I’ve noticed this before with other successful Pro’s turned business types, they only look forward. Thinking of the future and where they can take skateboarding or where skateboarding is going. Were as a lot of guests talk about the past and how good or big they used to be (Hosoi/ Valley are prime examples) At the very peak of Vert skating Hugh BOD Boyle was The World Champion and never even mentioned it, that is the mark of a truly humble human being and gentleman.

This was great. Bod was such a common nickname for British kids in the 80s, especially smaller kids with short haircuts, the theme tune to the cartoon is permanently ingrained too in many an over 40 year haha
I love this conversation. My boy and I have been skateboarding for 17 years and we just had a similar conversation over a beer last night. Just acknowledging how amazing this sport is compared to the rest.
I don’t consider skating a sport, because in sports it is mostly competitive and a race to see who is the best. With skating there is so much individuality involved and emotional attachment that is subjective, it is more like music or art where no skater or type of skating is the best, you can appreciate all of them and everyone and choose to do it how you want to do it.
@@peacelovebrad my homie* no kids yet. That’s sick though, I bet the kids will continue to love it if it’s something they can do with their parents. Most of us around my age (29) and older didn’t have parents who also skateboarded.
As a skater who grew up skating London in late 90s/early 00s this was the best episode yet! Having someone talking about South Bank, Meanwhile, Shell Centre, all my old stomping grounds, talking about saving the South Bank, repping the Long Live South Bank sticker in the back was all so sick! Bod is the fucking man, true legend!
I remember getting my first pro board in 1989, a Bod Boyle Santa Cruz board (Stained Glass). My Dad bought it for me at the local surf shop, High Tide, in the Mojave Desert California. The board was absolute magic. These new skateboarders do all these extreme tricks today, fancy this and that, yadda yadda, but they just do not have the inception magic the old school 1970/1980/1990's guys had. It was more than extreme nutty tricks then, even in the early 90's it was a pure feeling. No tech, no over the top BS, just old school magazines and pictures, sitting on the back streets with every kid in the neighborhood, everyone outside everyday. These guys that added to that magic, Bod Boyle, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Natas Kaupas, and many more, I would buy them all dinner any day of the week if I came across them in public. Im so thankful for those days.......
was not aware of this gentleman, super glad i watched it. this guy is incredibly smart and on point with everything regarding his views on skateboarding and it’s potential in so many ways. skateboarding has become so multifaceted, it’s crazy but amazing

I’m about to get a cutting edge partial knee replacement surgery since it sounds like I had the same issue as Bod, torn ligaments and meniscus which lead to years of bone on bone and constant swelling. If it cure’s me and I can skate pain free I’ll recommend the surgeon so someone can pass the information to him. Another great Nine Club. Thanks and keep it up :)
Such a great episode. Love hearing the business side and seeing his passion for skateboarding and interest in it evolving. Thoughtful human being. Love hearing the stories from the 80's. Glad Kelly asked about his name. I was always curious. Billy Ruff would be a great guest too!!
I remember seeing Bod in a record store in SF, way back in 2000.......recognised him instantly. He's a genuinely lovely fella. Used to love watching his segments on the vids back in the day, such an inspiration to go skate some vert! Bod, Chris Miller and Hosoi bossed it back then!
Julian Davidson may be one of the coolest pros I’ve met in person. He was so nice and cool that it changed how I saw his skating. He’s always been gnarly but I just enjoyed watching it that much more, knowing he’s a nice person. Love this episode, didn’t know about Bod but had to go back and watch after this. Thank you Nine Club!
Not the right place to post this wheel packaging idea, but it just popped into my head. Cardboard bolt (for lack of better term) that feeds through the wheels to hold them together… maybe minimal cardbord sleeve over them with one or both ends open for graphic reveal. Or just a nice cardboard box to fit wheels with riding surfaces touching. A horizontal window for graphic reveal.

Your killing me Smalls. Didn't talk about his amazing skateboarding. Thrasher cover 91ish. Watched Bod get so good and become a top pro on ramp. Euro rip. Nice guy too. Respect.
The discussion about getting more pro skaters paid better is a tricky one because it will require changes in the industry people won't want, or don't know they want until it's too late. It's an industry built on the backs of young people chasing a dream who are willing to not only forego looking out for their future selves, but often destroying themselves in the pursuit, and companies will always be glad to take advantage of that. The people who have been through it should be coming together and working out how to make the path better, namely a riders union that has guaranteed minimum salaries as well as healthcare for riders. If a company can't provide the basics for a skater, they shouldn't have that skater on their team. Skating keeps wanting to pretend it's all punk rock bootstraps, but it's time to recognize this is a mature industry and start doing business as such.
