    This inspired me to make some mini mossariums for friends out of little glass bottles. Hobby Lobby is a great place to find a wide assortment of glass containers with lids for cheap. Next I'm planning on making a larger one out of a giant glass light bulb.

    Can you do a video on decorative self sustaining terrariums that require indirect to almost no sunlight? I find I can make terrariums but they aren't very practical because you don't benefit from air purification and they take up too much room next to the window that could be used for more useful air purifying plants.

    • @frankierorrer1877

      dat asian kid that wouldn't work since there is nothing to give the plants nutrients or eat the algae that would over run the plants for the little nutrients in the "tank".

    • @gaelleselfslagh949
      @gaelleselfslagh949 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was about to ask this aswell, curious if this is possible and how large it would have to be.

    • @gaelleselfslagh949
      @gaelleselfslagh949 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I was thinking about this question too. I don't know if it would be possible and how large it would have to be? In my case I wouldn't mind if I would have to get schrim/snails and small bugs, but I would rather not have fish. Or they would have to be able to survive a nuclear disaster.

    • @mspeir
      @mspeir 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except his brine shrimp aquarium (glass block) died out. The problem with brine shrimp is that they only eat at their juvenile stage. Once they reach adulthood, they lose the ability to eat then breed and die. AND they do not eat their dead or their detritus. Brine shrimp are not self sustaining. They produce so many young in a generation that they quickly overwhelm the ecosystem in the tank. Plants alone cannot keep up with nutrient export. The shrimp must be harvested.

  • @anniemaes283

    I don't think this is the right video to ask on, but: how do isopods (like pillbugs) do in terrariums? My native terrarium has some mold in it, and apparently no springtails to clean it up. However, since pillbugs are really common here, I was thinking of taking some from outside and putting them in my terrarium. But what would happen? Would they end up eating all the plants?

    • @dapperraptor6161
      @dapperraptor6161 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends how big the terrarium is, if it is too small than pill bugs will probably eat the plants. I have had luck with a couple of them in pickle-jar sized terrariums, so as long as it's a decent size the pill bugs will probably do a good job of cleaning up.

    • @anniemaes283
      @anniemaes283 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a pretty small terrarium, with only one big plant, two mosses, and a bunch of small plants that grew from the dirt.

    • @dapperraptor6161
      @dapperraptor6161 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say put in a pair of small ones, and see how that goes.

      I'm still going to wait for Serpa to reply

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Like the others said, the size of the container will somewhat dictate your results. If you get a few smaller isos, they should do the job without causing too much damage. However if you can obtain some tiny millipedes instead they actually take care of mold better. In either case just monitor if they eat the plants or not. If they do, just remove them. My isos tend to nibble on my plants, but they grow large and fast enough that they can't keep up.
      Also pick out any excess mold with tweezers. It won't spread as much or at all if you keep pulling it out.

    • @rainygay
      @rainygay 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      would that even work? worms need oxygen, moss would grow into a mat and block oxygen from the soil, i think

  • @TheCalypso923

    Just a question because this terrariums are fantastic are growing plants that enjoy humidity. Would that in theory mean that I could grow things like peppermint or lavender successfully??

  • @rogierius
    @rogierius 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my terrarium the glass is constantly covered with droplets of water. And this is still after four week of leaving the 5 liter winebottle open. I added a modest amount of water and have been removing moisture with a dry towel ever since, because it obscures the view and I am told eventually only one side should be foggy. I wonder if there is some science or calculations to the watering you normally do? To me it seemed you put in quite a lot of water for such a tiny container. I am surprised if the glass on the inside isn't constantly fogged up.

  • @oscarroque01

    Nice... What's the life expectancy with these types of enclosed Terrariums? Does adding the springtails increase likelihood of success? Thanks

    • @GamingXperience
      @GamingXperience 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      life expectancy should theoretically be infinite if its sealed well and if your plants dont start to rot.
      Thats what happened to mine all the time untill i put some springtails in them that i caught myself, thats also the answer to your seconds question. They are amazing at keeping the terrarium alive. The first one i made was just some sand and dirt from outside with some moss and grass, pretty bad tbh, i just wanted to test how it would work out. It startet rotting pretty quickly but when i put my springtails in, they basically ate everything that died.
      That was 3 months ago. I havent opened it since, and everything is growing just fine.
      So if you wanna make one yourself just try it, you should get some pringtails though. I caught maybe 20 of them in my garden and now, 3 months later i have a box with a population of a few thousand.
      Buying them is probably a better idea if you dont wanna search for them like i did.
      I just wanted to see if i could do it wouthout buying anything. :D

    My terrariums are pretty hit and miss, only 1/3 actually keep on going. Most just die off after a few days or a week. Even if its just moss. It starts smelling really terrible once I open it up again and the plants inside are dead. Sometimes the terrarium recovers once I open it but dies a few days after being closed. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

    • @JonesyJoe
      @JonesyJoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im not an expert but you might be over watering them? I have a few and I try to make sure that there is just enough moisture in the false bottom, usually this moisture will evaporate and will keep the plants hydrated!! Hope this helps :)

      I found them by digging a few inches in the compost heap and under a pile of rotting wet leaves in a hedge. They are not the white type, but they do the same job. Some time ago i tried to put some shredded moss, some uncooked rice grains and some wet bread in half a plastic bottle and buried under a bunch of leaves, as i found in an internet forum, but instead of a swarm of springtrails after five days I only got 2-3 after two weeks, but if you want to try ... also try putting some sweet potatoes in it

      SerpaDesign I tried a sort of moss that grows on the side of the tress, its really hard to find cause of our hot weather. In the terrarium it rotens everytime plus some small plants that i cant identify , but what works is when I put a seed in it , it grows well beside of the plants that died and rotens

    • @ImAlwaysR1ght
      @ImAlwaysR1ght 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you put it on a bark substrate? The moss that grows on trees needs bark or some kind of wood to grow on. Basically you try to replicate the conditions where you found it growing.

    This is a beautiful mossarium but am I the only one who felt like the constant moving of the tweezers was like watching an unsatisfying video

      It's not a true Florence Flask, but I believe it's around 1000mL based on the measurements.

    Have you ever thought about keeping ants? It would be a really cool way to combine your love of terrariums with a really cool pet. If you want to check out what a terrarium with ants can be like. Check out the antscanada channel on TH-cam.

      I am subscribed to Ants Canada already and follow his content regularly. I definitely want to keep them at some point, but I don't know when.
