Like the idea of animals and even civilians in war games. Makes the field come to life as if people and things actually live on it. ;)

All animals are equal. But some are better painted than others.

Well, most skirmishes in history was probably bands of warriors raiding for cattle, so the animals would make great treasure tokens as well.
Also, I need a halfing band repelling the goblins who try to steal their animals. I never knew I needed that before today, but now I really, really do.

Excellent work, you make it look so simple to get stunningly realistic results...thanks for thinking outside the box and letting us come along for the ride....

Those are donkeys not mules. A mule is produced by a horse and a donkey.mating. A mule is the size of a horse and has really big ears. I'm really happy to see you doing this. I've had some farm animals in my stash for years but never figured how to paint them. Thanks my friend.

Bugger. I sorta of knew that, but had it backwards. Damn my lack of animal mating knowledge.

Excellent video. Animals are the main part of a dark age rules set called "Pig Wars" available on Wargames Vault. The byline is "When men were men and pigs were money."

Thanks again for all your hard work doc. I found your mix for magic wash online. I think floor shine makes the perfect wash, now that you turned me onto it. However, i will agree that it tastes horrid. I had to try to curb my brush licking when working with it LOL. Much love from Denver, Doc.

thanks for this! Been looking at these miniatures but just haven't pulled the trigger. Would make fantastic baggage trains for almost any period.
Much better than the foundry pack animals I purchased which are dwarfed by my 28mm historical minis. Their pony is the size of a dog.

There was a scenario in the GW wild west game that involved a cattle raid..It was an awesome scenario.

    this is great
was thinking of doing a 1/72 WW2 diorama of two tanks next to a fence with a couple of cows or sheep on the other side as if they were near a farm
wasn't sure if they made this type of stuff, sure glad they do
do you know if they do farmers of a more 20th-century era, would be nice to add a couple of French farmers

Mind if I ask what primer and varnishes you used? I've used Vallejo's, but I haven't had the best of luck with them, either not durable enough, or they gum up my airbrush, which i assume is because they're acrylic

Actually, I quite like the idea of having stuff like this on the "battlefield"; it adds something of a sense of realism since obviously battles can and did take place in populated areas. The sand didn't look that bad on camera, but I'm guessing in person the coarseness/size of the grains is more obvious. Admittedly, I use sand from a craft store (Hobby Lobby, to be specific) but I buy the stuff they have for making sand art; its very fine grains, almost more powdery like baking soda but its got a bit more body and coarseness to it so you can still some some of the granules.

great vid faust. if i may nitpick or inform you can pick whatever you fansy. those are donkeys (i worked with donkeys for about 5.5 years the difference is mostly in the ears). and if you want realistic animals you are correct on the fact most farms use one breed. these cows you have are meat cows. there hind quarters are round like a sausage so meat. if it looks like a box there milk cows.

they would also be great for Mars Attacks. Saga also has missions around raiding for cattle and villagers. you should be playing old McDonald as the theme song

could you hold one of them up to a 1/35 scale figure kit? I'm sure the cows would not work but the rest could. thanks in advance.

They are donkeys without an ounce of a doubt. Mules are physically different and not very common.
