- This time I'll be checking out Walter Röhrls run in the Audi Sport Quattro S1.
Which is indeed in my opinion one of the nicest looking rally cars.

In 2010 when this video was made, Walter Röhrl was 63 years old and he is still one of the best drivers in the world. walter röhrl rally god.
Wow! Being 63 while doing all of that is astounding!
@@splitreacts hes still a test driver at 76y now and still does track records sometimes. super weird to even think about it.
Quotes from Walter Röhrl:
“I won’t wear a helmet for anything over 8 minutes on the Nordschleife!”
“When accelerating, the tears of emotion must flow horizontally towards the ear.”
“Good drivers have fly residue on their side windows.”
“A car is only fast enough when you stand in front of it in the morning and are afraid to unlock it.”
“If the car is loud enough, (the wild animals) stay in the forest.”
“Drifting is the art of keeping an unstable state stable.”
“Take out the roll bar for me! I want to test Porsche, but I don’t want to drive on the roof!”
Seeing a 63 (at that race) year old legend giving the audi the spurs, still makes me smile.
a few facts about this video. The driver Walter Röhrl is 63 years old in the video. 2-time rally world champion (1980, 1982), European champion (1978) and 4-time rally Monte Carlo winner (1980,1982,1983, 1984). pikes peak record 1987 etc. He is rightly considered one of the best drivers in the world, whether on snow, ice, gravel or asphalt or on the circuit.
The car is an Audi quattro with around 540 hp, built in 1985.
It has all-wheel drive and accelerates 0-100 in 3 seconds.
Top speed around 240km/h.
The video comes from a historic rally event in 2010.
The reason you don't see a handbrake is because Walter uses the steering, gas and clutch to sway the car in front of the curve and then puts it sideways. For example, he brakes with his left foot and taps on the clutch and gas at the same time to keep the turbocharger at speed. It is vehicle control that no longer exists today.
you should watch "Climb Dance - 1988 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Ari Vatanen"!
The Gravel road of Pikes Peak is legendary! Good old times!
I second that 😊
I belive that is car no 5 of 20 from factory. Rally -85 by Stig and participant test car of the mid-engine sport quattro. Great history!
Well Group B was the fastest Rally of all time. Later cars had WAY less horses. And Walter Röhrl is arguably the GOAT driver of all classes. If he would have wanted to race F1 he would have been one of the best there too. He proofed that in IMSA.
2:13 The haybales aren't to make it more interesting, but rather to slow the cars down. Some bits of road are so fast, that it is deemed to dangerous to run it, unless they slow the drivers down midway.
This is twenty or twenty five years before 2010-middle eighties I recon.
Fun fact
From 2022 (hybrid wrc car), wrc car is back to stick shift for gear shift, but use sequential transmission. And the gearbox is only 5 speed, not 6 speed like before
Terrifying beast of a car that, excellent stuff. Try driving it in EA WRC for example, really gives the feel of it pretty well.
"Man fühlt es im Hintern, wenn du das im Hintern fühlst dann hast du das lezte mal in deinem Leben was gefühlt.
Weil dann bist du nähmlich schon weg von der Straße.
Also du musst es schon vorher, du musst vorausahnen.
Bevor du es fühlst musst du schon dagegen reagieren. "

"You feel it in your butt, if you feel that in your butt then you have felt something for the last time in your life.
Because then you're already off the street.
So you have to do it beforehand, you have to anticipate.
Before you feel it you have to react against it."
If you do not know who Walter Rohl is, watch Grand Tour episode about Lancia 037, you will remember Walter for the rest of your life. A true legend (man) in a true legend (car) in a true legend(show).
Walter had fast feet 👣
2:32 Some cars have paddle shifters under the steering wheel, some have a sequential shifter. But there are still people, mainly outside of the professional level, who like to drive with an H-pattern shifter.
Handbreak make no sense. It´s a Quattro. AWD.
The handbrake is only connected to the rear wheels in the Quattro and in many other AWD rally cars: its why they still use the handbrake turn today.
