The Millstones in the Wall (History of Crete)
On a recent holiday in Crete, I discovered so many fascinating ruins that I had to make a video. Filmed entirely on an iPhone 11 and edited with Final Cut Pro.
Warning for those of a nervous disposition: Since I was on holiday, I appear throughout the video in shorts, tee shirt and a hat!

Who Shot King Charles? (A History of Shaw House in Newbury)
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
For years visitors to Shaw House in Newbury, Berkshire, have been fascinated by the brass plate that apparently hides a musket ball aimed at King Charles 1st during the Second Battle of Newbury. But does it really? I went on a search to solve the mystery and, on the way, discovered some very interesting facts about the Jewel in Newbury's crown. For more information about historical and cultural...
Newbury Artisan Market 2022
มุมมอง 5312 ปีที่แล้ว
On the last Sunday of every month, Newbury hosts an Artisan market, filled with stalls selling delicious world-food and hand crafted wares. It's such a great experience that I felt it needed to be celebrated! On the bridge I encountered Paul, who can create syncopation from everyday objects.
The Legend of Newbury Castle
มุมมอง 2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
My name is Phil Cutting and I am fascinated by the history of Newbury. Many people have asked me about Newbury Castle and, since its origins are shrouded in mystery, I decided to research it. The legend of Newbury Castle is so powerful that it exists as a stylised image on the Newbury Town Council coat of arms to this day. But... no one knows where it once was! Of course, I'm not an expert; but...
Whatever Happened to Jack of Newbury?
มุมมอง 2.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Jack of Newbury is a legend in Newbury. But few people know anything about him. I'm fascinated by mysteries and I decided to research the subject. There are lots of resources on the Internet and suitable search phrases will uncover many web pages. The problem is that original documentation is thin on the ground and, with the passage of many centuries, interpreting that evidence is hard. Since I...
Oldest House in Newbury
มุมมอง 12K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is about the very oldest buildings in Newbury and how Dendrochronology has enabled historians to date them accurately. It all started with “Lockdown”. I’ve always kept very busy in my retirement but my wife and I fell into the “vulnerable” category so we had to stay in. Previously, because I’m one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, you might have seen me manning one of our display stands in Nor...
Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre
มุมมอง 2824 ปีที่แล้ว
Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre is part of a collection of flooded gravel pits near Newbury in the UK. Carefully managed for wildlife, and in parts for fishing, it’s a pleasure to visit. Armed with a Panasonic FZ200 with its absurdly long, stabilised lens (bought for very little money off eBay) I collected a few shots and edited them in less than an hour to produce this little piece. It’s not ...
Cornwall and the Eden Project.

Tenerife
มุมมอง 1787 ปีที่แล้ว
A recent visit to Tenerife prompted a video record of some of the most amazing natural spectacles on the island: From the barren volvcanic slopes of the south, patrolled by Pilot Whales and dolphins, to the dramatic green precipices of the far north, Tenerife is far more than a beach resort: it's an amazing jewel in the Atlantic Ocean. Filmed in RAW on a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera with 14...
No.3 Stocks Cottages - Tony Knight
มุมมอง 4227 ปีที่แล้ว
Across the road from my home is a tiny 18th century building that, amazingly, provides homes for three families. While I initially began work to create a documentary about the building, the people that live there were too fascinating to ignore. Tony Knight lives in No.3 and applies his scientific and artistic background to recreating lost skills.
Ray Pople

Ray Pople and his wife, Vera, came into the truth in the early 50's and devoted themselves to the full time ministry. Latterly Ray served as a valued trustee for Jah Jireh Charity Homes. He will be sorely missed.
Ireland in December

Ireland is beautiful whenever you visit, but in early December, it's particularly wet and windy. It was certainly too wet to take out my camera so I collected these views with my iPhone 5s.

