    Ragusa is a city in the Italian region of Sicily, the administrative center of the homonymous province. Considered the most dynamic city of the Italian South. Due to its peculiar history, socioeconomic environment and urban ensembles in the style of Sicilian Baroque Ragusa is also called "island of the island".
    Together with other seven cities of the valley of Noto, Ragusa is listed among the list of world heritage of UNESCO.
    The city's patron is St. John the Baptist. The town festival is celebrated on August 29.
    Ragusa is divided into two parts:
    in the West, a modern rectangular building of the Upper city (ital. Ragusa Superiore),
    in the East, the Lower city (ital. Ragusa Ibla), built on the site destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 the old town. Across the ravine separating the two parts of the city, is spanned by three bridges.
    The first human settlements on the territory of the city scholars refer to the end of III Millennium BC the First inhabitants of this area are sica, which is about the eighteenth century BC supplanted the king sekulow Ible.     In 1090 the result of a popular uprising, supported by the Normans, the Arabs were expelled. In 1091 Roger appointed his son Goffredo first Duke of Ragusa, and thus the city was governed by Autonomous. When the Hohenstaufen Ragusa was returned to the property of the crown.
    A turning point in the history of Ragusa was the earthquake of 11 January 1693, which killed about half the population of the city. The city was rebuilt, resulting in Ragusa gained outstanding architectural monuments of the Sicilian Baroque.
    In 1848 Ragusa supported the revolutionary actions against the Bourbons, in 1860, sent reinforcements to the corps landed in Marsala Garibaldi.
    During the Second world war Ragusa has suffered numerous bombings by allied aircraft. In January 1945, in Ragusa broke out a popular revolt that engulfed the poorest segments of the population, which was suppressed in blood.
