A MUST HAVE / How to Install an Oil Catch Can - Mishimoto 2 Port Catch Can | 1995 Ford F150

  • Don’t let blow by oil gunk up your engine. Install an oil catch can to capture this blow by and keep it from clogging your throttle body, intake plenum, and ultimately fouling your pistons. You can install an oil catch can on any type of car. They are typically installed in the PCV (positive crank case vent) or CCV (crank case vent) systems. New and old cars can benefit from oil catch cans, especially forced induction engines I.e. turbo and superchargers. So save your engines performance and efficiency and install an oil catch can.

    www.mishimoto.com/universal-c...
    This 1995 Ford F150 needs an oil catch can because the 5.0L/302 blows oil through the CCV hose that connects to the Y collector at the intake. This oil has been fouling up the throttle body ports, the throttle plates, and the IAC valve (Idle Air Control). This oil can also foul the EGR too. Installing an oil catch can between the valve cover and the Y collector eliminates this oil.

    After watching this video and others, I opted to route both valve cover vents (actually added a second $2 PCV inline on the valve cover with no PCV) into a brass T fitting then routed them to the Catch Can Inlet. Catch Can Outlet routed to the original PVC fitting on the Plenum. The interesting thing I found was the catch can was catching fuel, it oil. The catch can install helped me diagnose a stuck open fuel injector… replaced all injectors and while the Plenum was off I removed the original vacuum hoses with new silicone hoses and re-routed them away from the engine. The amount of vacuum the truck is now pulling is crazy!

    I was getting ready to install my catch can and thought I would look online and luckily I found this vid. I was wondering about just going off the PCV line until i saw this. It makes real good sense since I spent many hours cleaning the throttle body and the intake plenum. There was so much gunk in those two parts it only makes sense to put it as you showed. I also will make a T and add in the PCV line to it as well just to help keep things cleaner. Thanks for the help

    Good stuff! My 95 isnt mass air flow, so that whole pcv system is a tad different. It's just one long awkward plastic pipe that goes from the oil inlet on the valve cover to a filter in the bottom of the air box. So if I wanted to do this, I'd have to plan my next moves wisely. I have, however, heard of a few forums revolved around relocating the pcv system.
    I've considered getting a 96 air box and tube and putting it on. The double tubes aggravate me, if I'm honest.

      Not really. The pcv stays doesn't appear to messed with, with this upgrade. I have a 5.8 94 Bronco, non maf(for now). I have the same setup you do. Just take the hose from the airbox to the catch can, then an additional hose to the nipple that is on the valve cover where the old ose from the air box went.... I think that made sense? I’m thinking this is a good setup since it will filter before gunning up the manifold. I don’t see it making the air filter dirty either but that is what would get it. you put it in the wrong hose! that hose is supply for air into the crankcase and then the pcv pulls it through and out the opposite corner so if your puking oil out there (where theres almost no vacuum) either your pcv valve is bad or youve got a pile of blowby and im sure your sucking a lot of oil through the pcv so you should put one there too because that oil getting burned is hard on everything

    • @TheMinuteMasters
      @TheMinuteMasters  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was told the same thing years ago when I install my first catch can. I thought about doing a three port catch can this time around to incorporate the PCV hose but I decided not too. My first catch can stopped the oil from getting to the throttle body. I have a new PVC valve and I still get oil. I might consider putting a second catch can for the PVC.

    • @tblosser8921

      @@TheMinuteMasters a second one would be good if nothing else try it with that old one you have to see how much oil you get but don't run it through the same one the hose in your intake tube is clean air into the crankcase while the other is full manifold vaccum the whole time and the pcv valve regulates the flow

    • @joelr877
      @joelr877 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheMinuteMasters He is correct about the wrong hose. The tube was meant to provide MAF metered air to the engine/crankcase and the pcv hose draws that air and any blow by back into the intake. I had the same issue as you until I figured out the pcv grommet in my valve cover wasn't airtight. Once I replaced it, the oil stopped getting into my intake tube and throttle body. Any leaks in the valve covers, oil pan or rear main seal can cause the same problem.

    Incorrect routing, that's the suction side, it's drawing cleaned air from the intake tube intake the driver's side valve cover. This would need to be mounted one the line coming from the passenger side valve cover. Where the greater vacuum occurs from within the intake, behind the throttle body.

      I think you could put a crank case breather filter on the tube coming off the side of the oil filler cap. I don’t know if that will cause any issues but I know they did it on older model engines. Piping it back in the intake is mostly an emissions thing. But you will need to cap off the opening on the intake tube.

      Not only that but any oil that gets put into your intake manifold and gets sucked into your engines cylinders. If it's a lot of oil and doesn't get completely burned off, it turns into carbon deposits and can bond to your valves or pistons. Enough of that carbon and it may raise your compression ratio and make your engine run leaner which obviously is no bueno.

    Also, would the parts you used also fit a 1990 F-150?

      Good question. I’ve installed two different oil catch cans on this truck. This is by far my preferred setup. It’s close to everything that it connects too. It would have been nice to fabricate a place to mount it on the engine other than using those two self tapping screws.

  • @edwardperdue8212
    @edwardperdue8212 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No offense intended but self tapping screws drill their own hole, and a punch is enough to ensure accuracy most self tapping screws are sharper than most any drillbit, and I have used them as drillbit with built in threads then use a shorter screw and the one's for steel framing have fine threads, edit check out TEK fasteners

    • @TheMinuteMasters
      @TheMinuteMasters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      None taken Edward. I typically don’t pre-drill with self tapping screws but I didn’t want to risk an slippage or just dropping screws on top of the engine.

    You should redo this video and hook up your catch can to the pcv hose instead of the intake hose. I'm certainly interested in this mod because I burn a lot of oil whenever I do extended freeway driving. I have a 351 w/ 300k miles on the original rings, so I certainly have some blow by hehe.

      Their idea was for any excess oil (blow -by) to be routed to the intake and be burned up. Problem is, over time this fouls everything including engine cylinders. Fouled # 8 and #2 on the 5.8L are the primary cause for premature engine failure. Ford has been aware of this for many a year, and had service updates for it back in the 90's. These engines are bullet proof and if properly maintained, should last a lifetime. I've got 30 years and 305k on mine. Original owner.
