The black on Noriko's neck that looks like a tattoo is actually from Godzilla's cells. and that somehow supposedly fused with her and helped her to regenerate.
This movie won for visual effects, but I'm really surprised that it didn't get more nominations.
It's definitely my favorite Godzilla movie ever as well as one of my favorite movies ever now. The story and acting are just fantastic.
From what I understand, Toho didn't submit the film for any other categories, possibly so as not to infringe on other Japanese films up for awards.
Been a long time since audiences genuinely were legit terrified for the humans.
I'm not too sure about that
Actually having a compelling human plot arc helps a lot there.
With the Legendary Godzilla/King films I just wanted the kaijus to kill EVERYONE because they were almost always so annoying and completely surplus to enjoying the film.
Shin Godzilla is another such great Godzilla film - still my favourite in fact.
22:18 - From what I heard, the way this Godzilla’s atomic breath works is very much like a nuclear power plant. The spikes are like cooling rods that keep the power in check. As they move out, the power starts to build up. He takes in oxygen, an essential fuel for combustion. The ‘rods’ jam back into place, causing a sudden reaction not unlike what happened in Chernobyl. Godzilla forcibly expels the condensed raw power (which seems to briefly damage himself in the process) and the result is a full on nuclear explosion.
That is so awesome and original
That's a very interesting analogy of this atomic breath variation.
You'd think that'd hurt like a MOFO, though
How many of us got so emotional at the end and missed the "black mark" on Noriko's neck, director confirms it was caused by Godzilla's "cells".
I was in disbelief that she lived and only noticed it at the last second. I went back to the theater to confirm what I saw the next day
I missed it lmao
I noticed that as I watched it, and I can't help thinking how it got there.
@@brownstarslots getting biollante vibes
He has also said he did it because he didn't want the movie to end on a purely positive note, and on previous interviews that he had also talked about Godzilla being like an angered god that doesn't just destroy but leaves a curse on its wake (comparing it to Princess Mononoke's monsters even).
So yeah, it's probably not a good thing for her health even if it's probably what saved her from the immediate blast.
I almost never cry with movies but this movie made me cry in the theather, this movie it's by far one of the bests movies i've seen in years
I was born in 1964 (not that that really has anything to do with anything), and I grew up with all the Godzilla movies and loved them all. the scariest one I ever saw at the theater was Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (a.k.a. Hedora). In the mid 1980's I served in the Navy and visited Japan a few times, and of course, knowing the history between the U.S. and Japan since WWII. and considering the relationship America has had with Japan since then, I was always struck with the Godzilla movies; how Japan used Godzilla as a metaphor for Atomic/Nuclear weapons at the beginning, and how Godzilla eventually became an ally with Man as he fought against other Kaiju (especially Hedora; as a metaphor for pollution) in later movies. and since the first ever Godzilla movie, Americans not only love the movie(s), but also cheer for Japan's victory against any kaiju that attacks them. Only those geniuses at ToHo could think of the idea of using such a destructive force as atomic weapons, and turn it into a "monster" for them to deal with!
And something else: this Godzilla's atomic breath was such an unexpected surprise! not just his breath melting whatever he uses it against, but CAUSING an atomic explosion with it himself! Fantastically done!
And in this particular story, I love how the failed Kamikaze pilot was able to regain his honor in a selfless act, and live to take care of the two girls that he came to love.
It's been a long time since I've seen a movie this universally loved, and it's absolutely deserved. This is a masterpiece, and that oscar was well earned.
The scariest fact about godzilla in this movie is that this ISN'T the biggest version we've seen throughout the years, but it's already so aggressive and violent. Not a lot of versions of godzilla are bloodthirsty like this one.
7:09 Because of Americans night Bombing raids on Tokyo, they were dropping incendiary bombs that caused fires among the towns, those raids killed almost the same amount or more People as the Atomic bombs did.