Great video Phil, incredible that it was done using a mobile phone! ... Are you sure you didn't work for the BBC? 🤣
HAHA! Thanks Richard. Please let the 'BBC thing' be our secret! ;-)
This is fantastic, Phil!
Thanks David. I’m glad you enjoyed it and were not put off by the shorts! 🤣
Great video, Phil! Very interesting historically, and very well produced as ever!
Thanks Dave, it was a bit rough tbh; but I hoped that the shorts would distract people from the dubious production quality.
You made history come alive... even if you did make a rookie mistake .😊
Haha! Thanks Anna. Apparently, Greek is pronounced as you see it!
Sles❤kr
Thanks!
Very interesting! Thanks!
Thank you. It’s an interesting story and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

So many gold stars! Wonderful! Seriously though, thanks for your message! 🙂
fascinating. thank you!
Thanks Sandy. Appreciate it! 🙂
Great work mate!!! And great helpers u have. U make me wanna get married again!!!! (To Maria off course) will u make my film?.
Haha! Of course! Let me know the date and I’ll be there! 🤣
Lovely Story
Thanks! They’re a lovely couple. 🙂
Gorgeous! Such a romantic story!
Nice one Philip. Good to see a "Cutting" production again.
Thanks Neale. A somewhat stressful departure from my usual highly scripted productions. Four cameras and several hidden mics... hours of material... a real labour of love! I would have liked to spend more time on it but deadlines were too close! :-)
Very interesting, many thanks, Philip. Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks for your nice words. It’s a lovely place!
I was there yesterday. Beautiful place, I work for the local authority so got to exploring on my own.
I agree, it’s an amazing place! Thank you for your comment. 🙂
Very interesting & enjoyable. As a Newbury person, I love to know what I can about it because it has so much history & I don't think the residents are made aware of just how much there is, it's brilliant to find this on TH-cam, I have learnt something new, great commentating as well. Thank you
Thanks for your nice comments. I love to get feedback and I’m glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
So many nice things. Don’t see any olives
🤣
Thats my old school used to have lessons in the room with the plaque
Another great video Philip, it’s a shame they wouldn’t let you spy under the plaque!
Thanks Matt, I totally agree about the plaque! I’d like to see the old bakery too. 🙂
Informative and well-presented as always. Many thanks for sharing!
Thanks @mirekgosney187 I value your opinion! 🙂
Nice one Philip. Good to see you haven't lost your touch!
Thanks Neale, this one was quite a challenge: such fascinating stories that it was hard not to make an epic!
As ever a considered and excellent mini history lesson. I hope Shaw House put a link on their own website as you deserve lots of views. Thanks for making these great little films.
Thanks Niki! The video is expected to be added to their website but the wheels grind slowly! 😅
Another great video, good job Philip.
Thanks Kieran! Nice of you to say! 🙂
Superb documentary! Fascinating. Thank you for your research. Great production, too.
Thanks Dave. Your cheque is in the post! 🙂
Great and informative as always Phil, it’s a shame they got rid of the waterfall fed canal, I’m guessing the reason was because of the construction of Church Road judging by where it appears to be located?
Thanks Lucas! I suspect the water features were expensive to upkeep and subsequent owners modified them until they no longer ‘featured’. (Did you see what I wrote then? 😂)
My dad was born and raised in Newbury but alas ended up in USA. Thus am interested in your postings. Samuel Freeman and Emma Sharp who ran one of the woolen mills are ancestors. Thanks.
Thanks Cynthia. Wow, you’re almost famous! Kersey cloth was a significant feature of Newbury in past centuries.
Fantastic Phillip, many thanks!
What? You must be the first viewer! Congratulations! Sadly there’s no prize. Thanks for your kind words. 🙂
We love this Philip! Would you mind if we shared it on our social media channels?
I’d be delighted for you to use it! Thank you for asking. 🙂
Where were the beaver dams?
Go to the Lock Stock and Barrel Pub and ask to see roof rafters above the Cellar.
Another great video Phil, these are so professional.
Thanks Niki! It’s very nice of you to say so! 🙂
@@PhilipCutting you have a great presenting style, very natural and excellent editing. Your passion for the subject shines through as well, but at the same time you seem to be able to get the information across in a way we can all easily follow. You’d have been an inspiring history teacher !
@@sfc282d Wow, thank you! I’m blushing now! Seriously though, Newbury is such a fascinating place: it’s not very big but has strong connections to some of the most important events and people in history. I have so many stories to tell but no time to do them justice. 😕
Fascinating. I'm so glad to hear Jack was a compassionate man who hadn't enjoyed putting those poor protestants to death. Your piece brought tears to my eyes. I was expecting the end bit about Jack's descendent to lead into an interview with him. These holders of Newbury's history should definitely give you interviews and let you film inside the oldest parts of their houses for posterity and to give local people a sense of their history.
