"Cat's in the cradle & the silver spoon, little boy blue & the man on the moon" is from a childhood nursery rhymes my brother 👊

4:49 no I think this is just all nursery rhyme and children things. Cats cradle is a string game played by kids, people tend to keep a baby shoe or spoon or something from when their child was young. Little boy blue and man in the moon are from nursery rhymes are my best guesses

"Cat's Cradle" is a game played with string. "Silver Spoons" are a traditional ornamental spoon sold for babies. "Little Boy Blue" is a nursery rhyme, and the "Man in the Moon" also is frequent in children's tales and nursery rhymes. They are all things associated with young children which are grown before we know it because of the time constraints for affording life - for them as well as oneself.
I have always found this song demonstrative of how many men are merely expendable sperm donors with a paycheck. Women being able to get on and off the pedestal at will merely doubled the chains binding men to its base in service. But the more direct message of the song has always seemed to be "good intentions are not enough" and "children will do what you do, not what you say".
There is an excellent video from the Philosopher of Love, Leo Buscaglia, that is appropriate here. I normally post it in Social Media before every Valentine's Day: th-cam.com/video/mREX7xPJrzw/w-d-xo.html .
Chapin is pronounced Chay'-pin. His most noted song is probably "Taxi". Others include "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Sequel".

This song always makes me break down .. Such a sad tale of missed time & how parents influence their children for a lifetime, whether good or bad .. It is indeed a cautionary tale! As for the hook, I don't know, but I'm thinking it's just a nursery rhyme that is a good flow into the back part of the hook & doesn't have any extra meaning other than the title "cats in the cradle" i.e. children

It reminds us of the way our children are always our children, and are born in our hearts from the big boom of their origin, where everything is possible ... and it is only up to us to curtail, mess up, or crush it. Notice the soaring violin on the end of that repeated passage, and also the downward slight sadness of it. This song is about a lot of things, but missed potential is definitely some of it ... the missed potential of the parent and all he had to share and love and impart, and the missed potential of what that could have been done for the child. As well as the solid slap that comes from father and then grandfather realizing his son is making the same mistakes he did ... not paying enough attention to his progeny, and then reaping the rewards ... being ignored himself, with a smile.
In real life, this kind of discord can be much worse. This song is a kind and beautiful recognition of difficult and sometimes more ugly truths.
It's a life lesson in a few minutes. Not many songs are like that, or even close. We ignore or slight it at our peril ...and that of generations previous and to come.

By the way, cats in the cradle and silver spoon are metaphors (or idioms, I'm not good at it)

  • @royalpython1736
    @royalpython1736 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

cats in the cradle = the family is at home
silver spoon = wealth/ the father has to make money for his family
little boy blue = his sad son missing his father
man on the moon = the father being away from his family

  • @FrothyJazz

I figure the "Little boy blue and the man on the moon", while taken from a nursery rhyme, is used as an analogy for "Sad kid, Dad is far far away.."

Love the diversity in the music reactions that you do. You can tell you're an artist of music!!!
"Music isn't a color, it's a sound that comes within..." *Mesus*

Also, cats in the cradle means (it's a idiom or metaphor) that basically a person has no time for someone else.
A silver spoon means that someone grew up wealthy.
The rest are nursery rhymes, symbolizing childhood and that stuff.

Taxi is probably his biggest hit, although this was a big one for him too. My brother, sister and I went to see him in concert and a few days later, driving home from work, I heard someone call in for this song "in memory of Harry Chapin" - he'd been killed in a car accident on the LIE - I was shocked and realized we'd just seen his last concert. . . terrible loss.

This song is one of the best folk songs of all time. I love watching a film or tv show where a character refers to the song (Modern Family did a great turn on this in an episode).

This song has always made me tear up. I've got a 8 year old son and a 3 year old daughter. I always remind myself to sit down and play with them. Times flies. My dad was absent and my mom was a single mother always working. So i was left alone alot with my little brother. I'm glad I get the privilege now to talk to my mom & learn about her as a person. We are close as ever. I love your reactions 💙💙 God bless

Putting food on the table and a roof over our family’s head is often our primary focus at the expense of other equally important things. In so few words the song asks when can meet? I don’t when but we’ll have a good time then. Then = the future - but that future never comes. It’s a tragic cycle and our children get caught in it too.

This song covers a very common issue many could relate to, between parents and their children that passes completely over the heads of parents as their children mature, always thinking there will be plenty of time.
Then, when its captured within the space of 4 verses of song less than 2 minutes in length, it just hits you like a BRICK!.

I believe Hey diddle diddle is a nursery rhyme that the hook derives from.
To me this song shows the life cycle of alot of Father, son Father, son..... relationships. Much like my father and my son's relationship. A man can sometimes get so wrapped up in providing that he misses out on far more important things. However I believe kids see a dad's love in their hard work. My son just started the busy Father phase.

Great song and great reaction. I'd be interested in seeing your reaction to the art/message of a song as well as the critique/technical breakdown of the song construction. It's cool to see an artist evaluate another artist for sure, but it can also be valuable to simply see the reaction of a listener to an artist.

The p;point of the song is the Father TOTALLY missed out on his songs live albeit trying to put food on the table and now what he did to his son his song is doing to HIMMMMMM! Not on purpose but that's what he learned from his father. How to provide but not to nurture.
