You can also delete it in settings too, this happened when I downloaded the new windows 11 update, which then I had 20gb of space left so I needed that 16gb
If you have just upgraded Windows to a newer patch, be sure to check all your software working as it used to immediately. Windows.old folder doesn't stay there forever for you to rollback to the previous version. My work laptop had a newer patch for Win 10 and it broke some audio drivers which I didn't realize until too late. When I tried to rollback, Windows.old folder had been deleted automatically (I think its after 10 days)

You do not need to run it as administrator. You could also do it through storage sense. Like I said, you don’t have to do it as administrator. I do this all the time for clients.

This folder was introduced in Windows Vista. And until Windows 10 it was only a folder which appears when you reinstall Windows without formatting drive C:\ (it just moves contents of the C:\ drive to C:\Windows.old) but since Windows 10 it also used for that you can hear in this video I hope you understand because my English is not very good

For those who did this method, i have one advice: DO NOT TOUCH DISK CLEANUP OR YOU WILL GET STUCK. If you do so, just force restart, do not use end task, it may cause problem

I used Linux to copy the windows installation into the root directory of my drive and tried booting to it. (as I needed to recover the emails for all my microsoft accounts, which was unsuccessful) The system boots fine but the start menu and the clipboard history don't work.
Are you able to roll back to Windows 10 if you upgraded to Windows 11? I've actually had some issues with Windows 11 in the past, causing me to switch back to Windows 10 (by fresh install), but if I can upgrade and see if all that stuff is fixed and roll back if it's not I'm willing to try Windows 11 again.

It has less features than 10 A lot of features that i use daily are hidden Some things just take longer for example changing a setting because the action menu is weird so win+a doesnt help if you want to do something like changing a Bluetooth setting ...

When ever you reformat, the windows old files are left in a folder, because a lot of the files that don't transfer are pictures, music and movies.
I should probably check my computer for this, my storage is getting a bit full too, though I do have a lot of large games installed

When you update your kernel in linux, there are also leftover .old files with an older version in case stuff goes terribly wrong

You can delete it by go to the Settings - Storage and check the storage when you installed the Windows 11 or 10
