EDIT: CineWinds DOES have trills and apparently always had them. Not sure why my first version didn't, maybe I had a pre-release NFR or something. I trimmed the video to take out that false claim.
Dennis Sands is a great engineer. He was co-owner of Group IV Recording with Angel Ballister. I was their publicist for a while. A lot of great film and TV scores were recorded and mixed there.

You tell it like it. So many reviewers are afraid to be critical, and I agree with your criticism. Good to know I bought the best out of the box with Berlin. Claire does have wonky legatos. They also have samples that start off a full semitone off. Would love a review of Infinite Woodwinds from you. That could be better than Berlin and the new library to beat. The winds in Audio Imperia's Nucleus are very promising. I look forward to their inevitable dedicated wind library now that they have complete strings and complete brass (except for trumpets for some reason). I'm sure we'll get an Audiobro wind library too at some point too. Liked and subbed.
Thanks for pointing out that the legato speed and intensity in CineWinds can be tweaked to taste; I wouldn't have thought of it myself!
Glad this was helpful! I might not remember this correctly but I think this feature was added in a later update, not in the initial release. So maybe that's why you may have missed it. But I might be wrong here.

When mixing all of these libraries, does the reverb not get muddy from the different convolution from the space?
I am not attempting to "sharp shoot". I am new to audio (beginning July 2020), and am simply attempting to gain a clearer understanding.

Ugh, yes, the Euro to USD conversion is not great... even worse the Pound to USD conversion. It certainly is worth its money. I don't see myself buying another WW library anytime soon unless Cinematic Studio Woodwinds is in some way groundbreaking.

Loving your videos Anne, thanks for making them, I'm a fan (following on Spotify too)! Just curious about your workflow, do you prefer using multi-articulation patches with keyswitches, or using individual patches for legato, staccs etc?
Thank you for watching and for the support! I'll get into this in my template walkthrough but the short answer is that I like to use split patches, meaning every articulation is on a different track. Sometimes I will have all the shorts and all the longs on one track if the library is programmed well enough but I try not to use keyswitches when I can avoid it because it causes too much trouble when making MIDI edits (which happens a lot in film).

Great overview! How dry would you say Berlin Woodwinds can get using the close mics? Also does it work for solo lines or would you recommend the solo expansion/a separate solo library?
Thanks for watching! The version I have can get pretty dry - not ISO booth or VSL dry but dry enough. I've used it a lot for solo lines and think it does a great job but some of my colleagues did mention that the soloist expansion is even more detailed and expressive.
Have you tried the Aaron venture woodwinds? And would you still say orchestral tools woodwinds is your favourite still in 2021?

Berlin Woodwinds is amazing but Cinematic Studio Series really took over my template lately. There's a learning curve but it's definitely worth it for me. (That said, I dial in closer mic'ed sounds for the type of music I do that is closer to Japanese studios sound, they're particularly good for that)
hi would you recommend cinematic studio woodwinds? I'm looking for my first woodwind library and berlin seems like a great choice, but even with a student discount I cant really justify spending that much on a woodwind library at this moment in time

Thanks for watching! The WW sound at the beginning of "Magic" is 2 flutes doubled by an English Horn an octave lower. Hope this helps!

By looking at your template I can't see all the different articulations in Berlin WW. Only legato and staccato. I have the library my self but I don't quite recall the number of articulations available, but there are definitely more than two, right? How do you get to play trills and so on?
They are all there, they’re just hidden for the purpose of the video.
I have Cinewinds Pro and the Alto Flute is my favourite in that library, i think however Cinesamples libraries aren’t the easiest to use and i do agree with you about the detail it is slightly lacking in that department. We all have our own ears to what sounds good or not, i don’t remember if my Cinewinds is the 1.1 or 1.2 version though. I do have an issue with Cinesamples libraries, i find my CPU usage increasing the longer time i’m spending making a song, it can start with 8 and then eventually go up to 80 in usage which is weird, as soon as i close the library the CPU goes down to 8 again, one instrument can’t mess with the CPU like that something must be wrong. Really appreciate you making a video like this so we can compare several libraries to each other to get a hint of what the instruments sound like, the Berlin Woodwinds library is considered to be one of the best woodwind libraries.

