I am homeless, In Sarasota.. getting burned by the sun in 2023. Hour after hour it gets warmer and warm, i am considering getting some more… panhandling by the sea.
I was born in Sarasota and grew up during that period and loved every minute of it. That song kind of sums up what it was like in our paradise, by the "Lido Shore".
My mother worked at the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce in the late 50's and early 60's and I can remember this song very well. It was a promotional jingle that was all about getting people to come down to Sarasota. (Imagine that - trying to get people to come to FL!) It was a 45 and she had several copies. Great stuff and a good jingle too 'cause I still remember the lyrics and melody.
This song was played at closing time every night at a "hole-in-the-wall" gay bar called Stingers located on the NW corner of 1st and Central. After "last call" and you knew it was time to duck out before all of the overhead lights would be switched on. Stingers was located in downtown - walking distance from the other gay bar called "The Upper Deck". Back in the early 80's when I was newly "out" at the age of 16 with my older brother's New College ID as insurance if I got carded. The building was demolished in the mid-90's, sadly. I still have a couple of packs of match books I saved. The phone number listed on the cover of the match book is: 366-5878. No area code needed to be dialed for local calls in those days.
I thought there was a line , Mile after Mile I love it more and more I just adore that Lido shore. Went to Lido every April for a week or two , drove down from Massachusetts. My grandfather rented a room downtown. We would rent a cottage across from the beach. Too bad there are no pictures of the casino and pool and the towers If I were rich I would have a Winter home there and a Summer home in York Beach ME. my two favorite places . Went to Morrisons (I believe) for dinner.
How very cool! MA boy here too.... Grew up summering in York Beach! Lots of family there going back to the 50s!... Moved to Sarasota 4 years ago. So, life is York when we visit in the Summer, Siesta and Lido in the "endless Summer" the rest of the year 😉
I was born here grew up here remember when they tore up the bricks from Maine street and they were used as land fill out off 17 th st. I think where they eventually opened Happs before it moved from down town my older brother got his first MC from Hap motorcycle down town
From Tampa Bay watching after hurricane Milton wishing all my southern Floridians much love 2024 and beyond
