Vango Ventanas II Air 650XL Review | Are Air Tents Worth The Money?

  • Join us as we test and review our brand-new air tent, the Vango Ventana II Air 60XL. A huge family air tent. We purchased this tent from Attwoolls Outdoors for approx. £1350 and it came with the footprint and carpet bundle.
So how did we find it?
Are air tents any good and would we recommend this tent for any other fellow campers?
Things to note: 1) The foot print for this tent is large, with it coming in at nearly 8 metres by 6 metres, so before anyone does head off to buy one, ensure you know campsites which will allow tents of this size. For our first trip we took it to Globe Vale Holiday Park in Redruth, Cornwall, as we know they have pitches that accommodate tents of this size.
    2) And this tent weighs the same as small elephant at 51kg. We have a Volvo XC60, not the smallest car, but without a trailer this trip would not have happened.
We also need to point out that this is our very first air tent. We purchased it on the basis that air tents are easier to pitch than the standard pole tents. When you see us pitch it, you will see that is not exactly correct.
We previously had a Vango Casa Lux, a great family tent, with plenty of space, but it was poled and normally takes us at least an hour to pitch. We did not want a smaller tent, and after much hunting the Vango Ventanas II Air 650XL, was the one we decided would be the perfect replacement (it is actually bigger than the Vango Casa Lux).
After unloading the beast, from the trailer we proceeded to start pitching, down with the footprint, in with the initial pegs and then the air. We did not have a clue what end of the pump to use, how the valves worked and as a result wasted a good 20 minutes deflating as opposed to inflating.
We think these teething problems were the reason our initial pitch, instead of it being 12 minutes!, as advertised on the bag, actually took us nearly 90 minutes. But…we have to say that when it was up, it is a beast of a tent.
There are 3 entrances, 1 main at front that opens right up, and 2 on the inner sides, all with fly mesh!
It comes with great black out inners on the bedroom areas, which we opened up as one, but can be split into 3 if wanted. The other great thing we found was that the carpet in this Vango Ventanas came with Velcro fasteners - and what a difference they made, simply wrap around the inflated air pillars and it stays in place. This made the whole tent look tidier during our camp. Other points to note about the specifications for this tent are it is made out of Sentinel Exclusive 150D Fabric with Colour Lock (5000mm HH), the beams are very sturdy when inflated and apparently are meant to mimic villa construction? That being said we did notice it is a very high tent, with lots of room. We had purchased some Vango Flexi lights which were easily fitted in this tent due to it having skytrack hanging points.
It has an additional side compartment that for us allowed us to store the kids Portaloo, out of site and mind, which just gives it that extra bit more room in your lounge area. Now if you really wanted there is a font extension you can purchase for this model, which would probably push the length of the tent to in excess of 10 metres, but we can say that for 4 of us and a dog this was sufficient.
We were staying in Cornwall for 7 nights and during this time we encountered all sorts of weather, mostly the unpleasant type, but it did let us test the Vango Ventanas in the rain and wind (lots of both). No leaks and the air beams are so solid it hardly moved, which made a huge difference to poled the Vango casa Lux, which did sway and flap quite a bit in the wind.
It can also be noted that this tent does come in a polycotton version. So, wind noise and temperatures would be a lot easier to bear, but that does come at a price - approx. £1850 instead of £1350. How much that weighs we would dread to think...
After our week away - struggling to pitch, and as you will on the video, struggling to pack away, what did we think of our new air tent?
The room this tent gave us, along with all the other little extras i.e. plenty of doors, fly nets, great bedrooms. All more than compensated for the struggles we encountered.
So, if you are thinking of getting an air tent, we would say YES - Definitely worth it. And if looking for a big family air tent, you will not go wrong with the Vango Ventanas 2 Air 650 XL.

Awesome family tent. We are an older couple with a Vongo 450 air model which is more than big enough for our needs.
The tip on the twist on the strap is a good one. We were in Sliverdale last year (2023) and the wind got up overnight. The strumming straps woke ke and it took me about 15 minutes to work out what to do.

Hi and thank you for the comment. Glad you found the strap tip useful, unfortunately we didn't find it until about our 5th night, but it certainly made a difference..

Always fold from the side, and towards to valves. So when you fold, the air goes out the valves and doesn’t get trapped in the beams! Great videos! Keep it up!

Hi guys! A long welcomed wait to see your final camping decision 😊
It's a huge tent but seemingly perfect for you guys. Congratulations in order!
About those metal pegs with an eye, they are supposed to be used on all four corners on the tent separate from the annex.
We just bought our own new Outwell air tent where both Outwell and Vango seem to have a very similar air ventilation system, which is just fantastic on very hot camping days. Our second trip this year to Denmark was a very hot weekend and once it was up, I was really sweaty while watching my wife being inside the tent, where I told her why don't you go outside? She replied that it was cooler inside and I couldn't believe her. All tents in the past has been choking inside on a hot day, but not anymore 😊 Even a siesta inside the sleeping room was a cool pleasure inside a dark bedroom even though the sun was shining at it's best outside.
Like you guys, a trailer is a must for us as well now with a huge 50 kilo package. So you're definitely not alone, but hey, the space and the freedom you get with these tents compared to any other camping options, it's definitely worth it!
Also thank you guys for the velcro tip with the carpet! Our carpet did not come with a "built in" solution, so I took your tip and it works great for us 😊
Now I am looking forward to see more of your adventures and experiences, you seem to be really enjoying the camper experience as a well joined camper couple! 😊
Take care you guys, as always a pleasure watching your videos, and if you're ever on TikTok, I've started to publish some shorts there about our camping experience with the account NorwayGlamping 😊