I worked with some VSL woodwinds a long time ago but found it excessively dry and not really all that great for commercial productions. It was just very hard to blend with other stuff. After all we don't have time to mess around with sounds forever if we need to write several minutes of music a day to make it to the deadline. Things that sound good out of the box and need less tweaking are always preferred.

Haha, no that's not happening :-) CSW would have to be groundbreaking for me to buy it. And these reviews are - as mentioned - not comprehensive library reviews but rather just what I like to have in my template since many people have asked about this. If developers decide to send me NFRs then I might do some reviews but generally this isn't really a library review channel. Many other composers already do that on a weekly basis.

Really good reviews, i've never seen someone trash on Cinewinds like that, the sound seemed incredible from the demos. I'm still a amateur composer and broke to buy any of this stuff,. but i've been enjoying playing with free libraries from Spitfire and OT; But yeah, people don't talk like that for sample libraries, it's always just praises, i know you're nitpicking, but thank you for doing that, when i do decide to move to paid libraries i'll have a lot of info to back my purchase decisions.
I'm glad you like the videos. I don't believe I'm trashing on CineWinds though. It's a nice library, otherwise it wouldn't be in my template. It just isn't quite as good as Berlin Woodwinds in my opinion. Then again BWW also comes at a very different price point.
Hey Anne! Hollywood Strings is definitely used by many Hollywood composers, and Hollywood Brass very occasionally (the 6 Horns if nothing else), but you’re right-most EW stuff is really not too present in their templates despite the marketing.

Yes, it will be interesting to get her thoughts! I'm quite enjoying CSW at first spin, but they're not going to replace Berlin Woodwinds for me. Since I don't have the BWW expansions, CSW is providing some nice up front "presence" that BWW is sometimes missing, and the easy all-in-one keyswitching is great. Still, BWW is hard to beat (for a quite higher price, of course).
From what I’m hearing so far it doesn’t seem to sound better than Berlin WW with which I’m very happy. So I don’t see myself flushing $300 down the toilet just to do a YT review.

Thanks for this video. I am currently looking into a new woodwinds library. Yep, as I thought, it is Berlin. Time to save up. I have used Hollywood Diamond before, and I am actually quite pleased with the other sections, but the woodwinds has got to go.

Love your channel! Hate to be that guy and maybe it's answered already but.... Now with Cinematic Studio Woodwinds available I'm wondering if you've incorporated it into your template? I like it, and because it was "new" I've used it. But putting some BWW back into my template (after this vid) I must confess I like BWW a tiny bit more.
Another great review-I watched them out of order! ;). I'm surprised you didn't mention Cinematic Studio Winds since you like their Brass and Strings libraries....no biggie, just curious.

I quite like the Spitfire Winds. The roomyness of the hall at AIR is great if you're looking to give your mock up some bloom.
To each their own! If it works for you, that's great! I haven't really touched them myself (aside from their Albion stuff) so I can't say if I'd like them or not.

I just don't own every library on the market and of course I won't just buy thousands of dollars worth of libraries I don't need just to do a TH-cam review. @@AnneKathrinDernComposer sorry, i meant 'price range’. yes, deadline and commercial, that’s the answer. vsl is certainly more oriented for orchestral detailed scores, no ‘mojo' to the sound btw and you need a bunch of samples to get the all picture ! yet, you may try the Synchron-player, it’s quite intuitive compared to the VI player. but still, i’m eying on Cinesamples, warm and musical, vintage gui (!), special prices... new libraries coming up soon maybe? all the best
Anne-Kathrin Dern yes! I’ve been wondering whether you have an my experience working with VSL’s woodwinds library. I’ve been trying to decide between their woodwinds and Berlin.
@@jonathangrow4235 , VSL libraries are the golden standard of sample libraries. Unfortunately, their pricing has limited their accessibility to mostly the most elite film composers (e.g., Danny Elfman, John Williams, David Newmam, etc.)
That said, I own and have experience with both Berlin and VSL woodwinds. Although the Berlin woodwinds are good, I prefer the VSL woodwinds for their unmatched detail and warmth.
Berlin woodwinds is the best , i always say that and now i'am sure .

