- TikTok, the renowned short-form video social media platform, faced a rollercoaster from getting banned to quickly un-banned in the US over the weekend.
Concerns about data privacy and potential ties to the Chinese government had US officials worried that the app could be a national security risk.
The Supreme Court said the ban was “designed to prevent China - a designated foreign adversary - from leveraging its control over ByteDance to capture the personal data of US TikTok users”.
On Saturday evening, the app stopped working for American users, after the law came into effect.
TikTok then resumed its services to its 170 million users in the US after Trump said he would issue an executive order to give the app another chance.
The app bounced back with a message thanking the incoming president for his efforts in restoring the app and for “providing the necessary clarity and assurance”.
