    Loved it. Ive never hunted on the ice of a river but ive hunted ponds when it was in the teens. Any open water and we had birds.
    We always had on waders too, that ice got slippery!

    Nice vid, thanks for posting! We have done very similar thing in Saskatchewan, but without the ice! Blow the 5000 or so birds out of there, get set up, and wait for the small groups to come back. Works every time. I don’t know what choke you’re using, but under these conditions, skeet or cylinder bore is best. These birds suspect nothing and will come straight into your face, so just be patient and kill them with the flaps deployed! I like the fact that you included the part with checking the depth under the ice as you progressed towards the far hole....good going guys, be safe!

    95% of the time in a situation like that kicking birds off is the best thing. They usually come back in smaller groups ready to die! By far your best video in my opinion, very enjoyable to watch!

    An enjoayable hunt. Be safe on the ice. Might want to check out ice fishing boot spikes for safer walking on the ice. Perhaps push the layout boats with one leg over using the ice spikes. A pickaroon to pull the boat might work too.

    ICE is scary - period. Never do it alone. Use regular vests as the popup ones sometimes have a temp rating above 35ish. I wear rubber slip on cleats you can buy at home depot so not to bust my rear. good hunt!

    Hey guys. Long time subscriber here. I’d love some input on the following:
    I’m in NC. Hunt mostly on Eastern Shore MD. Sad to say but the AP is all but dead, boys. One-bird limit and only a 30-day contiguous season. No split. What was once the Mecca of Canada goose hunting is getting really close to going back to a moratorium I’m afraid.
    So I’m 60. Active and fit. Professional vid editor and still very involved in my business, but have tons of freedom finally. Doesn’t matter where I live...
    Am thinking about moving to Midwest or upper Midwest for Oct-Dec this year. Cheap rental, etc.
    My modus operandi is light and fast solo field hunting. Mostly geese. Three dozen sillos and a layout blind. In and out. Leaving nothing but boot prints.
    QUESTION: If you could go anywhere in the US for those three months to hunt geese, where would it be? And why...
    Looking primarily for two characteristics:
    1 - Reasonable chance to have good migratory numbers.
    2 - Reasonable chance to find farmers that are receptive to having a respectable guy coming up unannounced and humbly asking permission...even if they decline.
    Any and all input would be greatly appreciated...

    What do you guys lay on when on the ice?

  • @Diffidentone
    @Diffidentone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I want to comment and stress that river hunting is dangerous as was said and add ice to the mix makes it hundred times more dangerous. With a river it can be knee deep one spot and two steps further on 10 feet deep. Rivers are constantly changing even from day to day.
    Dan was very lucky he did not lose his footing and get swept under the ice, no coming back from that.
    Next time I suggest using a rope to attach to each other and the hunter out there by themselves. Make an ice anchor if need be to attach the rope to but safety, first second and third.

  • @DeeplyDrivenOutdoors
    @DeeplyDrivenOutdoors 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome hunt! I've wanted to try something like this but don't have the goose decoys.
    It was probably a good call to kick those geese off the hole it seems. That was where they wanted to be. It looked like the opposite bank wasn't far from the ice hole. Could you have set up against that bank and hunted all three of you?
    Aiden's fall right before saying "a very enjoyable day" was pretty comical!

    • @FreelanceDuckHunting
      @FreelanceDuckHunting  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The opposite shore was 100 yards away at least. Also the ice on that side of the hole was unstable. That's where Dan fell in.

  • @jacobtrent5754

    We will take a decoy, wrap it in tinfoil and set it up where we can't hunt, works like a charm.

    Still no birds on the lease?

    • @edog2two
      @edog2two 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roostersnake Shackleford why? I'm a public land hunter. I'd like for birds to show up so they get their money's worth.

    • @edog2two
      @edog2two 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd rather watch public land hunts since I'm from the same state, but it sucks seeing them not get what they expected from the lease

    • @edog2two
      @edog2two 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roostersnake Shackleford I get what you're saying but if they were sensitive about it they wouldn't talk about it on a TH-cam channel. They are real people, they don't hide stuff. I'm not bashing them, I live in Kansas, it's been a terrible year. I've shot 7 birds on 4 hunts out of my only private spot that normally produces multiple limits everytime. It's duck hunting nothing's guaranteed. Just because you spend money doesn't mean you'll kill birds

    • @edog2two
      @edog2two 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roostersnake Shackleford because birds are just now starting to show up and water is opening back up do to warmer temps and rain. Birds have been stuck in Nebraska since the migration started and just now making it down.

    • @edog2two
      @edog2two 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pond at my house had zero birds all week due to it being locked up. We got rain and 10 degree warmer temps and the next day there was 250+ ducks sitting in a 40×40 hole that gets bigger every day.

  • @stevebenson3024
    @stevebenson3024 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's something we've done all 50 years we've hunted ducks and geese. Stand up let them get up . That's a little more sporting don't you think. Take up pheasant hunting you can roll up on them in your truck and shoot them right out the window looking at you. Same thrill only easier.

    • @FreelanceDuckHunting
      @FreelanceDuckHunting  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I certainly prefer to shoot them in the air. But I don't see anything unethical about taking a few on the water from time to time. Just because your group has done it that way for 50 years doesn't mean you should impose those values on everyone else. The main objective is to get clean and ethical kills. That's our number one goal. Sorry if seeing Dan shoot one goose on the ice offended you.

  • @stevebenson3024
    @stevebenson3024 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shooting cripples on the water is one thing that needs to be done. I've been to other guys places who let birds land on the water and flock shoot them. When you let a goose land with more coming and take them then take the ones getting off the ground. Maybe it's your shooting maybe some day you'll get it.

    • @FreelanceDuckHunting
      @FreelanceDuckHunting  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't shoot birds on the ice water,ground. What kind of waterfowl hunters are you. Probably shoot hens to. We hunt the Platte river you don't bust anything on the water.
