Here is the exact quote from Coach John: “The deepest benefits of Jiu Jitsu come off the mat. It encourages a world-view based upon the idea of rational problem solving. Jiu Jitsu is all about solving problems that are rapidly changing under stress”
With your knowledge and lineage I’m shocked that people aren’t flocking to your school. I guess it’s still early days. Keep pushing and it will work out.
you'd actually be surprised how hesitant students are to leave current schools, and to be honest i am not looking to take food off the table of others. there are thousands of people in the county i live in. But this just goes to show that jiu jitsu students are humans, and humans seek comfort zones. most humans do not want to step outside of the comfort zone, even if they KNOW that it's what will make them better. When Coach Danaher generously made a post on his instagram to promote my gym i only got ONE person to sign up from that post. Let me retype that, ONE PERSON. For that one person i am eternally grateful, but still incredibly surprised that more did not sign up. In addition a little known fact, way back in the day during the prime days of marcelo garcia, he had opened a school during his competitive prime in Florida. This was way before he ever went to NYC. and there was another school in the area that crushed marcelo's school and put it out of business. The other school was not run by a famous competitor or coach, they just had better marketing strategies.
@i8fish Regular people who sign up to their closest BJJ gym have no clue who John Danaher is and could care less about lineage. Price, location, marketing etc are the factors for them
We have that in my country. Theres good gyms with good coaches and less members, but theres this guy with fantastic marketing who runs ads on top of the other businesses and farms white belts over and over again@PlaciSantos
The reality is that the average person can't tell the difference between a mediocre blue belt and a world class black belt. You really don't have to be very good to con a bunch of people into listening to you, and if you're not a very good coach it's probably going to take them a long time to get good enough to realize who is legit and who isn't when they finally do experience it.
Placido thank you for sharing the behind the scenes reality of being a gym owner. You've always been a great guy to me and all us other randoms on IG and it was a pleasure to finally meet you briefly while you were in Austin. If I lived in Mass. I would definitely sign up but I'll give as much support as I can online. Wishing you and your gym the best of luck.
Bro are you doing kids classes, women only classes, weekend family classes?? You need to do things that supplement and bolster your current curriculum and student base…I’ve owned and operated martial arts schools for 30 years now, and you can definitely overcome this…lmk if you need any help and I’d be happy to help
in some way it really is! thanks for the kind words and if you are feeling generous kindly leave me a 5 star review on google maps maps.app.goo.gl/eKYxgyBg4VWKSdya9

I of course wish you all the best and great success! Just hold on and keep striving. Do the best for your students qnd give give give. You stated something about marcelos school failing. Maybe i can give you another point of view. (And i think this could be the case for you as well??) Marcelos name has a high renommee. For normal people its a huge step even to enter a bjj school or email them for contact. The thinking goes:"And than its marcelos school? A top competitor? A world champion? A living legend? No way me, a normal guy, unfit and father of 2 or 3 children is gonna sign up at marcelos. No way." And mabey it is your condition right now. People know you. Your renommee is really really high. And danaher making a post for you only ups that renommee. Normal people will have fear to enter into bjj anyway. They could "fear" your school twice as much. Having fear it is too competition driven. Fear of high standarts.(Maybe they think they have to be fit. Maybe the think they have to attend a certain amount times in the week. Maybe they think it is too leg lock focused. ) And so on. I dont believe anything is true and i really think you are a great teacher. But people could fear those thing. And another Point. If you dont do already. You have to do kids classes. You need to have something for the kids. They will bring in their parents. Uncels, big brothers and so on. And someday they will grow to adults and will pay adult prices. Just my literally two thoughts❤
thanks so much for the kind words! if you are feeling extra genrous kindly leave my business a 5 star review on google maps.app.goo.gl/eKYxgyBg4VWKSdya9
Sorry to here that! Can you do a special to get more people through the door. I know it not always good to devalue the product however getting bodies into the gym will be the best way forward!
Thanks for the suggestion, I am always open to new ideas to get more students in the door! I am planning a special new years offer soon to try to give the business a little boost.
Lastly maybe do a big promotion for January is free and see if you can get some numbers in the door. Also go to the local school and do a self defense seminar for the kids and build a kids program.

Ino this is useless but if I was there I’d train at your gym. Is it a good location or is it like opening a bar in Amish country
