If we could change the components of a 15k budget pc. Why we couldn't customise a phone as well. The reason modular phones were never launched is the big business people who want to profit from the word "latest" by fooling their consumer. I was in the hardware and software development sector for 7 years and it was possible but they didn't !!
While we were aware of those projects, and at some point, wished to own one (at least), the major thought most of us were stuck on the probability of losing any of its parts. That was my biggest concern regarding the modular phones. Also, while Moto was there with a bunch of modulars, buying all of those cost a huge sum of money. Rather from a normal user's viewpoint, it's better to compromise on some features rather than spending that much.
god modular phones was such a dope concept and i remembered seeing it years ago and was like "dude this is the future" and really really wanted one thennnnnn it just never happened which is a shame :(
Yeah, Google bought it and killed it after 2 years. I guarantee some empty corporate suit thought they're not profitable enough to impress the investors.
@@TheHopelessGeek its like stadia i loved that platform with a passion i brought basically every game and dlc on there and spent thousands of hours on it and google did literally 0 advertising or anything like that and then they just killed it off even the employees who were working on stadia diddnt know till literally moments before the announcement blog they did
I’m hopeful that phone repairability like the Fairphone will catch on with the big companies, but I’m afraid it’ll go a similar route as this. We have seen minor improvements, like the s23 having a pull tab for the battery.
It was never a failure they tried to show that its a failure because product cost will certainly reduce because a guy who has that kind of phone he just need upgrade a part whhich is cheaper compared to buying a new phone which is certainly not a higher profitable to the mobile indusrry ..but for costumeer it's a blessing
I feel even if the project had succeeded that only a handful of people are willing to keep a full drawer of backup components in case their phone falls on the ground and they lose something. And I feel occasionally when that happens maybe some pins on the phone itself get damaged or like bend. That being said the phones nowadays keep adding more functions to the phone and here Google's project was reducing the function abilities , yeah you could swap things out but they said it being less powerful cause they have to compromise. And what you see with these kind of phones is they never come cheap as they are a new innovative thing on the market. So you pay more for less power but more flexibility . Doesn't seem like an upgrade to me but more a random direction switch. And the vid where they explained the technology said they aim for the 5 billion non smart phone users , that was a pretty bold claim as well ... as there is also a big amount of nowadays smart phone users that don't have a 1000's buck smartphone either cause.... well other costs in life like rent matter more. And yes maybe Intime it could grow over the years and have this doable with high performance phones as well. Till then I guess we should just keep it in the oven a while longer and let it bake :)
That's not a total mean of a Modular Phone. Neither main reason. The primary reason of a modular phone is to change the spare parts without any problem. Not necessarily interchangeable.
Sad so an good idea just disappear or were just 1 year online . I was like I buy one today but phoneblocks don't sell anymore . I want to buy phone blocks in media market.
That would be so dope! Instead of releasing a whole new device with incremental upgrades, companies can just make that new part available. But I guess the margins are fatter on selling whole $1000+ phones 🤭
They will not launch it bcz people will stop buying new phones and it will hurt big businesses , with modular phones only modular parts will sell . Qnd they make more profit selling new phones with same old tech polished.
Let's just admit it. Most people are sheep. They'll buy what companies push. The main reason why a modular phone never happened because companies couldn't figure out how to make it as profitable as the current non-modular ones. They can upgrade just a couple of features and sell the whole phone again. Profits drive technology. There just wasn't enough motivation for tech companies to do this. If a perfect world, where things like customer satisfaction and environmental benefits took priority over profits, we'd definitely be using modular devices.
That's true. Google bought it and tried for 2 years. Probably some corporate MBA muppet thought it's not profitable enough for the shareholders. So they axed it.
We don't have them in india i think. The only flip phone from nokia we have covers the basic features like calling etc, but there are some keypad phones which support UPI@@TheHopelessGeek

It's how Apple keeps their profits high, by making repairs difficult and raising the walls around their products. Other company saw that and followed.
15k isnt a budget pc, thats the price of some servers.
I believe it's in Indian Rupees, not USD.
@@bits360wastaken For context, 15k INR is around USD 175

Honestly, for all the hype and glamour, that company is surprisingly under-managed
@@TheHopelessGeek yep it’s a shame
Woah, didn't knew about this Modular smartphone concept. Thanks for this info!
It won't be out anytime soon, but a concept that was popular back in 2016
@@TheHopelessGeek Correct!
I was watching this on my LG G5 right now. I wish there was a modernized LG G5 with the same design but with a modern processor and newer OS.

Yeah, that would be very cool, to be able to repair and replace components easily.
There still may be modular someday, the best components to swap would be battery, screen and processors.
Yes. With the new EU laws coming up in 2027, we will hopefully see newer, easily replaceable batteries
@@TheHopelessGeek next part that break is gps module. It will be cool if we could replace it.
Really? How does the GPS module break often?

Yeah, I don't see why a company like Google couldn't pull it off. They certainly would have all the resources they'd need.

WTH! I didn't know about this style of phone. I agree, they should have allowed more time to develop this modular design.
Yeah, they pulled the trigger too soon 🫥
That's not a total mean of a Modular Phone. Neither main reason.
The primary reason of a modular phone is to change the spare parts without any problem. Not necessarily interchangeable.
Hm.. perhaps that would be called swappable. Modular would imply you can customise it, too.
I was so hyped for Ara. RIP
Same. 2016 was such a cool year 😭
We need fully modular phones.
Right to repair is needed!
Yes, it'll be so cool! Easy upgrade and repairs ✨
I think it will work today more than that time
Probably. I wish they didn't axe it so quickly
Sad so an good idea just disappear or were just 1 year online . I was like I buy one today but phoneblocks don't sell anymore . I want to buy phone blocks in media market.
Yeah, it was short-lived. Google bought it, tried to make it profitable, then killed it to appease stakeholders.

First bring something as simple as changeable battery... 🙁
We might see something like that again soon, after 2027, due to European mandates
