Fitting a ZR2 Tire Carrier on WJ

  • The process of how I fitted a tire carrier from a ZR2 S10 Blazer (or just a 2 door Blazer) onto my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. It is plenty strong for the 33x12.50 on 15x10 steel wheels and I plan to be adding more gear to it as well in the future.

Agree fully re' the ugliness of the aftermarket bars for the WJ. I'm in Australia and unfortunately we don't have access to those ZR2 Blazer rear carriers or I'd grab one. But this arrangement is what I will most likely go with. Looks great and well done. Only change I would make is to either move the latch so you don't have to trim the rear plastic section, or just don't install the rear plastic section.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Yeah the plastic panel was iffy for me too, I considered not installing it, plugging the hole, and just mounting the button for the window directly into the hatch, but the plastic pieces are cheap and plentiful so I trimmed it first and will give it time

How many inches tall is it and what number of wheels and tires does it have?

Sweet, looking for these in the UK and it appears they're rarer than hens teeth!
How far do you think it would need to be offset so the glass could still open with the carrier shut?

For the glass to still open it would have to be a pretty small tire, pretty spaced out, and the carrier would have to latch different. I personally wouldn't bother even trying

I'm going to see if a 4runner one works as we have more of those in scrapyards over here in the UK

Great job, you should build your own rear bumper.

The only aftermarket rear bumpers I like on the WJs are the ones with a tank tuck, and this WJ will never get a tank tuck. I'm happy to keep the stock cover since I have a great rear skid and the hitch

And that stick out part you said you have to cut don’t cut that you wanted to stick out. It’s called offset do you want the big chunky tires? You’re gonna need that if you cut that off and make it skinnier guess what tire is not gonna fit on that carrier like wow I’m halfway drunk. I can understand that.

I’m not a nuclear rocket scientist but if you had five holes, you might have to drill that out but guess what you don’t need five holes at a spare tire on it’s got three so guess what? It’ll probably fit on three.