Berlin Brass works the same way which is great. Separate brass instruments so chorale work sounds fabulous, but yeah Berlin WW are the rolls Royce of wind libraries.
Yes, I think as far as separate instruments for orchestration go, Orchestral Tools has this figured out very well, especially with their winds.
Although Berlin Brass is badly programmed... I love the tone and concept. But if you sample (for example) Horn 1 in mp, mf and f layer and horn 2 in p, mp and f dynamics it's not going to work well...
@@jeffreycomposer are you referring to the Sine version or Kontakt? I had less issues with the Kontakt version personally.
@@soundtreks I also happen to have CineBrass and Cinematic Studio Brass. So Berlin Brass is collecting dust... but I might have look into it again and make some comparisons.
@@jeffreycomposer Berlin brass takes a lot of time to get it to sound real but I did a mock up for a composer friend and In the end, no one knew they were samples. For quick writing, I definitely go with other brass libraries however. It takes a long time to get a good sound and the proper phrasing with BB
I noticed that you in the video, use the "BWW Legacy" version. Have you tried the new "revive" version (V3.0)?. I saw in other review that the "revive" version has a notorious "quieter", "tinier" sound (volume) compared to Legacy. Question: how do you fix or improved that in general?...why the developers do that?...is a mistake in the production process?. One more thing, most of "spitfire audio" stuff suffers the same "condition", i mean the very low output volume, in my humble opinion.
That's a very good question! I indeed still use the legacy version of BWW because I always operate under the motto "Don't fix it if it ain't broke". I'm really happy with the version I have so I don't really want to update anything. I haven't tried the new version but one of my additional writers has made the transition and wasn't very happy due to the things you point out. I think they were trying to make it more consistent with the rest of the Berlin series since the WW came out first. One way you can compensate for the volume is by using a gain plugin. Fullness can be achieved through various tools such as EQ, reverb, parallel compression, multiband compression, tape saturation, maximizers, and probably a ton more plugins I can't think of right now. With Spitfire, I have the same experience though the low output volume might simply be a creative choice. Some developers normalize their samples and others don't. Both ways are entirely legit. With Spitfire I almost feel it makes more sense considering they do have all these "at the edge of silence" libraries full of soft articulations and they generally don't seem to create many libraries with a "loud and epic" sound.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer I understand now clearly. I think that the "at the edge of silence" should be a user choice, in between other choices :))...but not the ONLY one. I'm wondering, if you tweak the "master volume" in kontakt or left in default value (0.0)?. And finally, is there any chance that you show us, how to balance the output levels of the different libraries?. Thanks for your words of wisdom, and patience!
The new Revive version INCLUDES the legacy version, so you get both in 1 package. See their website: "Purchasing Berlin Woodwinds essentially entitles you to two separate collections in one: Berlin Woodwinds Revive, containing newly recorded instruments, and Berlin Woodwinds Legacy, which features the classic Berlin Woodwinds instruments from 2012."
17:30 this is for me the main problem with WD, it always sound like a soloist with big reverb for me. They could work more on this. Maybe sounds too perfect in sync

ich wollte nur mal fragen, welche Probleme du mit PLAY bzw generell EastWest Libraries hast. Ich persönlich hatte noch nie Probleme mit PLAY, weiß aber, dass PLAY vor der Version 5 ziemlich verbuggt gewesen sein soll. Damals hatte ich PLAY aber noch nicht und hatte deshalb auch nie Probleme damit. Ich persönlich bin kein großer Kontakt Fan und nutze Kontakt so wenig wie möglich, PLAY ist für mich persönlich eine gute Alternative. Trotzdem bin ich gespannt, wie der neue Player Opus von EastWest sein wird.
Ich muss allerdings sagen, dass die Hollywood Woodwinds der schwächste und die Hollywood Strings und die Hollywood Choirs der stärkste Part der Hollywood Reihe sind.
Aber so gut ich die Hollywood Choirs auch finde, mag ich die Symphonic Choirs trotzdem noch lieber, sie haben einfach diesen sehr eigenen Sound und die schönen Solisten!
Auch die Sache, die du gesagt hast, dass du noch kein professionelles Studio gesehen hast, welches EastWest benutzt, kann ich mir gut vorstellen, die meisten Publisher nutzen Kontakt als Palttform, aber EastWest nutzt seit einigen Jahren ausschließlich PLAY, was es für Studios unattraktiv macht, da man sich sonst wieder in einen weiteren Player einarbeiten müsste.
Ich bin trotzdem ein großer Fan von EastWest, auch wenn sie in einigen Bereichen nicht auf dem neusten Stand sind. Die Chor Libraries sind meiner Meinung nach immer noch mit die besten, die es gibt und ich habe mich mit sehr, sehr vielen auseinandergesetzt.

