- We attempt to drive 2 of my rat trucks 700 km into the desert to join up with some crazy petrol heads for madness on a dry lake bed, or pan, as we call it here. Both Flytrap, the 51 Chevy rat truck and Crackpot, the 78 Ford F100, departs early on a cold and rainy morning for Pandemonium 2024. Will we get there?
You don't want to miss it!😎

You guys traversed some rugged terrain, not to mention the cold. Appreciate you taking everyone along. The adventure continues
Can't beat a road trip and making new memories with friends.
Thanks for taking us with you, leka man 👍👍 thanks Div
Thanks for taking us along! You guys are having too much fun! Cheers from the shed
Is there such a thing as too much fun? 😀 Carpe diem!
Great road trip. Love being able to see the country side.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Div, the fact that you guys made it this far is a testament to the good builds you make.
No windscreen wipers?
No door windows?
No heater?
Fuel filler?
I'm thinking "Spartacus"
What a beast.
Cheers mate. 👍 🦘🦘
I do have windscreen wipers, you gotta give me that one!😅
Thanks for the sight seeing cruise. Nothing like the view from a classic vehicle. Fascinating scenery. Can't wait for the next episode! Dan from Oregon
Flytrap is using oil most sparingly. The long engine runtime is good for those valve seals.
Thanks for another , Brother !
Will we make it?? Never in doubt. Great trip, thanks for sharing Div.
De Rust sounds like the ideal place for a Rat Rod shop. Have a Lekka time, see you in the next one.
De rust means the rest.
Thanks for bringing us on the beautiful roads of South Africa. I love it.
thanks for taking us viewers on the journey Div, interesting to see South African north country side, like most of Australia nothing there, just low bush and desert....lol
Glad you enjoyed it. If one continues further north, the landscape changes completely.
Hi hope you's have a great time .And thank you for taking us with you it was great have a Lakka one boy's
No windows, a metal steering wheel with no windows, and cold rain. What's not to love on a road trip? 🤣 What you forgot was a pair of gloves, I'm sure you have some welding gloves somewhere? What a great guy's trip, good times!
Yeah, several pairs of gloves, all lying in a drawer back at the shop...😅
Thanks for taking us along Dif as a great way to start the day, i had to rode shotgun in a friends lowered Bug & he was always causing traffic jams if we encountered a speed bump in the UK.
10.00 While you were fiddling with the plug, Dirk was piddling with his flug . 😂
😂👍
Hey Dif! Massive! Massive! vid. What a hoot. Loved the reaction from the locals along the way. What scenery, can't wait for next instalment. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful country thanks for sharing!
Great video love the scenery.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another awesome road trip, love the mountains. Glade to see the roadmap, gives us a feel for the trip.
Nice scenery. Road looks in good shape. Hope you are feeling good from your tummy operation. And have fun.
Looks like a good trip and the sun finally came out. Have a great time at Pandemonium.
Glad you and your mates had a great adventure
Some great views and road trip 👍👍
Great stuff Div. I can’t wait to see what happens at the Pan! 👍🏻
Div looks like a great road trip so far Enjoy guys
Enjoyed the video of your beautiful country and your trip so far…
Me and 7 people drove from Harare to Capetown in a 1957 landrover long wheel base pick with canvas top like yours, at chrismas 1991, The kruger was dam cold at night, but great trip, then we drove back. Also drove the Garden route, Durban to Capetown. Great veiws in southafrica, lekka Boet lekka,
Epic trips!
@ratrodsafrica Thanks Boet, once Africa gets in your blood it never leaves, I traveled none stop since those days all over the world, but Africa is always there. Good luck Boet. 👍👍
Definitely an interesting adventure!Thank you for sharing
Wow what a landscape thanks for sharing the amazing views.
You need a trailer plug that comes from the back of your rig to the A frame, 😂 then you just plug it in and use the rigs tail lights, is it legal to run a Road train over there 😂😅 looked like a great weekend, bit of rain dosent matter, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
I did have the light board with trailer plug already and didnt want to go to the trouble of all the extra wiring🙂
@@ratrodsafrica I just figured it might be easier than carrying the light board, then it would be there whenever you need 😅 thanks for sharing, all the best
Loved every minute of the journey. Can't wait for the next episode. Thanks Diff and team!
Enjoy yourself gentlemen ,have a good time.
FLIPPEN AMAZING!!!
9:50 > Diff filmed his friend pissing on the fence, 😂
Haha, yes!😂
Hi Diff, enjoying watching you guys travelling through big sky country, great scenery. Looking forward to the next episode.
