Looking at the geography of Ukraine, only fields and rows of trees, that if the Russians conquer two rows of trees, they also conquered the field in between, but the Deep State ignores it, maybe out of fear of the Ukrainian government, maybe that way they accept defeat more easily. As for the gray area in Torecko, there the Russians control 95% of the city, but for the Deep State there is a big gray area. Probably in some places a Ukrainian tank sometimes flies in for a minute or two, or a platoon of special units and they count it as a gray area. It is not the first time that they paint a single point red like an island in the sea, but in a few days they will spread the red color.
So red is their overconservative interpretation while the gray is their estimation if they go very liberal but just grayed it because they think the Russian grasp is too weak.
there is some difference between moving on the ground and occupying the ground , honestly it's all a bit uncertain if the situation is fluid it's way easier to see in hotly contested areas
Gray zone doesn't have sense especially when the offense side is highly mobile and/or have drone/air superiority and even if there is no one there, your troops cannot be neither because the area is in fact in full control of the enemy, remotely but effectively. It's like in my derby city where we destroy each other graffiti, crue of enemy is coming into the hood of opposite football fans and start destroying graffiti, but that doesn't mean it's a gray zone because in five minutes there will be different situation. I don't really know grey zones in my city, one street can be one's, second another's but the border is quite clear for everyone.
