  • The two most important parts on any vehicle are the steering and brakes. Ever since we moved up to 40-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers on our 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon build, we’ve battled a few issues with our steering both on-road and off. After looking at all of our available solutions and upgrades, we’ve found what we think is the absolute best fix for the JT’s steering. On this Inside Line, our Senior Off-Road Editor Ali Mansour will breakdown the why, what, and how of the PSC Motorsports hydraulic-assist steering system designed specifically for the Jeep Gladiator.

    ALI !! THANKS Simply put you have the best description on the PSC Hydraulic assist 👏 im not a dummy but since i never looked into this style kit i only had a small idea what it actually was , so after listing to you i now understand it much better & its something I'm looking into for the future.

    Good tutorial, I have a 2023 with the cast iron steering box. Has no dead spot, but one day, 40's might be in my future. It's really great, coming from a Toyota Tacoma, how much support there is for Jeeps. There is no need on a Jeep for custom fab. Someone has a kit to do anything you can imagine.

    Great information
    Will need to add that to the list of things will need when I get the larger tires (going to be very expensive, tires wheels gears steering)

    I used a steering booster kit from Apex on my diesel with 39s (my jeep came with a cast iron box) and I have to say its great in rocks and on road

    I just had my aluminum steering box upgraded to a cast box, and they dealership flashed the computer which increased the pressure output, and thankfully all under warranty. Seems to be handling 37's ok now. Thanks for the info on the PSC system. Great video as always.

    • @davemurray8421

      @@gregbeasley2657 just a factory steel steering box. Was covered under warranty. Apparently in 2021 they switched back to a steel body rather than the aluminum on the JLs and JTs, so they just swap that in.

    Another great vid Ali! I forget what gearing you've got set up, but with 40's (and their weight), and the belt driven steering pump now - did you notice any sort of driving power degradation? Wondering if the 3.6L is telling you anything about being taxed a bit much. I'm thinking if not, it says a lot about what the engine is capable of doing.

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I expected to see a little bit of a power loss and fuel economy hit. However, that really hasn’t been the case. At least, not to a point where I can genuinely tell the difference. I’m still averaging in the mid 13’s for fuel economy and it will still hold overdrive gears on the highway. I’m running 5.38 gears. The tires weigh m around 111 pounds each. I don’t remember the wheel weight. I think it’s somewhere around 30 pounds each.

    • @albertb1702
      @albertb1702 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrivingLine Dang that's pretty good, especially with that unsprung weight - those 5.38's make a big impact indeed. Though you probably have go to through some "human-recalibration" whenever you jump from the JT to the 392! Ha!

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the 392 is on a different level power wise for sure! Wish that was a factory option for the Gladiator.

  • @FenderStrat360
    @FenderStrat360 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Do you think the PSC is a good upgrade for a gladiator running 37s on a 4in lift with stock axles? The steering on road is so sloppy.

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never felt as though I needed assist when I was on 37s. If you still have the stock aluminum gear box, I would see if you can get the cast iron one swapped on under warranty. That should tighten up the steering a good bit. Most of the slop seems to come from the gear box.

    What happened to the gator. That was my favorite color and would have opted for that color on mine. I settled for a 21 Rubi with granite but had all the options i wanted.

    I've heard folks prime the steering pump on a bench too. Did you have to do that?

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That probably would’ve been a good idea. I honestly didn’t even think about that at the time. The way the fitting is on the pump, I’m pretty sure I would’ve made a huge mess on my garage floor from the time I filled it up to putting it on the vehicle. 😂

    No issues raising the engine from the small oil pan like you did?

    • @DrivingLine

    I have installed this system and this is making noise on full lock and engine acting as under load and will even shut off sometimes. have i missed something or is this how it is supposed to be?

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure your steering stops are set correctly. If not, you are going to hear the ram whine at full lock. If it's making any noise driving, you still have air in the system.

    • @TheTruckersTribune
      @TheTruckersTribune ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrivingLine it doesn’t make any noise while driving but the steering stops were pre-installed by factory never messed with them do I still need to do something about them? and also if the rpm is higher the whining stops at full lock.

    • @DrivingLine
      @DrivingLine  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheTruckersTribune You should definitely check the steering stops. The PSC kit changes the gear box as well. So, the sweep isn't identical to factory. Not sure about the RPM noise difference. It still could be an issue with the ram wanting to go past what the steering gear box can sweep.

      Don't blame you...paying 50k for a jeep just to throw more money to make it drivable. Another 50k if you want to make it what you want offroader. Same with Bronco, what a misunderstanding. They are all setup for malls out of the box.

    • @mountainlife1165
      @mountainlife1165 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PRosin-yd9ml, you may be right on the mall setup. I will say that I ran it pretty hard off road and it performed great, better than expected. It’s just the daily driving with that unpredictable steering and the wander that was worse than my old ‘83 CJ7. Now I’m back in a basically bullet proof 2021 Tundra Crewmax and yes, I take it off road and it does great for my needs.