アメリカ人の多くの人々がアメリカは日本に対して民間人の無差別虐殺をしていないと思っています。
@@人喰い兎-d8r I'm an American. I believe wholeheartedly that America has done some heinous war crimes. Committed during every war. Not to mention drone attacks. I remember there being quite a controversy when the American military actually admitted that they messed up and murdered a family instead of whoever they were trying to aim for.
America isn't the great nation many Americans pretend it is.
This godzilla isn't stronger than most godzillas but he's a more dangerous force for humanity
Facts 💯
I’m happy that you watched the movie until the end of the end credits, because the director put his thoughts into it with the sound of footsteps and roars by Godzilla. To me, as Japanese, I was a little surprised to know that many Americans leave their seats before the end credits finish. Many Japanese stay their seats until the end, because in my opinion, they consider that a movie is included the end credits, or some respect to the creators of a movie. And did you realize the end credits were much shorter than the ones by Hollywood movies? VFX members who won the Oscar were only 35! No wonder the movie had such a short end credits.
The fact that the CGI department didn't even have half the budget most American films have and yet it looks better than most of what they show out will never not impress me.
We really gotta ask where does all that Hollywood Budget really goes to ...
@@Bundalaba
it’s embezzled
@Bundalaba It goes to pay the people who worked on the film. The budget was so low because they pay the staff a fraction of what they make in Hollywood.
Plus Godzilla is only on screen around 12-13 minutes.
@@moondog3056 still doesn’t make sense when you actually analyze how many people work on what considering the crunch hours. Most CGI animation companies aren’t even paid enough to break even half of the time.
A lot of that money is getting embezzled.
All credit to the people who worked on the film they did a lot with a small budget
but its worth noting that the director denied the claims of a $15,000,000 budget and Japan is notorious for underpaid staff esp for animation
In the beginning of the movie, you're seeing Godzilla in his proto form before his exposure to radiation. It's called a Godzillasaur. This concept was explored in the Heisei period (1990's) of Godzilla movies. The fish are from the deep sea that are being driven up by Godzilla as he rises from the depths. The fish are suffering from decompression which is where the doctor gets the idea to do the same thing to Godzilla, I believe. In this movie Godzilla gets roided up and mutated in that clip of the hydrogen bomb going off. The hydrogen bomb footage is from the Baker test on the Bikini Atol during Operation Crossroads in July of 1946. Godzilla Minus One brings him back to his 1954 origins as a anti-nuclear and anti-nuclear war allegory. Godzilla is a walking nuclear reactor and weapon filled with rage at humanity for messing with forces they don't fully understand and can't fully control.
Also, highly recommend Gojira (Godzilla) 1954 - the Japanese cut of the original movie (which starts the Showa period of Godzilla movies: 1954 to 1975). The Showa movies end with the Terror of Mechagodzilla.
Heisei period Godzilla movies 1984 to 1995. It begins with the Return of Godzilla and ends with Godzilla versus Destroyah.
Millennium period Godzilla movies 1999 to 2004. It begins with Godzilla 2000 and ends with Final Wars.
Reiwa period Godzilla movies 2016 to current. It begins with Shin Godzilla.
時系列的に1954ゴジラ→ゴジラvsデストロイア or ゴジラvsメカゴジラ(初代ゴジラの骨を持っている三式機竜)が正史
Heisei Era is my personal favorite
I've seen people complain about the way them using bubbles and floats to defeat Godzilla in this one, but I think its perfect. Variations in pressure is one of the strongest forces around, so what better way to stop a force of nature than with another one?
i honestly thought it was the smartest option they had. the crushing depth does not yield to many things, and sudden decompression is downright lethal to most organisms, even ones from the ocean
Agree. Godzilla was created by humans interfering with nature so it was the best way to try and kill him.
People complaining that doesn’t understand science..
Well said
"Someone's gotta do it"
*sees Godzilla*
"Okay, never mind!"
The Captain had the most realistic reaction, let's be honest 😂
"Someone's gotta do it"
*sees Godzilla*
"And I'm damm hell sure that someone ain't me!"
