- Sewing a Bustle how to stitch an American, Overbustle, Traditional bustle
This shows step-by-step in high contrast, how to stitch a single hook and loop bustle. This doesn't explain positioning of the bustle, etc. -Just the stitch. You can also use this technique for sewing the hook and loop to the top of the zipper on a gown.
This vid does not go into the various bustling styles. It focuses on how to actually do the stitching for the components of the bustle.
I try to avoid using buttons; I prefer hooks. They are much stronger.
If I have to use a satin button, I only use one with a metal shank. The tufted back buttons are too weak, and not to be trusted for a bustle!

You’re a queen for making this video. I’m a crafter and DIYer for everything and as someone that does a lot of sewing and embroidery I knew I was capable of doing this I just needed someone to show me the proper way!
Bustles are my favorite!! It is our chance to get really creative and design a bustle that really complements the silhouette and shows off the details of the gown. I am not a huge fan of the overbustle that pulls all of the layers onto the center back seam creating a kind of wad. Think outside the box and separate layers and utilize loops and ribbons for an American bustle with the under layers and get creative to show off the outermost layers with hidden hooks and loops and snaps to create a nice flow with the outer detailed layer keeping your hooks below the bootie for mermaids or a beautiful fairy type flow to empire waist sheaths or a-line dresses. I love your loop tutorial. I purchase crochet thread and large clear snaps from the Wawak sewing catalog and use a large eye need and create my loops with a satin or lace stabilizer behind. It is very important to have the train hanging down and pinned straight at the seams so the multiple layers do not skew. .thanks for another great video!!!!

Do you have a video on tips for actually draping and positioning a bustle and the different types of bustle?
Not yet. I will add some detailed vids about very specific bustles, (my next one is actually a bustle video.) But, I hope to just offer a bustle e-course someday. It's too much for just a TH-cam vid.

Quick question, do you sew the loop through just the lace or right through? I’m worried the weight of the train and the strength of the loop could tear the lace.... please advise me, thank you x
Janice Newell it depends. Sometimes, I sew through all of the layers, stacked if that looks good. If not, I put a clear button behind the lace and stitch through that to prevent pull-through.

Hello there,
I am working on a three-layer illusion train that only has lace at the base of the train layers. And, there is a satin layer for the dress. I french bustles the satin layers, but the three outer layers are a question for me since each layer is cut about 3 inches shorter than the other. I was thinking of following your bustle video with the clear jumbo nylon snaps and adding a 5 point hook and loop for the train. The dress front is a High and the back is low (3 layer illusion train) with a lace-up modesty panel. Where do you suggest placing the hook & loops?
You just have to pin it different ways and pick the way that looks best.
When you are wrapping the loop try turning the needle around and going under the strings with the eye end instead of the sharp end. For me it saves a lot of fussing.

How you making nout to fix the hook like that nout make for loop do not make round ( like a shuttle nout making)

I put little white or clear buttons behind those hooks and loops.
