Palm strikes are taught at police academies -- local, state, & federal throughout the U.S. The palm strike is not only dangerous to the recipient, but it protects the delicate bones in the hand of the person performing the strike. I knew a cop with pins & screws in both of his hands. One night, while making an arrest, he ended up trading punches with a suspect, and he shattered both of his hands on the suspect's hard skull. This cop had been a Golden Gloves boxer, who said he "wished" he had used palm strikes over barehanded fist strikes, the night he shattered his hands on the perp's skull. So, there's a lot to be said for palm strikes.

My goodness...I get it's great that you cover SOME of the fighting techniques and sports of Western Polynesia, but there is a lot that has been totally missed. Maybe it's because once Island groups decided upon converting to Christianity then War Gods and Goddesses of old, and everthything included in thier worship and the culture around them was effectively erased. Only in Eastern Polynesia and it's subsequently discovered then populated Island groups do you see bits and pieces of this war culture. You also see the martial arts in the dances warriors used to do to keep fit, such as the kailao, 'ailao, taufakaniua, and meke, and tge certain weapons used such as the nifo'oti. In Hawai'i the Fenua Enana, Tahiti, Aotearoa, you see our ancient chants, haka/ha'a, hula, our weapons are very well known. We still celebrate Makahiki, when warfare was Kapu and people were allowed to be free and repopulate and procreate. The rest of the year was a free for all when it came to warfare. We had our own martial arts in Hawai'i, although a lot has been lost. Tukailimotu was our war God who humans were also sacrificed to. Maybe thats also the reason for the cessation of in fighting. Christianity forbids murder, cannibalism, and well obviously those two religions conflict. I also think there was no more need for war. Once the Tu'i Tonga solidified most of, if not all the power in the Groups, and surrounding Island groups, then there's actually no need to battle it out. I also must say this, no need to pretend as if Tongan and Samoans are so different from eachother when most of everyone is mixed and have ancestors from eachothers islands most Tongan and Samoans and Fijian I know have some ancestry from the neighboring Island groups, or an entry across Polynesia and the Greater Pacific. We should be proud to be ourselves, and work to collaborate to peace together what was lost.
I wouldn't say that any Polynesian group really "decided to convert to Christianity". What happened was that hordes of white people with guns, arrived on these islands, stole Native lands, and then, some time later, Christian missionaries arrived, and offered the Natives food, shelter, and other necessities, in exchange for them "accepting Christ" into their hearts & minds. It wasn't just Protestants who converted Native Polynesians, but also Mormons. It's very sad that these indigenous people essentially "had to give up their traditional beliefs", or risk dying destitute and homeless, due to the power & influence of foreign invaders, who turned them into beggars in their own ancestral lands.
@@megamouthspike1930 except that wasn't the exact case in a few island groups. Samoa and Tonga are good examples. The King of Tonga converted and then dedicated his whole island group and it's inhabitants to the Christian God and converted to avoid colonization by western powers in an act called tukufonua. But look at the visitors God they don't do as much but they have ships that can sail for years and carry hundreds of people and nails and guns! And in that act the people of Sāmoa changed religions. And fragments if the old religion still are around but it's not as in pre contact times. This is why in western Polynesia people are devoutly christian in those countries. It's was a bit more of a struggle in islands like Hawai'i because of the resistance to change. This is why certain island groups have different relationships with Christianity and western culture than others. It's also why certain island groups retain a lot of their culture or thier modern culture because they adapted. In Hawai'i the ancient culture still survived but a lot has been destroyed. And people wonder why Tongans and Samoans like to fight. It's a pastime when you're unoccupied

True story
No wonder my Tongan friends like sparing each other.
All Polynesians are originally 1 people. Time, distance and politics separated each. Even with this separation you can still see the similarities in language, culture and physical features.
Same ancestors not one people. We speak different languages, I'm offended you even say some shit like that you must be one of those polys that say "we are one people" kasele alu fufulu ho tungaiku 😂
The samoan wrestling was never existed ... But fighting was existed its call Lima tau or tau fua means fight with bare hands or free fight
Another Samoan combat sport was the ‘aigofie.

Hehe... what is a Micronesian like me doing here... but I have to say this is interesting.
Did you know that we gave up our original gods because of a palagis clothes
We gave up our god because God performed a miracle in front of Tui Tonga. #PitaFukofuka #Tongan
disguy what was that miracle?
disguy your name should be disguy ta’e 🤣😂
K O Do you believe in the ancient Tongan gods?
Tell me more I wanna know about our god and why we gave it up?
The sportsman like conduct and the fact that it was a entertainment activity when unoccupied , are important observations .. showed a highly developed South Pacific civilization with rules and laws . Similar to Greeks need for sports arts ... The fact some today see these historical facts as egotistical juvinial violence , is the reason CHRISTIAN Missionaries Ban the art ...
..
If yu really think about it us Polynesians especially tongans and samoans follow christianity and praises its god wen christianity is the reason why samoa and tonga dont remember most of its original traditions, gods, and language. Missionaries came to our islands saw our culture and said no? They ban traditions from samoa then go to tonga and decided “lets take away most of what makes them, them.” The tongan language now is NOT the one we spoke years ago, we had our own language, writings, gods, traditions, and after missionaries saw us they decided to take that away from us. And they wanted to make us more “christian” teaching us they ways then after we did and got more social with more ppl other than our other poly brothers and sisters, we all got picked off our islands being sold or raped and dumped.
before christianity the islanders were eating each other so if anything it saved us all..
@@boxcuber I agree Christianity stopped us from killing each other and eating each other like it's normal lol. Tupou To'a banned all old Tongan ways for the new

It’s easier to think of Tongans as the Vikings of the South Pacific. Our ancestors invaded other islands but always came back to Tonga because Tonga is sacred. Later on, Tongan settlements were made in Fiji. The rest of the island btch about it but it’s the truth. Tonga is the only is the only island where women fought like the men.
Lmfao, Tonga isn’t that only island women fought like men, Samoas Greatest warrior was a Woman (Nafanua) who was Deemed a “goddess of war”. Many men died trying to defeat her. Also Before Tonga went crazy & wanted to raid everyone, Samoa had Taken control, TuiManu’as presence throughout the pacific was Strong.