The Oscar going to Godzilla Minus One was well deserved! The VFX work that went into this film was a real spectacle. Godzilla himself looked very well done, pre and post radiation, absolutely menacing! This film is one of my favorites, not just in 2023, but in general.
I love how Godzilla looked in this movie, and the atomic breath was totally badass.
Also the budget
0:12, should check out the first trailer for this movie it explains why its referred to as such. "Postwar Japan has lost everything, from 'Zero' to 'Minus'..." basically saying that Godzilla is bringing Japan lower than what is seen as the lowest.
Words cannot explain how epic the Ginza atomic breath scene was in theaters. That's an experience I honestly don't think anything can replicate.
100%, especially with the lack of in-your-face music, which an American version would have, ruining the experience. That shotgun-esque way the scales retreated into his body to initiate the blast was downright CHILLING. I actually feel bad for people who didn't get to experience it in the theater, and I don't normally say that about ANY movie.
It sounded like a sound boosted truck and it was god famn amazing
It was maybe the best visual/sound/story combo scene ever.
The silence of Godzilla at the end, seeing the mushroom cloud. I can imagine him remembering the first time he saw that, it turned him into what he had become, and now seeing it again like "I did that" and gave a victory roar, almost like he's risen above what he once was
Definitely deserved the Oscar! Loved this movie! Cant wait for the sequel! Great reaction!
I lost my mind when it won the oscar
So proud and how lucky are u guys. I have been trying to watch this movie since last year. The best Godzilla movie ever and the first and only to win an Academy Award.
That's a real fighter plane, only two prototypes were made. and the first flight was before Hiroshima bombing
Now this Godzilla is what we want..Human Vs Godzilla Lets Gooo
The only reason Noriko survived is because she got infected with Godzilla DNA to heal the other wise fatal damage thats the dark marks in her neck at the end.
Minus One deserved all the awards and high ratings it got, absolutely amazing film with some of the best vfx and sound design out there
also this Godzilla being such a dedicated hater was so refreshing after the Monsterverse
Think this might be the best stand alone Godzilla movie for me! And looking this good on a low budget? Well done on them! This was awesome!
The director stated that the regeneration ability was an aspect of the Godzillasaurus species. When it was hit with the atomic blast, the regeneration got kicked into overdrive so it healed so much that it developed more mass and grew to a large size. The bomb test location was just coincidental, nobody knew it was there at the time. It was interesting to see that Godzilla was actually injured every time it used the atomic breath.
Its called minus 1, because after world war 2, japan was economically, socially at 0, they were at the lowest point the country could possibly be at, and then godzilla attacks, putting them at minus, or negative 1
This is how Godzilla movies should always be, not the generic hollywood transformeryzed with monke
Geenthemen we got the Best film Ever Made in to 2023, Godzilla: Minus One is the Best Godzilla movie ever Made in 2023🦖🐉
This is legit one of the best godzilla movies of all time.
Also, gotta love that godzilla has the same theme music in every universe.
Writer/Director Takashi Yamazaki is quite a historian. Referencing dates and props of historical facts. Depicting the survivors of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing of March 10th 1945", mankind's worst. More casualties in one night and lost in history to the Hiroshima Bomb. The Tokyo "Black Market" scene to introduce Noriko and Akiko to Koichi is brilliant. The Warships and Rear Propeller Plane are Historical fact. The "Takao" was involved in the attack of Pearl Harbor. Koichi's '37 Japanese manufactured Harley Davidson Motorcycle is a favorite discovery. Too many historical references to mention. Akiko's stuffed animal must be a historical toy too, lol. Noticed these things after a second viewing, ignoring the subtitles. Godzilla Minus One was awarded the Oscar in Hollywood California on March 10th 2024. Noriko looks into the camera, saying the last line, "Is Your War Finally Over". Great movie by Takashi Yamazaki, surrounding the Japanese Monster "Gojira".
The motorcycle Koichi rides is not a Harley-Davidson or its licensed Rikuo. The position of the hand shift is also different, and judging from the shape of the center rib fender, it may be a British car, or a pre-war Japanese car modeled after it. The model cannot be identified as details have not been announced. I also felt that they were intentionally making it unclear.
