You can change your oil after 5 minutes and two miles - the risk remains. There may be some reduction in risk by changing the oil more regularly but it is only small. I am on another UK-based forum and we have had 4 breakages in the last month. This problem is here to stay until BMW pull out their corporate finger, get of their fat behinds and fix what is, in essence a stupidly simple issue to fix

      @@ybliga Looks like for DIY, one needs to have a long pick tool or a long screw ready when ever the lower rubber mount does come off on removal.
      What a headache.
      Just wonder how does the varies BMW dealerships deals with this issue on an ongoing basis as there's no apparent fix to the OEM / after market part ATM.

    Have you tried the MMR lifetime oil filter for the b58 engine, it is made from stainless steel

    Perhaps the MMR stainless steel oil filter can help? Care to do a review of it?

    Great break down (no pun intended) on the issue. Any updates on your thoughts to remove as safely as possible? I think you said BMW's TSB of 2 turns loosening, 2 turns tightening, and then remove, is too liberal and to do maybe a quarter turn, then a half, etc.. Thanks.

      @ybliga  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is what I plan to do but as yet, haven’t changed my filter again. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly but reports are still coming in of OEM filter failures - the problem is ongoing. It is utterly bizarre that BMW seem incapable of sorting this problem once and for all!!!

      @@ybliga yes, I read about one report just yesterday. Sheared off right at the bottom. I would be curious to know if anyone has had an engine failure after fishing out the remnants; I’ve seen many reports of people getting the bits out and carrying on, without any consequences (yet).

    Is it am idea to glue the new filter parts in the botom part together

    • @ybliga
      @ybliga  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I researched the material. It is a form of glass-reinforced polymer which doesn’t bond with normal adhesives.
      I did wonder if a hot probe could be used to melt the interface to produce a series of “spot welds” and researched the melting temp of the material.
      I tried it on an old filter with partial success. The problem is that it resulted in small pieces of only loosely adherent material around the “weld” and I would worry these could break off and travel downstream with the oil.
      What it really needs is for BMW to get off the fat behinds and spend 50 cents designing a new filter that doesn’t disintegrate!!!! 😡

    What about aftermarket filters like mahle mann etc

    • @ybliga
      @ybliga  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mahle is a disaster - I bought and tested one. It absolutely WILL fail and I suggest you steer clear.
      Mann us manufactured to identical OEM, indeed, I suspect it is a rebranded OEM item.

      @ybliga  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bars1512 my guess is there wil be a plethora of factories in China making any number of cheapo Chinese filters that are rebranded with obscure brand names. The main brands such as Mann, Bosch and OEM will by and large be coming from the same couple of factories in Algeria & Europe. Mahle is the exception but their filter is total junk - I have written and told them and they even bothered to reply and so who knows, they may yet change the design!!
