Welcome to the You Tube home for Sarasota History Alive! Come join us as we explore the past of our favorite Florida city on the gulf coast.
Our Vision for "The Bay"
Supporting historic preservation is something we all need to participate in, especially since so many important homes and buildings are rapidly being demolished to make way for high rises.
That said, The Bay project consultants and stakeholders have requested ideas of how to enhance the 57 acres along the bay front property in our cultural and historic district on the North Trail. This prompted Lee and me to make a video explaining my idea to save our heritage as we move into the future.
Please take time to view the video and explore the imaginative and achievable possibilities…we can do this Sarasota!

Sarasota History - The Landing of the Scots
From Tampa Bay watching after hurricane Milton wishing all my southern Floridians much love 2024 and beyond
Ive lived here all my life and grew up at Lido beach, I was the last kid to swim in the pool before it was closed in 1969 and also the first kid to go back in it, when it reopened. Still have both newspaper articles with my pics, diving off the board.
Nice Song!
I am homeless, In Sarasota.. getting burned by the sun in 2023. Hour after hour it gets warmer and warm, i am considering getting some more… panhandling by the sea.
I’m in search of archived film of sarasota. Do you know were I can start looking?
Just checked this out today
I was here when this video was made crazy
How about the facedown chapline marker? Doesn't list her on the genealogy of the graveyard.
Just saw this on PBS
Bring it back
Ian will tell you that history repeats its self!
Extraordinario 😘
Thank you so much great video. Didn't know hardly any of this. I lived there from age 4 and grew up there. And I love Sarasota. We always went to the Ringling museum on field trips. Don't know how many times I've been there with the school. I'm sure half a dozen
Muy lindo sarasota fl
NOW OWNED BY THE SKATERS
I thought there was a line , Mile after Mile I love it more and more I just adore that Lido shore. Went to Lido every April for a week or two , drove down from Massachusetts. My grandfather rented a room downtown. We would rent a cottage across from the beach. Too bad there are no pictures of the casino and pool and the towers If I were rich I would have a Winter home there and a Summer home in York Beach ME. my two favorite places . Went to Morrisons (I believe) for dinner.
How very cool! MA boy here too.... Grew up summering in York Beach! Lots of family there going back to the 50s!... Moved to Sarasota 4 years ago. So, life is York when we visit in the Summer, Siesta and Lido in the "endless Summer" the rest of the year 😉
I was born here grew up here remember when they tore up the bricks from Maine street and they were used as land fill out off 17 th st. I think where they eventually opened Happs before it moved from down town my older brother got his first MC from Hap motorcycle down town
And Mr Kautz math teacher...drove a yellow karmann ghia....totally cool!!
They had summer sessions where we would hang out in the cafetorium and then go on a school bus to Sun-N-Fun for swimming lessons and arts&crafts. Gave our moms a much-needed break I guess haha! I earned a life-saver certificate at the pool!
I did 1st thru 5th grade here...1963 to 1968. I remember the JFK assassination announced while in Mrs Lottridge's classroom. Third grade I had Tilly Coe. Fourth grade L.L.Parker
What a voice. Its so calming wtf (sorry for the language)
I just heard today that they are shutting down permanently due to COVID restrictions and Amendment 2. Sad to see them go, but not unpredictable.
Graduated 5th grade at Southside in '91 !! Best playground in the city at the time lol
In 1954, my mother was definitely having fun in Sarasota, www.heraldtribune.com/news/20180202/his-mother-only-woman-to-ever-escape-sarasota-county-jail?fbclid=IwAR0sEynamXw1MOuJVkyHYkD-LxEUBj7vk6qMV8WN2PPT0iWFWGxoIa883uI
Just left there not two hours ago.
And did anything happen with this?
Gimme some SMAK Mac.
Maybe locations (street names) would be nice?
I go to school here
I was born and raised here.
You forgot to mention the trailer park it used to be .
I remember very briefly seeing a trailer park there, what year did they tear it down
I lived in Sarasota during the 1950s (from the age of 8 to 13) and practically lived on Lido Beach. I have very fond memories of the beach and casino. I have a few photos with my mom and brother on the beach there. Thanks to all who worked to preserve the memories of the Lido Beach Casino.
This is a great page!
What a great video!
My grandmother was a Smack’s Girl. I have the cutest picture of her in that same outfit and saddle oxfords. Thanks to this video, I now know what the “S” was for, as the rest of the restaurant name isn’t in the photo.
Are there any Smack's in operation still today?
Yes
Bee ridge and shade Sarasota fl
I lived in Topeka as a child and the Smack's I remember was located near White Lakes Mall and they had red drinking straws.

This song was played at closing time every night at a "hole-in-the-wall" gay bar called Stingers located on the NW corner of 1st and Central. After "last call" and you knew it was time to duck out before all of the overhead lights would be switched on. Stingers was located in downtown - walking distance from the other gay bar called "The Upper Deck". Back in the early 80's when I was newly "out" at the age of 16 with my older brother's New College ID as insurance if I got carded. The building was demolished in the mid-90's, sadly. I still have a couple of packs of match books I saved. The phone number listed on the cover of the match book is: 366-5878. No area code needed to be dialed for local calls in those days.

@@starratlarry Fascinating story! Thank you for sharing that, Larry. So interesting!
Why do the Northamercan commentaries seem to come from a homosexual? They all do and it does make for a good comeback. It also dimishes the value of the documentary.
Let me offer you some free advice… Please learn how to write using proper grammar. Please learn how to form a coherent thought using proper sentence structure and punctuations. Please learn how to use spellcheck. It really “diminishes the value” of your ignorant hateful comment when you come off sounding like a total fucking dumb ass!
No newspaper would tell the truth about a real estate money maker - storms don't care about weather reports.