Thanks Cathy, I’m inclined to agree with you about Jack and the Martyrs. I’d love to make more films but they are very time consuming and obtaining permissions is very difficult. There’s another in the works about Shaw House. It should be ready by the summer!
Fab!!!
The opening scene you walk in front of the old bus station buildings. I used wait there to catch the bus with my Mom . A small sandwich bar used to sell the best ham sandwiches on the planet!.
Ah, those were the days! Now there's a modern bus station across the road from there; but no ham sandwich bar!
Newbury has so much history to it - this is a fantastic watch thanks
Hi, thanks for your compliment. Sorry for the delay in responding! All the best.
Fabulous work. As a Newbury lad this was really great to see. Excellent presentation and very engaging. Do keep up the good work. Newbury is a fascinating town with a wealth of hidden history.
Thanks Jonathan. This was a lockdown project so it’s harder these days to allocate time for them. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Shaw House is in the works.
We have some of those stools at our market in Wokingham. Interesting to see where else they go
Thanks for your comment, John. It sure is a fun event! I love Wokingham. A very pretty town. But expanding fast!
Nice one Philip. That food looked sooo good. I put weight on just watching the video!
Thanks Neale. The food is excellent. It’s become a regular treat for us since it restarted this year.
Good to meet you today, very good video, you would definitely give David Starkey a run for his money
Thanks for you kind words! I enjoy making the videos, though I’m not an expert! You’re very talented yourself!
Very interesting, I enjoyed watching this. Thank you.
Thanks for your comments Tom. I’m delighted you enjoyed it. It was fun to make. 🙂
Dear Philip, thank you for this informative video. Good to have a local guide who is a brother :)
Thanks for your nice comments! Maybe one day we will meet in person?
@@PhilipCutting Dear Philip the first chance to meet is coming soon. I write more in an email :)
Another really interesting video. Thanks!
Great little video Phil! So, the only way to really find out more is to knock on Speen house door with a shovel. ! I don’t live far away at all, and love exploring google earth, and Speen house is definitely in a substantial setting. I suspect the exact area overlooks Donnington castle, as you can just about see it, looking to your left, in between the two roundabouts over the A34 bridge. Maybe there was a connection of some sort..
Saying that, it appears newbury castle would have preceded Donnington before it became crenellated..
Thanks Cristian, Donnington Castle is another whole can of worms! But that’s for another time! 🙂
Not just a fascinating story, Phil but, unusually for TH-cam videos like this, your commentary is slick and professional. Looking forward to watching more of your videos now you have got me hooked (I am an ex-Newbury resident now living in the Far East).
Thanks for the compliments Pedr. I love to make them but they are very time consuming. This one turned out to be a bit of an Albatross, taking a year to create. Hopefully I can make subsequent ones more quickly! There is a lot to uncover in Newbury. Roll on the summer!
Another great video, it’s so interesting and learning with you about my home town. Thank you so much, enjoying finding such interesting history,
Thanks Alison. It’s nice of you to say so. 🙂
My thoughts: Ulvritone/Newbury was on the edge of the wide marshy bog which was the Kennet pre- conquest and impossible or at least very difficult to cross there. William the bastard, having come up from Winchester via the downs and wayfarers walk , crossed the kennet west at Hamstead marshall where the river was narrower and planted at least one castle there to guard the crossing, headed north then cut up to Wallingford and then London having wasted large areas behind him to cow the saxons. The mound at speen may have been slightly later to dominate the east west roman road and the track that runs past Donnington castle site and up to Oxford and Ermin street.
That’s a very interesting concept. Thanks for sharing. There is always so much extra detail that surfaces after I release these videos that I often want to go back and reshoot! 😂 The thing is: I’m not an expert, I’m just sharing my research in a fun way.
@@PhilipCutting Love your stuff Phil, keep posting.
Absolutely brilliant. As a Newbury lad, raised, but not not born here, this is fascinating. I may have been 18 months old when I came here but it will always be home to me. It's a wonderful town with so much history and so much to offer those who chose to live here. Fascinating history. Wonderful to see the history explored here.
Thanks for your comments. I’m amazed that Newbury is linked with so many events and people that changed the course of history.
Great as always Phil 👍.
Thanks Lucas. It’s been a year since the last one. Fascinating legend.
An interesting story very well told and presented. Paul.
Thanks for your kind words! It was fun to make!