Awesome adventure brother and awesome friends that's some awesome scenery yall !! Safe travels up and safe travels back 🙏🏾 brothers !!! So awesome yall have a lekka one and say hi to everyone for me brother
I do love a road trip. Best one I experienced was coast to coast USA on my HD. It was late September and New England was very cold. The terrain you're traveling reminds me of Westt TtX or the desert of New Mexico. Good friends make good company on those rides. Looking forward to the next episode Diff.
That's a long trip indeed!
We rap a rubber bungee snuggle from the steering wheel to the bottom of the seat frame 👍👍
That's a good plan!
Enjoy the trip. Looking forward to the next video. The Karoo is just beautiful.
Wow enjoy😂
Thanks!
Awsome video Div ! 😅
Thanks! 😁
The South African top gear boys on a road trip. Diff Clarkson Wayne Hammond and Dirk May
😂
Can't wait to see the next video
I’m glad you took us with you,I love the barefoot mechanics laugh, u are a very good friend, have a great day and a lucka one, your friend from USA, Brian…
So cool to see you on the road. Love the scenery along the way! Diverse!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for a really good look at the varied topography and taking us along on the journey. The getting there is fun, even when you have issues (so far not too much for you)! I've made 4 drive-the-rods trips from Maryland, USA to Bonneville (2100 miles each way) and each trip was unique. Have a lekka one Diff and the gang!
Glad you enjoyed it! 2100 miles sure is a long haul!
Dirky is a chad
It's a tricky deal when your using an A frame bar to tow with. It will pull and drag your truck when you turn.A tow bar is different it will adjust the turning radius while you drive. Maybe should have installed windows and a heater in flytrap along with the raising of the rear end lol. Looks like a lot of fun traveling to your destination a good camping trip to the desert and bon fire and then some. Take care Div and crew have fun.
Boooooom !!!!
Rock and Roll !!!
Excellent trip.
I towed my '47 mercury from Calif. to Wisconsin with a tow bar like that. My front wheels on the Merc started flopping back and forth, lock to lock. I put some pillows on the seat until they rubbed the steering wheel. The friction of the pillows. was enough to stop the flopping. The Merc has set in my barn in Wisc. for 35 years. Some day I might get around to finishing it. Until then I'll just watch "Rat Rods from So. Africa" follow his dream builds.
PS. I wish you would drive on the correct side of the road--- it scares the hell out of me when you pass a car coming from the opposite direction.
"Correct " is relative to reference! 😅
most scenc video thus,,stubbornel y beautifull yet perisharbly remote
no disrepecy implied or intended.keep the drivin videos comng please..im clearly wrong but i imagined long brown grass full of wild animals
i love the die windpop ceiling . very colourfull, spend hours just watchin around..mst of our outback roadhouses ceilings are filled with ladies underwear hanging off ceiling.rules are must be ladies underwear /clean/and donated by wearer not removed by elsewhere .
South Africa has many different landscapes, and you do get the long grass and wild animals as well🙂
Try making side curtains that pop in as needed. Like the early cars and jeeps . Keep dry my friend
Man! I miss that place. Just watching you okes drive through Meiringspoort and makes me want to pack up and come back😢. Next year for sure!!
Come bru! There's no place like SA. I traveled extensively and lived in many places for 10 years, but Africa kept calling me back!
@ratrodsafrica That's the plan Div ! Just we've been in Texas close on 20 years and have a lot that we need to resolve before that can happen.
Hi guys having fun on your trip like seeing your shows 😂
Dankie manne
Nou is ek eers jaloers!!
Join ons volgende jaar!
Why can I see windows and a heater happening for flytrap, thanks for bringing us on the trip. Great video. Have a lekka one Div
It should be flat glass so Div (diff) could add an electric heater and side glass with window seals and gaskets. 🤔
...Or eat a lot of beans and wear a noise plug for self-created methane heat, his choice? 🤢😂
Yes, I think side windows might just happen...😅
🤣🤣
Great scenery Div
Barefoot pointing out the filler cap opening with his lit cigarette
He's a wild man! 😜
What's your point?
@@ratrodsafrica He seems ready for anything.
Hey Div,
A few days ago when the internet was blowing up with news about the snow in South Africa I had to check to see it it had gottin down to your neighborhood.
I see that you were spared.
But it looks like your trip took you up into the colder weather.
I will never get used to your driving on the wrong side of the road !
When cars pass you going the other way I have found myself cringing and ducking away.
Be Well, Stay Warm
Yes, that was way up in the North from us. "Wrong" is relative to reference! 😂
Hay Divy...looks like u and the booitjies are gona have a skop of note. Enjoy my Man...look forward to the next episode
Bucket list stuff my bru!