One of the first movies in ages to ever make me feel sadness, despair, happiness and hopes of survival for the characters. I miss when movies could just make me feel things.
What you described makes me think of Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. My experience with Godzilla Minus One is reminiscent of those two films.
ZOMBIE Dawn of the dead
数十回観ました。生きる希望が湧いてきます。
I saw this in the theater and shed tears! What an awesome but emotional storyline! They did a great job! ❤❤❤❤
It's one a kind movie. I felt a bit the same as you until I saw some more in depth review showing some strange scar in her neck, seems she's been 'tainted/ blessed" with some Godzilla cells explaining way better why she survived ;)
I saw this film in the theater. It was a great experience. Great reaction! 👍🏿
Not sure if anyone explained yet but,
The reason it's called Minus One is because things in Japan in the movie are already so bad recovering from the war that Godzilla making an appearance just makes it worse.
So from an already negative (minus) situation to "minus one."
Absolutely savage cuts in the editing.
I saw this twice in theaters and the second time was when they showed the movie in black and white. This movie was so good!!!!
I really loved the atomic breath in this movie, I think it was really awesome how Godzilla's spines rise when he was charging up and how the spines immediately press down when he unleashed the full might of his atomic breath.
For once a Godzilla film that is taken seriously and I love it!!!
I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived. If the impact of hitting the ground after that shockwave from the Atomic Breath didn't kill her, the radiation surely would have. It was a very pleasant surprise that she was still alive, don't get me wrong. It is weird to see what appears to be Godzilla's self-regenerating cells on her neck.
To be honest, human character in this movie is so deep and emotional also dramatic... Very cool... ❤
you guys totally missed the godzilla cells growing on Nikrokos neck in the last scene. the explaination apparently is that she WAS killed, splattered, but her exposure to Godzillas cells made her regenerate. There is a movie called Godzilla bvs Biollante, in which Biollante is a fusion of human and Godzilla cells. This film sort of sets up for that if they do a sequel
amazing video timthereact this is really masterpiece movie and stay safe from the video❤🎉
Oh this is such a good movie!!! Glad you guys enjoyed, honestly best movie of 2023 inmo!!
Tied as my favorite Godzilla film next to Godzilla vs Destoroyah I highly recommend reacting to more Godzilla movies
I love how the Writers on Japanese Godzilla Films named the Plans on how take Godzilla down, came from their Japanese mythology .
Shin Godzilla 2016
- Operation Yashioro
Godzilla Minus One 2023
- Operation Wadatsunami
Those Name was Fire Fire 🔥🔥
Saw this in theaters, glad you guys are watching it.
So if Godzilla fell into pieces, does that mean that each broken piece could regenerate into its own Godzilla, or is it just that one chunk at the end?
It was so worth seeing this movie in theaters! It was such a surreal experience ❤ definitely one of if not the best Godzilla movie I have ever seen in my life! This movie a so deserved the Oscar!!
Godzilla is the scariest he’s ever been and the characters are so incredible! The action is intense and amazing! I love your reaction so much! Thank you for watching this masterpiece!!✨♥️😊
As a Godzilla fan, you can’t ask for more.
This is the only Godzilla movie I’ve actually seen. Definitely a good introduction!
Such an experience I had at the theaters, this is my most favorite Godzilla movie I’ve seen.
This film is truly a masterpiece. I would say this is better than Shin Godzilla even though that film was a masterpiece as well, but this one was something else. Can't wait for Godzilla x Kong to release on digital next week!!
Incredible movie and to think it only cost 10-15 million dollars.
Hollywood is a joke in comparison.
the director has denied the $15,000,000 budget
@@phoebusapollo8365 That is right as he said he wished he had that much money to use for the movie so it was more like 10-12 million which is insane.
There was flame not because of Godzilla but rather because of American bombing 2 nuclear.
Happy to see you two reacting to this emotional masterpiece of a Godzilla movie.
