- While exploring the currents in the Briar Patch, the Excelsior crew realize the Tholians have a greater presence in the patch than previously thought. An ambush on a planet surface leaves Barrett racked with guilt and it is up to his friends and colleagues to rally round him. Meanwhile, a diplomatic conference with the Tholian Ambassador raises more questions than answers.

Exactly, Siroc is no tholian, he’s only speaking for them. Proper tholians will show up later in the series.

The Tholian Ambassador, the one who looks like Herman Munster, has the same name as Spock’s father? Sarek?
Also similar to Cirroc Lofton who played Jake Sisko in DS9.
I thought Nechayev said “Ambassador Sarek”... that threw me off.
Siroc. But yes, the pronunciation was a bit off and almost sounded like Sarek in that scene.

A lot of people have inconsistent addressing when it comes to rank. Everyone knows that Jennifer Cole is a Commodore/Admiral but people keep addressing her as Captain on her Bridge and ship.
Another possibility is that Darwin is a Commander and simply gets addressed as Captain when in command as Commander is what Nachayev addresses him as during the entire run.
Yes, is kind of a tradition to call whoever is in charge of a ship captain, regardless of their actual rank. It doesn't mean they've lost rink, they're being called by their position, the same way they dress doctor Crusher a doctor even though she is a commander. Captain can be both an official rank but also a title that just means the person in charge of a ship.
An officer of any rank is called Captain, whether a Lt. Commander or Commodore, when Captaining a ship. Also, a Lt. Commander is sometimes called Lieutenant by those of higher rank and Commander by those of lesser rank.