Have fun in the dust, with the rust 👍
Time off for good behavior I see....good for you brother hope you guys had fun
Afro special , no saftey chains and rear brakes, 😂, maybe tracking out, is tyres scrubbing, i thought spring was there already, have a lekka week,
Our weather is completely messed up this year!
@ratrodsafrica we flooding out in uk and Europe,
@DPaint-v5j Sounds like weather worldwide is crazy. Mates in Canada also flooding out
Crikey ol' mate, can't believe you didn't know to tie down the steering wheel . . . disappointed you're not infallible after all
No one is infallible!😅 (Secretly though, the old man wanted to prove to himself that he could drive the POS all the way...)
Check the front end alignment, you may need more caster to get it to tow correctly.
Definitely more castor
Nice one
Diff, I know it’s not my business to ask, but I’m curious what was the issue was with H A.
I can’t see where you would’ve been doing anything wrong, unless you were videotaping them.
Great video! Thank you for taking us along for the ride ! 👍
They did not want me to video them...
Go guys!
yep, you need more caster
Yes, sir! You need more caster to keep the wheels self centering! And don’t they require safety chains in S.A.? Just wondering.
Bringing the rust to De Rust 😂
😁👍
cool man buena onda !!
You need to cut some plastic for side windows so you can stay dry and warmer .
👍👍👍
👍
✌
Diff I've used an EMPI tow rig to pull my VW bug and my Porsche 914. You just have to tie off the steering wheel.
I have 3 questions. One is why the plastic bag and two why no vacuum hose on the distributor and 3 why there are no safty chains
The plastic bag works great for reducing friction and squeaks, instead of messy grease. The vacuum advance was messing us around, so we pulled of the pipe and she ran fine. Safety chains? I guess we are just cowboys, but I've never thought that a thin piece of chain will help much...
Tie the steering wheel up that way it will only turn a little.
Lekker jol man, the more caster you have, the better your A bar will work just as the steering wheel will go to centre if you let go of it after turning, I think. .
Yes agree, more castor. Especially since the stance was changed.
For our American friends and subscribers 500 km.is about 300 miles,200 km. is about 120 miles.
Na vet pret gelyk een van di dae kom kuier oom hier bo 😅😅😊
Well .. no heater in the truck... don't give a ×#%&.. Diff's off to the rodeo! All said, and done, miles o smiles had by all👍.
😁👍
I would say where it has been lowered that the caster angle is probably not enough to center it and also the rear end being higher than the front doesn't help it any
I think you are spot on!
First, wishing you well wishes and hope you had a blast. on the arms attached to flytrap drill out some adjustment left to right. loosen bolts and pull it a little should find center if the car frame, mounts are wonky. It might have been where the truck was loaded and the tow vehicle was lifting the front of flytrap causing it to go off kilter? What was up the bikers butt?
Thanks. I don't get the question?
👍
H.A. Are just motorcycle enthusiasts……. Not into Rat Rods apparently 🧐😎
Boa tarde.
Essas estradas da África parecem com as daqui do Brasil.
Frank de caraguatatuba litoral Norte de São Paulo. Brasil
Dif you just thought you would save gass by letting bare pull you.😊
With the tow bar, the caster is probably the problem, as it can be nearly impossible to back a vehicle in using one.
Agree that it is castor
Good to see old men doing what old men should be. driving out into the desert to behaving like teenagers 🤣
🤣👍
I see theres a 4 cylinder in the brown truck . What kind of motor and tranny is it. Thanks for bringing us along and a big Hello from Wyoming
The frame and drive train is stock standard Nissan Hardbody. 2.4 liter 4 cylinder with 5 speed tranny. You can see the whole build in the playlist "Budget Rat Truck Build ".
@@ratrodsafrica awesome i will definately watch that one . Thanks Diff
🇨🇦The reason the A frame didn't work is the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the truck. 😁
😂👍
Dif, when towed a Model A Ford, I had to disconnect the drag link.
Tow bar will not work if the caster is not correct
That's what I say too!
Safety chains are for doubters…….
Haha, exactly!
That bird in the back sounds like the battery needs to be changed in its fire alarm.
😂
Dirk. Where’s Lola? 👍🏴
😆Lola stayed with Mommy, it was a boys trip!
@@ratrodsafrica Ali got another one to look after 👍🏴
Hey diff !!! Tell me is this an annual event or how now. Because if it is I'd like to add it to my bucket list. Please let me know. If I missed it I'm sorry ❤
Yes, Pandemonium happens every year. Bucket list stuff indeed!
You knew you were going high altitude. Where were your gloves, wool socks, and long underwear?
Had it all, except the gloves...
