    In 1976 when I started in law enforcement, one of the first things I was told was, "Locks are to keep honest people out." I can tell you through my experience an observation, if anyone want to get into your property or computer, for that matter your security system, the criminal empire already knows how to do it.

      in 1978 when I joined the Navy, I learned that locks only slow down a criminal. Safes were rated in how many man/minutes it would take to breach. They are part, but only part, of a comprehensive security plan.

    Nice summary of all the problems with shimmable locks. You could also have included common bypass methods such as comb pick on MasterLock padlocks or twisting the actuator directly for American locks. LockPickingLawyer has lots of examples for these.
    Basically if you have a padlock that can be locked without a key, it's a crap lock.

    These things work only on the cheapest locks you can possibly find.
    And for shimming attacks as in 3:00 there are much more efficient tools available.
    Also LPL already demonstrated how these two wrenches are used more efficiently.
    The easiest way to open these locks would be a simple wave rake or even a comb pick.

    • @eckerjoe
      @eckerjoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Get on the cross and don’t look back
      GOD, PLEASE COOK MY DINNER
      Some people believe God can work miracles, like cure advanced cancer or save people in terrible plane crashes. The Bible tells us that God can do anything, he can even move a mountain into the sea. These are extraordinary things.
      I would just like God to do something simple. When I get home from work late and dead tired, I would like to put my food on the kitchen table and have God cook it for me.
      Or, if that is selfish of me, I would like him to notice when an elderly woman, alone in her cold house, is dying from hypothermia and make the house warm for her. Or, if she has become too weak to get out of her chair, to make her a cup of tea and boil her an egg.
      Oddly, there is no known case of God doing any of these very simple things--things that almost any human could, and would, do for someone in need.
      God only does things that could happen without God--a proportion of people with cancer do go into remission, and sometimes there are survivors of plane crashes. But dinners do not cook themselves and cold houses do not make themselves warm.
      Think about this for a moment. It means the world behaves EXACTLY as it would if there was no God at all.
      If only God would just boil an egg once in a while. But he won't.

      I have been called out to remove Master #120D Tiny Brass padlocks from electric meter boxes for a homeowner. They lost the key. I had trouble unlocking them, you need the much smaller than normal picks for these, which I did not have with me. Clipped them off. Amazing client did not have some pruning shears to do it herself.

    It’s not that locksmiths don’t want to teach people how to open locks, it’s because they have professional ethics. You put it on the Internet and let people learn it, but you don’t know if he will steal it. The lock is to make every family safe, and it’s not safe for everyone to know.

    • @chrisosborne4731
      @chrisosborne4731 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. I think lock security should be treated exactly like computer security. The locks featured here have clear vulnerabilities that can be prevented. Lock makers that still produce these locks rely on consumer ignorance. Raising awareness is the only way to get consumers to avoid poor locks. These locks can have a purpose in securing inexpensive material (clothes, generic documents, etc), but should never be used for high security (guns, computers, jewelry). This video helps raise awareness that flawed locks are still in common usage and consumers need to learn of these flaws so they know what to look for.

      Nope, honest people do not need deterrance or resistance.. it's the creeps you are/are not protecting against. In USA, the threshold for minimum acceptable security is frighteningly low. We do not take security as seriously as we ought to. A higher threshold is common elsewhere in the world.

    Just learn how to pick! It's actually kind of a fun fidget hobby. Saved my ass multiple times... and it always works.. once you get good at it. As far as bypass methods, most are very lock specific and you need knowledge of the internals of that specific lock to do it. Padlock shims are cheap and work on most budget pad locks. Honestly, if you're going the destructive route, angle grinder and cut off disc.. zzzt.. done. Btw that clear lock is a practice lock. It's designed to be easy to open. All the pins are usually rounded so that you just have to get them in roughly the right place. It's meant to teach the basics and fundamentals of actual picking. If you're going the lazy route, get a pick gun. Either a snap gun or one of the electric ones all work great on 80 percent of locks you will encounter. To the locksmiths.. yes you are right, this stuff is not as easy as it looks on TH-cam.. however, with practice, research, and the right tools.. you can get into probably 80 percent of the stuff you come across. Cars are a whole different story.
