This is a good video. I put 2 transducers on my boat. One for high speed, the other (side and down imaging) for trolling. The high speed (2D only) is on the starboard side, the wide side and down on the port side of the motor. I troll with an electric up on the bow so there is no turbulence from that back at the transom. It works well and I can read the screen at over 40 mph. It really saves a LOT of time when determining where to fish. Once I find them I switch to down imaging and troll with the electric. I had 2 boats before this one that "lost the picture" at about 4 to 5 mph and it drove me nuts. I wanted to make sure I did not have that problem again. Both transduces are connected to the Humminbird through a Wye cable (sold by Humminbird).

Ahhhhh.... It all makes sense now. I have a Regal 2500 which the previous owner installed a Garmin 742. Won't read for squat underway. I have their "Fast Trac" hull which brings air in from the side to break up resistance. The Garmin will never read correctly while underway! Thank you for the video. I now can give up. Lmao.

Awesome information there. I’ve had a particular brand of a boat that supposedly has a reputation of a dirty hull so to speak and never been able to get a good reading at speed, your comment on the trailing edge welds ( first transducer mounting video that I have heard mentioned this btw) so l ground the dags off and hey presto sounder now reads perfectly at speed. One happy camper. Thank you.

Another channel said to put the boat on the water. Measure the boat level at troll, then back at home, set the boat up to the same level. Then install the Transducer making it level. Lot of work. I like your method. Seems more practical.

    • @hankvana2149
      @hankvana2149 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The boat may not float or plane level so setting the transducer relative to the bottom of the hull doesn't make sense to me. I checked my boat at slow troll and my "search speed" (about 10 mph) and set my transducer level for that as those are more important (to me) than reading "at speed". A bit more effort but I think it is worth it. Each to their own :-)

Hi Ben. This was very helpful. I followed all your guidelines but still have problems reading over 10knots. I do have a different setup though and would appreciate your thoughts.
First I have twin engines so there is a potential the starboard engine turning anto clockwise is creating turbulence and pushing water up to the transducer mounted on the starboard side. Is there a potential if this and consideration transducer should not be installed on starboard side with twin engines - I have read that a better spot is between the engines
Second, I have a triple stepped hull. Supposedly the step being there to get air under the boat for quick planing causes bubbles and a transom mount just won’t work on a stepped hull. Do you have any thoughts on this potential and ideas you could share.
In short, with twin engines and stepped hull, can a transom mount work and if so where should it be positioned.
    Thanks
    Norman

Ur correct in saying that it doesn't make a difference mounting the xducer on the port side.
My lowerance was mounted there because the old xducer was there. Had some interference and lowrance said fitting it on the starboard side will fix it.
I told them i dont think it will as its more like electrical with small equal lines down the one right of side scan and everything else works.
Basically they said they cant help me if i wont do as they said. So i drilled more holes into my starboard transom, mounted it and nothing changed.
Told lowrance of the result and blames me for installation error and to take to a shipwright to fix.
    Their techs are usless.
Sonars are not that complicated to install.

The sonar and clear view I figured would be very helpful but im starting to get the feeling that I should of got the side view also. Any suggestions?? I cant take it back or exchange so I hope this one works great for me. Just marking my fishing spots is big for me and also I like to be able to read the bottom. So I hope I bought the right one.

mr. weston my name is jim Costi, I Have a Garmin stryker vivid 9" unit mounted at the helm. Originally the 'ducer from another unit was mounted low port side at the back of the hull it was fair read out after I xchanged to a better unit with the stryker. I was told to move the new 'ducer to the starboard and on the transom where it is currently but above 5-8 mph the monitor goes blank ( xtreme cavitation I would think ). Should I try moving it back and simply adjust the height off the hull instead of the transom ( which is set a lot higher on this tracker aluminum hull bass boat.

Hi Ben, great video. Admittedly, I’ve got Lowrance gear but learnt a lot from your insights. A general question, when you have transducer in place and bolted to the correct angle, should it be nice & tight or if there is a touch of movement up or down, would that have a bearing on reading at speed?? I've just bought a new Garmin finder to replace an older one and want to get the transducer right...had it wrong till now...too deep by far...duh.
My query relates to turbulence from rivets in the hull. There are four around 800mm forward from the transducer, two either side by perhaps 25>30mm of the line the transducer is on. Are these likely to affect the readings? I can't really do anything about them so maybe it's just too bad so sad...Thanks.

Hi, I'm mounted on the Starboard side, if I set the inside edge, close to outboard, at 5 mm the outside edge will be completely under water say at 15-20mm because of the steeper V hull of the boat.. Is this a problem? The transducer will have more drag from the water and I don't want to pull it off the boat?? Thanks Much!

When the boat is moving the nose is up pushing the transducer pushed down means the transducer is not level when on the move it will be to far down and cause issues there is other videos on TH-cam where they take the boat out on the water with a spirit level and then angle the transducer to get the best reading.
The transducer needs to go up slightly at the rear to get the best reading on the move

Great video Ben, thanks. I’m looking to upgrade my Echomap Ultra 100 power supply from a 20Ah AGM to a Lithium as can’t quite get a full days fishing out of the now 4 year old AGM and wondering if a FVP lithium 17.5 AH capable of 100% useable AH would give me a full days (8hours) fishing. What’s your thoughts please.

Old reply but its math.. if the unit pulls 3 amps. A 17 amp hr battery will be 17 divided by 3 which h is just under 6 hrs run time... ifn you want 8 hrs a min of 24 amp hr lithium will work

nice video but you're use of words leaves a lot to be desired, after 8:35 you talk about the 'nose' of the transducer, that should denote the front of the transducer, like pointing the nose of your boat, the front, into the wind, thus maybe you should say the back end of the transducer, the rear , etc as you are pointing to the rear, not the front or nose of the transducer thus making this statement ambiguous, what should we go with? what you say or what you point to? i'll go with what you point to
