Whatever Happened to Jack of Newbury?

- Jack of Newbury is a legend in Newbury. But few people know anything about him. I'm fascinated by mysteries and I decided to research the subject. There are lots of resources on the Internet and suitable search phrases will uncover many web pages. The problem is that original documentation is thin on the ground and, with the passage of many centuries, interpreting that evidence is hard. Since I am by no means a historian I am indebted to all those academics among us who have spent so many hours, months and years researching for the books and webpages I used for my video. I apologise in advance for any inaccuracies and would be glad for comments below about such. On the other hand, I hope you enjoy watching the film as much as I enjoyed making it. There are many more fascinating stories about the buildings and people of Newbury to be unearthed. It's a pleasure to publicise them.

Apparently I have incorrectly credited Newbury Museum in the video since it has been “West Berkshire Museum” for some years. My apologies.

Another really interesting video. Thanks!
Fascinating. I'm so glad to hear Jack was a compassionate man who hadn't enjoyed putting those poor protestants to death. Your piece brought tears to my eyes.
I was expecting the end bit about Jack's descendent to lead into an interview with him.
These holders of Newbury's history should definitely give you interviews and let you film inside the oldest parts of their houses for posterity and to give local people a sense of their history.
Thanks Cathy, I’m inclined to agree with you about Jack and the Martyrs. I’d love to make more films but they are very time consuming and obtaining permissions is very difficult. There’s another in the works about Shaw House. It should be ready by the summer!
Well put together Phil.... Nancy and I just watched it, and although we don't live close to Newbury, we enjoyed it very much, you have a gift my friend, you are the Richard Attenborough of our video team, truly gifted😎
Hey, thanks @Mark Warren. That’s a real compliment from someone I really admire!
Very informative. Thank you Mr Cutting for putting together this wonderful video.
Thanks Nicky. I appreciate your kind words!
Lived in Newbury most of my life, really enjoyed your videos keep them coming
Thanks! Appreciate your compliments.
Thanks Philip, I really enjoy the talks you give. I learn a lot about the history of places near where I grew up. I grew up in Compton and went to high school in Newbury, but have lived in America for over 50 years.
Thanks Chris. I appreciate your kind words. I know Compton well. You won't recognise it now. It's changed a lot since the Research Farm closed and was sold for housing.
I love this video, Phil, thank you for sharing! I work at the Globe and we all loved seeing the front of the pub in your video :)
Thanks Laura. I’m sorry that I cheekily overlaid my title onto your sign! I love what’s been done to the Globe. I hope it’s successful after lockdown. I’ll come and buy a beer from you!
@@PhilipCutting we loved it! We look forward to seeing you and hopefully seeing some more history of Newbury videos from you too!
Its true that the name ΄΄Jack of Newbury΄΄ doesn't ring any bell to me but i enjoyed so much your vid. Great narration, documentary voice, loved the places, the photo, incredible buildings .....i think i am going to be there and stay for a couple hundred years. GREAT work Phil. Waiting for more
Thanks Timos. Your comments are valued!
I've lived in Newbury all my life, being born in Parkway. Thank you so much for your videos they are brilliant.
Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate it. I’m working on one about Shaw House but it won’t be out until the spring. They take a while to do!
This is so cool, I live in Newbs so great to learn the history 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Phoebe. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Newbury is rich in fascinating history.
Can't believe I have only just seen this! Loved it!
Thank you! I’m glad it was worth the wait!
Very proud of you and happy to know more from you. I love history. Without your research things like this will be unknown. Keep doing this and if possible broaden your territory. Thanks a lot.
Thanks Abbey. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was a lot of work but worth it!
Coming from Kintbury, this was and is very interesting to me. I loved this, it's brilliant. Thank you Mr. Cutting.
What lovely comments. Thanks Liz.
Nice one Philip. Very interesting, and beautiful views of the area. The reply of Julins Palmer was very heartwarming. It is good to remember that there were people faithfully remaining true to the Christian faith despite persecution even in those times.
Thanks Neale. I thought his words were very interesting. It’s worth Googling his name. There’s a fair bit considering he lived several centuries ago.
Excellent report many thanks only criticism is that the music is too loud and intrusive
Thanks for your kind words. Apologies for the intrusive music. I'll monitor my levels better in future! :-)
Informative - Not a lot people know this history of Newbury - keep going Phi :-)
Thanks! I appreciate your comments. I enjoyed your films too! I yearn for a drone but I'd not get enough usage out of it!
Great video as always Phil.
I saw 2 houses in here that I've moved with Ian!
Thanks Lucas. It's good to hear from you. Those days, working with you, were good times!
I too love this video
Thank you for viewing it! It’s amazing that Jack’s descendants are still thriving on the same estate he built up, centuries ago.
