Imagine you see a video on Instagram: it’s Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkwoski, Hailey Bieber, and other elite influencers, all having the time of their lives in the Bahamas, with beach, concert and party scenes. Even if you don’t know it, you want to be there.
The video is an ad for the most luxurious and exclusive music festival ever: the Fyre Festival. When Kendall Jenner posts about it, it’s officially an internet phenomenon.
It goes viral, social media goes crazy, and millennials get their bank accounts ready to buy tickets for thousands of dollars, as they don’t want to miss out.
But as they arrive, they discover one of the most infamous scams of recent times. The luxury villas and just everything that was promised, didn’t exist. In exchange, they have to fight for a tent to spend the night, trapped on an island where their dreams turn into nightmares.

Right !? What is an " elite influencer " anyways ? To me an elite influencer would be Winston Churchill or Napolean. Some of these " influencers " literally have little to no talent outside of their social media accounts.

He is a dumb scammer though. (Few months of wealth and fame in exchange for people hating him and 6 years in the big house) Smart scammers like Bernie Madoff/Elizabeth Holmes operate their schemes for years/decades and live life of luxury while it lasts. Some even get away with it, like for example Tai Lopez. (He faked being wealthy in the beginning but now has $90M net worth from selling worthless courses/books)
Assuming that once he gets out of prison with the same debt, they are gonna expect him to pay it back some how so I wouldn’t be surprised if this enables him to pull another scam.

I remember first hearing about this 'festival'; I was on Holiday in Mexico at the time. It wasn't even the 'festival' that I first heard about, it was about the Fyre employees being told they could continue working for Fyre, they just wouldn't be paid. It was hilarious.

To this day, that netflix documentary about this *clusterfyre* is one of my favorite ones.
So much crap in such a single thing.
Why did they think they could organize a festival at such a tricky location in just a few months? Did they have any experience in any of this? I do... it's utterly unrealistic.

This is my first time hearing about this after a year. How does Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Hailee Bieber avoid the public eye on the matter? The media will only show you one version of these celebs (the “good & pretty”). But they were involved with this mass deception, and it’s non-celebs paying the price!

Looking at the title.... i wouldnt say it started off as a scam, its just really really dumb planning, then they realised how dumb it was, and tries to cover up, thats when it turns into a scam

This is a really amazing story, and you've done a great presentation as always. All of Billy's scams had one thing in common: they appeal massively to the victims' egos. It is right that he ended up in jail for his crimes, but while I do feel sorry for those victims who worked and saved up for what they thought would be a great festival, it's a little difficult to feel extremely sorry for all of his victims.
I think mcfarland would still try pulling another scam with a new name when he's out (unless he actually goes for therapy after jailtime since he clearly is a compulsive liar and likely has underlying issues). I just hope no more people get hurt and money stolen after he's out

After watching both documentaries, I felt like they were doing the minimum to have plausible deniability of scamming ticket purchasers of not having an event.

It's aggravating that everyone disses on the cheese sandwich. The local restaurant owner had to pay for that (ingredients, packaging and labor) and was never reimbursed by Billy. The cheese sandwich is real whereas 99.9% of the festival was never going to materialize.

Something that commonly gets left out of analysis is something that illustrates McFarland's mindset. The festival was set up to happen on the same dates as the Exuma Regatta, a major event which meant nearly all the hotels and resources on the island were in use. Rather than reschedule the event, he asked if they could reschedule the regatta.

The Hulu doc is much better than the Netflix doc IMO. You get a better look at the fraud and ethics and less of the sheer entertainment value fluff.
Bernie Madoff's fund was also "exclusive", and just look at what happened with that.