22:34 I personally would have done the same thing, i would just stare at the mushroom cloud, cause even if you run you would die you cant out run that shock wave, the shock wave alone will cause instant death, and i'd rather get instant death than a slow painfull death
Yeah, you gotta be one lucky motherfucker to survive, especially behind a building. Running would have done fuck all anyways lmao
And this... THIS is how you make a Gojira movie! Plain and simple, period!
Fun fact: Takashi Yamazaki the director of this film is a big fan of Godzilla, he also featured Godzilla as cameo in "Always: Sunset on Third Street" on 2005 and he is the director of "Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle" which have same design for Godzilla in this film
One of my favorite movies from last year
Godzilla Minus One is such an incredible movie!! The visuals are absolutely amazing in this film and definitely deserved to win an oscar!!
Not to mention, the atomic breath reveal scene is one of the best moments in film history!! Brilliant reaction Timothee!!
Add in the near universal opinion of, "Jeez, this Godzilla's a f*cking asshole"
Please can you tell me how you watched this cause I can't find it.
I understand the mark on her neck at the hospital is a Godzilla cell. Which might explain why she survived the blast!
I also heard that the tattoo on her neck is a symbol for Mothra. Perhaps Mothra will be featured in the next movie? 🤔 -OG
The story of Life matters was intentional as for too long these movies it was Godzilla knocking down dozens of buildingd killing thousands in his battle with evil Kaijus and most movie goers just get caught up in the action knowing that the buildings are models and or cgi so they really didn't care about what would be a horrendous loss of life.
39:13 you both missed the black scar growing on her. So she's not out of the woods yet.
This was such a great movie. The human characters were actually interesting. My wife doesn't even like Godzilla films, but she loved the human story of this movie.
It was interesting to see how Tim and Clariss make different introductions of this reaction in their channels, both of them presenting the information by themselves :)
Godzilla has always possessed the ability to heal quickly, Minus One just puts a big emphasis on it compared to other Godzilla films.
Can you please react for Godzilla X Kong the new empire soon? It's realy great 🙏🏻
The best in the monsterverse in my opinion but I still want more Godzilla
Won’t be long now, since the digital release is close.😉
Once it’s on digital
Finally another reaction of G-1 .yeahh, thank you.
I don’t think the military was trying to take out Godzilla at the Bikini Atoll test I think Godzilla mutated from that test.
"Why aren't you running?" You really think you can outrun an atomic blast?
If no one has explained it, in the original teaser trailer, it was explained that after WWII, Japan was decimated, and basically starting from "zero". Godzilla's appearance took it to "minus one".
Such a great film. That G-zilly was scary really reminded me of the original. There has to be some intelligent thing to say about how Godzillas atomic breath is too strong even for his body, but I'm too overwhelmed for all that :D
The film is called Minus One because post World War II left Japan in ruins. They had to start all over again from ground Zero.
Then Godzilla shows up and even more wrecks havoc! Turning them from Zero to Minus One! Even further back than Zero! -OG
GOJIRA is our God now accept it and embrace it
the smaller Godzilla is before the Bomb....the larger Godzilla is AFTER the Bomb.....
Also the dead fish are because of Godzilla surfacing, not because of radiation. Godzilla swims deep then surfaces fast and when he surfaces he draws up many of the fish with him and the sudden pressure change causes their internal air bladders to explode and kill them....
Also this movie was made on a budget of $20 Million dollars.......versus Most Hollywood movies that run $400 Million....
You missed the thing on Noriko's neck at the end.....
the fish die because they flee from him, and the decompression kills them, Godzilla does not surface fast otherwise the very thing that wounded him in the final act would happen every time he surfaced
the director has denied the claim that the budget was $15M
@@phoebusapollo8365 Godzilla wasn't even fazed by the rapid ascent....he was getting ready almost immediately to use his breath weapon.
How Godzilla Minus One Pulled Off Its Oscar-Winning VFX for Less Than $15 Million
By James Grebey, a Vulture contributor who writes about genre TV and movies.
