I grew up living in Dyess base housing as a kid. We moved there as my dad got assigned to fly the B1. Our backyard faced the runway and I remember watching my dad take off in the b-1 and fly the pattern. He would dip the wings back and forth when he would fly over the house as he knew I would be watching outside. I think there’s a picture of me sitting in a lawn chair at 7 years old watching him as I ate goldfish crackers, 😂. Hearing the sound again stirs up a lot of childhood memories. Those engines just sound like they’re ripping sheets when they go full afterburner. My mom would get annoyed when a dish would fall out of a cabinet and break because these would literally shake the entire house.

Worked B1 flightline avionics three years up till 91. Can still remember the patterns / settings required to test / troubleshoot systems (DAS). Worked long hours and shift work, would often be tired and running on lots of coffee and cigarettes, but had to focus; so you could pretty much do many somewhat complex system checkout processes almost automatically. Good job, built some good mental toughness due to lots of complex responsibility while usually running on very little sleep.

It's not a problem Nick. Visibility is excellent out the front and 99% of the time not low level we were looking out the front/sides clearing for traffic just like every other aircraft. The seats are lowered full down and full aft when a crewmember leaves the seat. This is done just because it's easier to get out of and into. The video looks like the front seats are in the full down & aft position. Before taxi, the crew members will adjust their seats to suit their individual requirements.

Surprised to see vertical scale instruments after all this time--believe they were first used on F-105 and F-106 aircraft around 1960. Twenty years ago I got a close look at a B-1B in flight as I drove a 172 from PUB to FTG returning from my first solo cross country. Monitoring COS approach frequency, I heard Jayhawk 1 request permission for low pass over AF Academy, which was denied, and then a low pass over runway. After he flew south over the runway, approach informed me that I had traffic, a B-1B Heavy, approaching me from six o'clock and intending to climb through my altitude after passing. All I could do was acknowledge, and watch as this magnificent aircraft came up in front of me and then rolled off to the east. Quite a sight.

Very interesting to see the B-1’s interior. 👍 In person, I have seen the B-1’s interior at an air show at Travis Air Force Base, CA.
I have also seen the interior of a Vulcan bomber at the Castle Air Museum, CA. and the B-52D’s interior at the Travis Air Force Base Museum, CA.

That external hardrive at 2:10. When I bought mine years and years ago it had a label on the box that it was tested to the shock resistance standards of US armed forces. Back then I thought that it was just a silly marketing gimmick, turns out that at least some one is using it in the Air Force :D

When I was a kid, I grew up near Grissom AFB in Peru Indiana. This is back when Grissom was a huge, no-shit strategic base with B-1s, B-52s and all kinds of other planes of the day. No more. It is a museum and there's some cargo outfit operating out of it. But on weekends I would sit outside the fence on the approach of the runway and watch all of them all day. My mother would complain that I smelled like jet fuel and make me take a bath. Ahh...those were the days...

Legend says when the time has come, B-1 crews will fly their planes to the bone yard for the final time and will be riding home on a B-52.