Hi and thank you for the comment.
We will make a point of checking out your Tik Tok channel. And yes, a trailer is a must now. Either that or a caravan to carry all the gear in🙄. We never really had the weather on this trip, so we're unable to fully appreciate the vent system on the tent. But hopefully we will on the next trip👍

Enjoyed watching your videos as we have a Vango Casa Air Lux, was amusing to see you had got a trailer as having the exact same thoughts myself, air tents are massive!
I’m mulling over the idea of a used trailer tent at some point, maybe a camp-let with the full awning setup.
Also made a few notes for myself for taking the tent down, might be handy:
    Taking down tips:
    - Tie up guy lines
    - Leave doors open at bottom to allow air to escape but zipped enough to prevent over stretching when putting up again
    - deflate air beams from back to front
    - Aim to fold to a bag shaped width (put bag at end to help with judging the fold width)
    - Roll up towards valve side of beams
    - Put tent bag over top and roll into bag

Hi, yes air tents great, but huge even when folded. Scott is just looking to buy a small trailer now and get roof bars as we have a roof box already. We found the dog took up half the boot, which was the main issue. We saw a few trailer tents this time, and they do look really solid, but we also saw one chap having a nightmare assemble it. May have been his first time? And lol, the thing with all these tents is they never have a how to pack away guide..why??

@TheHadwinsTV the tent you have is a really good one, especially the way the interior door zips all the way down to make a huge living space, the lismore 700dlx air is a bit cheaper, I think 900 or so with footprint which for a large family tent, mesh doors/side doors isn't to bad. Will only be summer camping june/july/August across the north east. I think my girls will love it. But most importantly quality time together. Looking forward to you're next video, 😄

I went on a camping weekend with my family who were using a ginormous inflatable tent for the first time (having declined the offer of a vango poled tent). I put up my poled tent, unpacked everything, brewed up, and still had time to sit back and watch them figuring it out which took well over an hour (feeling a little smug). Hard work, by their own admission.

      @TheHadwinsTV  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Hi, a caravan is still on the cards, but Scott is travelling abroad a lot for work at the moment, resulting in myself working weekends. When we weighed it up, it meant we would not be able to use a caravan that much, so it would be money wasted. But in a year or so, Scott's job will be more settled and this will then mean, more weekends free. So we are thinking near end of '25, we will be in a position to buy and actually one and then get our moneys worth...

What decided you against the Caravan in the end? Not that the tent isn’t gorgeous just seemed a lot of work. 😉
Tip - you can use the pump to help deflate as well, when we take down our air awning we let the air come out then attach the pump and put it in the deflate position. Also, if you leave the air valves open when putting away it helps trapped air escape when rolling around on it. You may have already done these things, if you did sorry for teaching you to suck eggs 😂
    Enjoy your next trip 😊

Hi, it was a very tough decision. As it turned out Scott is now having to do a lot of travelling during the week days, and I am now having to work some weekends. As a result it meant all the weekends we were planning in our caravan, would not happen. So spending a small fortune and not being able to make the most of it, swayed us towards a tent. And ref valves, we did leave open in the end, but did not think about using the pump to such all out.. wish we had, would have saved some rolling around and confusion...

Get the Vango TUrbo Electric Pump and the Vango Power Bank. The pump is designed specifically for the Vango valves. Set it to 7.0 psi and it will pump up the beam and the automatically cut-out at the correct beam pressure. Whiel its pumping, you can get on with other things. The power banks has plenty of charge to pump up the tent and charge phones etc. We have the same tent and once you have put it up and packed it away a few times, it becomes quite easy. Honest!

Hi, we only chose the tent due to Scott working away a lot for the next year or so. This meant I am working more weekends, so we would have spent a lot of money on the caravan, but would not have been able to use it often.
With the tent, we did it before with just a roofbox, that was the casa vango lux (poled and not air, so smaller in bag). So it can be done, it was more the dog taking up room in the car this time. No dog, we could do it with just a roofbox..

Please don’t buy a caravan. This is so much more fun to watch and you’re entertaining everyone at the campsite. Just kidding. Your new tent is huge. You should always make sure you have a large level pitch. We’ve seen many campsites where that might be a problem. We always stayed in a tent with our kids and loved it, but we never had rain for a full week. That’s however exceptional and a holiday you’ll always remember.

I have 2 air tents, a 5 man (Outdoor Revolution Airedale 5.0s) and 8 man (Vango Tahiti 850 XL). So I agree it's like moving a baby elephant around. I must say though I find them to be far superior to pole tents, and once you figure the air beams out they go up and down quicker, I also find them to be a lot sturdier in bad weather, as we camp in the UK you know we need that. LOL Are you in any camping clubs? I am in the Camping and Caravan club, it's great club with 1000's of sites across the UK, and when you are member it is so much cheaper, which is good for me as I am out a couple of times a month from April to October, most if not all of there sites are both kid and dog friendly. please keep the videos coming I luv them. ⛺⛺⛺🏕🏕🏕👍👍👍 ps I posted a short video of my small tent on my TH-cam channel please feel free to check it out, video of big tent coming soon.