There are tons of articles saying the Budget was around $15 Million.....and there are many other groups stating the Budget was around $15 Million....I don't see all these denials that it wasn't....
@@Amiko-do4dj if you’re just going to say that Godzilla wasn’t fazed, then u just didn’t watch the movie man, he was visibly injured and deformed, to the point where the explosion in his head caused all of his nuclear energy to leak out of the wounds he gained from decompression and crumble his body into a pile of meat
@@phoebusapollo8365 The explosion to his head was from the bomb inside the plane that rammed into his mouth. The Nuclear energy exploded out because Godzilla had no way to regulate it.....
They made this movie for 15 million.
Not to speak of the story or the actors - both were awesome - just look at the effects.
And now compare that to 200+ million dollar productions like the Flash.
Do I need to say anymore?
the director has denied the 15M budget
BEST reaction! I watch reactions for THE REACTIONS and you guys are Amazing!
IMO this is one of the best Godzilla movies I’ve seen so far. Glad you reacted to this
I saw both color and black and white version of Godzilla minus one in the theaters last year and this year.
Which one did you prefer?
@@sacodepapas488 I always have mixed feelings about black and white and colorized version.
Where is the Movie available to watch?
I don’t care they dubbed the English language version. I stick the Japanese language version. Because it’s original and greatest sci fi foreign film ever 🦖 🎥
36:58 Love your reaction and I give around a applause while I was in theatre 👏
I didn’t know there was an American dubbed version. Even if there was, the original would still be the best.
Please I need to know how did you get this movie?
It was small, but, you might want to rewatch that ending, and focus on Noriko's neck 🙂
Such a great prequel to the orignal movie from decades ago.
Did you guys watch this on a streaming service? I've been looking for this!
I figured the long cuts was the result of copyrighted. All the best scene though, ouch.
Bro that was a giant skip in the middle of the movie
Sorry for that but Toho blocked the original video a week after it was posted, i had to trim and cut off many elements or it couldn't but up at all.
This Godzilla movie is amazing!
Sweeeeet! Two of my favorite reactors reacting to one of my favorite movies!
Awesome reaction of my favorite Godzilla movie!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Yall should totally react to the rest of the Godzilla franchise.
Heard that they are going plan for Godzilla Plus One.
I also recently watched it whek it came out in digital, and I regret not seeing this in theaters, this was an amazing experience, and one of the best Godzilla movies in general
the reason it’s called minus one, is because after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings that happened to Japan, Japan was at level 1 only for a giant creature that’s the embodiment of the atomic bombs comes and puts Japan to level -1
You're slightly simplifying it. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are only 2 cities. Many others where fire bombed months and months ago. The economy had pretty much collapsed.
The irony is at the time the imperial Japanese attitude was - so what you bomb 2 more cities?
Wdidnt the firebombs kill more than the nukes
The J7W1 Shinden was a real Phantom anti bomber fighter, if the bombing of Hiroshima didn’t happen, this versatile aircraft might have been massed produced, and become an advantage for Japan.
This one and Empire are my two favorites but this movie got me into Godzilla and it's a perfect movie. Both him and legendary goji are two completely different takes on the character and both are faithful and amazing
How were yall able to watch it?
5:16 One of the strict rules that Toho imposes when handing over the rights to Godzilla is that it is prohibited for him to eat humans.
5:19 In the novel it is mentioned that Godzilla had a symbiotic relationship with the locals of Odo Island, they gave him offerings and gifts and in return; Godzilla brought deep-sea fish to the surface to make them easier for locals to catch, or protected them from unwanted invaders.
So the garrison at Odo Island provoked Godzilla into attacking, but when the bombs dropped at Bikini Atoll, which caused Godzilla to mutate, he got pissed off at humans in general? Or does he still retain some form or symbiotic relationship with the people at Odo Island?
@@fighterx9840 they didnt really provoke him, that implies some form of intent, they unknowingly trespassed into the domain of a territorial animal and the animal acted...well territorial