I have EW's woodwinds and yeah - while the recordings sound great, the (legato) scripting is pretty terrible (phasing issues). In a dense mix they can blend quite well with the rest of the Hollywood Orchestra. (most of which still holds up, apart from the archaic patch structure & lack of keyswitch patches)

Thanks for watching! Honestly, I wouldn't say any of the Hollywood Series that I've played around with or heard in my additional writers' works still hold up. It's very inferior to most other libraries. No studio I've encountered uses them since the overall sound is very tinny (for lack of a better word) and the programming is just egregious (phasing as you mentioned but also the shorts being timed very badly). I always instantly hear when one of my writers uses it and I end up telling them not to since it's just not a professional sound.
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Fair enough, it definitly has a distinct sound because of the dry room. The sound doesn't work for everything (check out Andrew Barraclough's LOTR or Gold vs Diamond demos though) but what I meant was that it still holds up in comparison to other entry level products like Albion One, BBCSO Core, Cinesymphony Lite & Nucleus - simply because it's more extensively sampled and much cheaper, especially when taken via the CC route for a few months (good way to learn the frustrations of being a composer, lol).
That said, if I could do everything over again I'd just immediately save up for something like CSS, CSB (& Caspian), BWW and either Cineperc, Berlin Perc or Spitfire's Perc library.

I like your honesty towards EW products, really. I would exclude Symphic Choirs, but the rest sounds bland, artificial and badly put together.
What I don't like about the Berlin Woods is the difference in long and short notes presence. You have to tame the staccati to blend them with longer expressions. Also you get alot of hissing, breathing noises and other artifacts, which is unforgiveable considering the price (even audible in your examples).
Do you have an opinion on VSL woodwinds? I bought the whole collection on this black friday sale.

I don't have it so I have nothing to say about it. And when I was an assistant it didn't exist yet so I have no experience with the brand overall either. I've said this before, these videos are not meant as comprehensive library reviews, they are mostly about what I have in my template or have used in the past.
Hello Ann Kathrin, you are doing a great job. However, in my opinion, the VSL Woodwinds is missing in your comparison. I agree with you, Berlin Woodwinds are unbeatable. But before the Woodwinds from Orchestral Tools came out, those from VSL were absolute reference.

Mmmh. Honestly I am quite disappointed with Berlin's legato. I'm missing the actual transitions, the micro-glissandi if you will. Instead every note feels like the beginning of a new phrase. Is that just me, or is the legato of these woodwinds far less fluid and "midi-sounding" than that of the brass libraries you compared? Cine's legatos are notably better to my ears. Berlin's staccatos sound veeeeery pretty. There is actually a very fine, noise-like cloth brushing sound in the Clarinets.
Maybe the natural quality of the legato comes down to adjustment of expression curves being much more crucial with woodwinds than other instruments, creating much more pronounced dynamics over the course of a phrase? Perhaps you can comment on that as a woodwind player as well. :)
Well, not being negative to Anne-Kathrin when saying this, but she worked on a very early version of Cinewinds and they did quite a bit of improvements since then, for instance with Legato, where they added the adaptive legato engine also used on Tina Guo library etc. I expect Berlin and Cinesamples isn't THAT much of a gap anymore compared to the early version she is using.
It’s possible. I never actually updated to the latest version so it might be better now. They just waited too long for my taste to fix the issues (same with CineStrings). It shouldn’t take years - by that time I had already moved on to other things. But for anyone buying the libraries now, it might actually be much better than it was before.
