For those asking about customisation of the light patterns and defaults, it can be done but it's not simple if the control unit doesn't support it already (I don't know whether or not it does because I haven't used one of these RGB LED strips). It's possible to program a microcontroller, such as those used in an Arduino, to send color-change commands to the LED strip. The main requirement is that the microcontroller must be able to run fast enough to send the short pulses which the RGB LED strips use as color-setting commands. Unfortunately, this method requires you to either learn how to program or to get someone else who knows how to program, to do the custom programming for you. (The control unit is just an infrared receiver and a microcontroller which does all the hard work)
Love your intro. It's slick and quick to the point. I can't tell you how many times I back out of tech videos or tutorials that have long + obnoxious intros.
I got the exact same RGB strip a few moths ago, almost same price! I used it on inside the lid of my aquarium and I must say: they are just perfect for it! I used the entire strip to make sure that I had everything well covered of course. The plants are growing wonderfully, no algae, healthy fish, etc. Which kinda surprised me to be honest since I've used other water resistant (NOT waterproof, there is a big difference!) RGB LED strips who have cost me a hell lot more who gave me a bunch of headaches after a while (failing lights, remote not connecting anymore, LED's giving up here and there and this after a very short period of time). Very happy with this one, and my fish too! Cheers.
Thanks for these videos, Matt! It's awesome to see different ways to add to/personalize one's setup. This is extra helpful for me right now since I just moved and I am re-renovating my bedroom setup :D
Alexander Stanley yeah, this is also why anyone with a samsung phone that is s5-s6 range or many LG phones would be able to control all of these with their phones
These strips use infrared for communication. Thats why they need a line of sight to control. And the usability isnt a intended feature, its just cheaper to produce controllers that are exactly the same. The controllers dont need to do some fancy recognition of their remote and with that have less parts that cost something.
How convenient! I was looking for some LED's on Amazon today and the only ones I could find that seemed to be good were $30+. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work :D
They also have light changing light bulbs that come with the same kind of remote as the light strips. They cost five dollars each and look kind of nice when you use them at night.
Philips Hue offers basically the same stuff but with way more colors and compatibility. I own a lightstrip from Philips and it is really worth it in my opinion, but this video is targeted to people with a low budget.

nice explaination really helps me.. i was searching through the internet to figure out how to apply the led lights your explaination rocks.. thank you MS Tech
inexpensive rgb lightstrips are fine, but you won't get the compatibility that you would with something like hue for example. Being able to program multiple lights to my preferences, as well as not need multiple remotes, is a huge deal for me. If you're only having one or two lightstrips than definitely go the inexpensive route, otherwise convenience becomes a big factor. Hue is overly expensive, but easy control of all lights is huge for me.
No, you can remove them if they are stuck on with adhesive... But he used staples because the adhesive was shitty he said, meaning that the adhesive wont stick for very long.
I want to get some kind of LED/RGB lighting for my new gaming PC case that has a side panel window so I can show off all my components. Kind of sad I know but would look better then just having a plain old PC. Wondering what RGB/LED lights the TH-camrs use for their gaming PC's and was curious if this would do the trick if I plug it into my power supply instead of the wall. Many thanks in advance! :)

+isak hs you can buy a power plug converter. suppose you live in the US and the cable you bought was UK, you can get a UK to US adaptar thingy and plug it in and it will work, it will look bulky but it gets the job done :)

I'd say go for the WS2812B "smart LED" strips which have each LED individually addressable. These strips don't cost much more than plain "dumb" RGB strips, you can get 5 meters for $15 on eBay pretty easily. The thing about WS2812B strips is that they require a controller board to drive the data input and generate the patterns. I've written code for both Arduino and ESP8266 microcontrollers that can drive these smart LED strips and connect to a program I wrote on the PC to generate patterns and flash them to music (that also integrates with Razer and Corsair RGB products, among other things). If you have a bit of DIY in you and you want the ultimate in controllable, customizable RGB strips, you can't beat WS2812B or compatible individually addressable strips.
So i was thinking of the the main setup and 2 extra strips so will both the other strips work with the same one system or do i have to buy 3 system total?

you shouldnt of cut off the very end connector of the long led strip first... you just wasted the left over led strip with no connector now.you could of reused that part. lmao does no one realise this?
you said you did research but you bought WATERPROOF rgb strip. Thats why the 3m backing won't hold that well because of that clear coating over the top of the leds. Also the smaller 24 key i believe is better imo. The 44 key if you have multiple units of them in the same room it is hard to turn them all off at once. (i have the remote plugged into my harmony remote ir). I was having issues with one turning off then trying to turn off the others and the same one turning on. I swapped for the one with an actual on and off button and they work better for multiple led strips. Good video, going to buy because of the video, but I have to tell you. At the end when you stated that the one remote can be used with all 3 of your lights, it's not because of quality. Its actually cheaper to make it like this, because all of the remotes and lights are the same wavelength.
I mean he's not planning on moving them anytime soon so having them secure so they don't fall is kinda important. Plus, if he changes his desk but wants to save the strips, wood staples are really easy to remove.
