Young dreads have knotty dread orgies and you have to fight to keep them apart. When they're older they like to take it slower and court each other before really...tying the knot >
This made me feel so much better. My dreads are only 2 months old and I was so worried about the roots being such a crazy mess! I thought I was doing something wrong haha! But now I know it's normal. I'm not maintaining them. Just letting them go and do their thing, except congoing. That's the only thing I don't want!
I didn't start getting a congo going until I was more than a year in and I encouraged some others by binding them together. It takes some time for them to get going but if don't pull them apart eventually some will start pairing up.
They can sometimes connect along the dread, it's more common with younger dreadlocks that are still soft. It's not a certainty that it will lead to the roots connecting though. Normally when a congo forms it will begin to grow as one from the root. It's only with really young dreadlocks that you'll get them to bind along the length of existing dreads.
Thanks! =] They can start anytime =] They're common in young dreads because those dreads are softer, but it depends what method was used to start them. Any set of dreads left to their own devices will start to congo.
There are various ways to force them to do it, some people sew them together, with thread or pull hairs with a hook through both. There's also where I've seen using a latch hook to pull a whole dread through another dread - I wouldn't do that one. I think if the dreadlocks are mature and tough, you will be able to stick them together like that, but I don't think that they would actually merge together.
I've watched ur vids and have to say.. Great advice and helpful tips... I'm 8 years in myself and I've grown and maintained them myself.. I have a few dreads that have Congo'd up and even some congos that joined together... All I did to Matte them was pull one dread thru the new growth of the one next to it then let them grow together... After about 2-3 months they had began to lock as one...
My hair usually seems to start congoing from the tip, so it looks kind of interesting when 2 or 3 dreadlocks do this. I personally like it better when it starts at the root so if I was my hair to Congo i'm going to do an intentional congo with a band and if it naturally congos I seperate them.
You can crochet two together. Get some loose hair from one and crochet it into the other. You can also bind them at the root with some string or a bead and they'll start to grow as one - at which point you can remove the bead or string.
You won't have an inch of growth in 3 weeks, the roots will just have loosened so it looks like loose hair. I have a video all about sectioning the hair and how that works and the next video which goes live on Sunday is all about dreadlocks that are sticking together when you don't want them to.
I have a dread that's splitting at the root?!? I believe it's on my cowlick so the one root is maturing but not locking into the original. I'm excited to see how this goes
my locks are super new, just 3 weeks. i locked them up as close too my root as was possible, but in 3 weeks, already have almost an inch of growth. my mate sectioned it for me but i think shes sectioned it wrong and in the middle of my head, at the top, im ending up with 8 locks that are going to congo. im not happy about it but cant argue with my locks. if thats what they wanna do then they are clearly not going to listen to me saying no. advice for anyone starting dreads... section properly
I'm not sure how you're going to do it without vertical lines... I recommend you start around your face so you don't get leftover space there, mark out the squares and work your way back... You don't tighten the roots, attempting to tighten the roots yourself will undo any progress they've been making. They tighten themselves when they mature.
I'm almost 5 months into this and I'd REALLY love to start my dreads to congo because my hair is unbelievably thick, yet the way my hair was done, there was no sectioning prior to setting them and they somehow for some reason turned out to be really really thin which I hate. None of them seem to wanna congo at all, but I'm still working on it. I didn't do anything to them for about 2 months and only two small dreads congo'd together. It happened very quickly. I hadn't even noticed it happening. What's weird is that none of my smaller ones want to congo yet all the ones that are fairly thicker than the rest have no problems when it comes to congo lol
Hi thanks for all the info! I have new dreads and I’m starting to have a big Congo in the back that I LOVE. But all my friends tell me it’s gonna cause pain on my scalp in the future...is this true? I don’t want to rip them a part, but everyone is trying to scare me into ripping them..... any advice?!? Please help! Also you’re super cute 😊
I'm going to dread my hair by myself as soon as i figure this problem out. I'm going to dread my hair with the twist and rip method. I just don't know how i should section my hair. Obviously the squares are the best but how am I going to lay them out? No vertical lines is what i've heard. So please, can you help me out a little?
Hi but i saw another method my dreads are 7 months old and they dont want to congo at all so i saw this youtube vid where this woman with dreads took a croshet hook puled it through both dreads and then out in 7 min the dreads where one but do you think the dreads will hold over time and get thicker or will they just split slowliyÉ
jah bless. i have a question can i actually croshet to dreadlocks into 1 dreadlock because i have to thin ones and i would like to have them a bit thicker?
hi Chris, jah bless i have a question my dreads are connected to each other not at the root but in the middle of the dread its not connecting from the root but in the middle of the dread is that normal and will the 2 dread dread up to the root alone_
my dreads are almost 5 years old and have many congos now, but i have a problem because literally all of the locks on the back of my head are congoing into 1 and i cannot separate them because they're too strong. should i cut them or what? i feel like my whole head is going to congo into 1 eventually, i try to separate as much as i can but it's almost impossible.

Your congos look rad, I have a few chunky ones but my congos seemed to have started when mine became more mature.

That quad-congo is pretty thick. I think 4 is my limit. I've got a few 3s and lots of 2s though.
I always thought of it like the river Congo, where many small tributaries join up to make the river. It's a strange name anyhow.

But then again I have very kinky curly hair....

Thankyou! Excellent, welcome aboard!
started my first Congo this channel is dread gold lol
Sweet, i have one in the back i want to congo up, theres two small dreads that formed from loss hair. thaanks!
I don't bother ripping them anymore, but I have to be careful with that thick one to stop it taking over my whole head!

I'd need to have some serious beard length to do that! I can never seem to get any more beard length anyway.
