    I'm from Dublin. A number of years back, myself and my girlfriend were driving through the Welsh countryside for about two hours when we finally had to admit we were lost. We admitted defeat and knocked at a small farmhouse to ask for directions. A small woman with a red apron opened the door. After calling to her husband (presumably the farmer) they invited us into their home, made us the most delicious breakfast we'd had for a long time, followed by a pot of hot tea, chatted to us for about an hour, before sending us on our way with the right directions. They couldn't have been more friendly. For some reason I can't imagine an event like that happenening in England. Myself and my girlfriend have since married and have returned to Wales every year ever since. Beautiful countryside, beautiful people.

    Wales wasn't part of England because it was 'similar', that's actually pretty insulting.... Wales was conquered in 1290 it 'swore alliegence to England' because it was subjugated and oppresed much like Ireland. In the 1500s the principality of Wales was submerged into the Kingdom of England.

      Nada Barton to be fair the whole of the east coast of America was populated by England, Wales and Ireland migrants so it's not surprising that a lot of them would be Welsh but sadly I doubt many know it. Wales tends to be a country that's forgot about :/ Its a culture I really need to look into more. JRR Tolkien was a huge admirer of the Welsh language and used parts of it as the basis for the Elvish language. Also my favourite English war crime against us was when they liquidated their prisons on us before the final invasion. Some interesting history about the English invasion can be learnt from the song Men Of Harlech and how it came to be.

    The Welsh invaded and defeated England at the battle of Bosworth. Henry Tudor (a Welshman with a Welsh army) started the Tudor dynasty and had to then reinvent England (as they were crushed as a nation) to get them to fight the French.. which he did.
    Wales is not a part of England, Wales invaded England, re-invented the English, ran the country for hundreds of years (the English rugby symbol is still the Tudor Rose), and then generations later merged these two nations.
    English people are looking the wrong way down the telescope when they talk about Wales.

    Nonsense. Wales was a separate entity from the end of the Roman period up until 1283 when it was conquered by a Anglo Norman king. We had distinct laws up until 1536 which were significantly more progressive than English laws. No capital punishment, women having legal rights from the 10th C etc etc. Wales where it hasn’t been colonised and anglicised is the most distinctly different part of the Uk compared to England. The principality ended in the 16th century it is no longer one and the use of Prince in Wales was distinct from the meaning in feudal England and derived from the link between Roman Britain and Wales being a series of successor states where Prince simply meant principle leader

    Why is there a English translation for the wlesh capital city? It's our city and we should choose how English say it. Cardiff is the English word, it's actually called Caerdydd

      I agree, Ireland is definitely one of the countries that I've seen a lot of people not know much about, at least where I live, in the US, which makes some sense, there's no reason for people to have to know about a country on a completely different continent, but it would still be nice to see a video about that.

    The only reason not many people speak welsh is due to oppression of the welsh language. The welsh knot was a punishment in school for talking welsh. A knot tied around he neck of a child with welsh knot carved into it.

    You confuse nation with country, the UK consists of three nations, often called "home nations" and a single province (N Ireland), thus Wales, Scotland, and England are nations and Northern Ireland is a province, The nations of England and Wales were first defined in the first act of union at which time "technically" Wales was annexed, from that time on there is no legal distinction between the two, interestingly the Tudors were Welsh and the annexation was not entirely unwelcome for various reasons... Great Britain is a country ;)

  • @bavarianmapper4566
    @bavarianmapper4566 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The "countries" in the island of Great Britain are countries. Northern Ireland is a province. Guernsey, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, etc are overseas territories. Like Guam to the US. Or French Guiana to France.

    Wales was a country far longer than 300 years! Even the Romans saw it as a separate country and it was independent long before that. The ancient Britons spoke a close form of Welsh. Know your history! You were owned by the French.

    10:44 A book? You keep off-handedly mentioning books you've written like very occasionally, and just like don't say any more about it. Where could we find these books? What are they about? Is there a way I could purchase and read these books? I know you're kind of trying to keep them separate from the youtube thing, for whatever reason, but that's just making me want to find out about them even more. Could you please talk about them, or tell us what they're called or something? If you don't, I'll respect that and won't keep asking, but I would really like to know if you are willing to say. :)
