Well that ain’t exactly mistreating them is it, hunting is a natural part of life especially out in the country. People are far too removed from where food comes from unfortunately.
@@yungamurai You could definitely make a strong argument, even as a red-blooded omnivore who hunts, that it is at least pretty close to mistreatment when you hunt them. It is certainly not a very nice thing to do, at least.

ok listen people i live in brass town ive gone to the possum drop for as long as i can remember. This is the best this possum has ever lived eating scraps and sleeping on a dog bed ive helped catch the possum they lower the box so slow it really does not look like its moving then when they're done they release the thing and it goes off and lives its happy little life. So go and worry about people who are being cruel to animals like the people who take part in Canadian seal hunts not good hearted people like us.

Okay first off, being republican has NOTHING to do with this. I’m republican and I can proudly say I’m STRONGLY against this. This is ridiculous. This terrifies the animal, it’s torture for it. So what it eats? It eats in the wild without all the stress. It stresses it out and terrifies it being out of its natural habitat. It has no idea what’s going on. One opossum on Instagram called millieopossum was injured during this and had to have her leg amputated to save her life because it was broken and so badly infected. I’m sure there were plenty of others injured during this so don’t you dare say this is the best ‘they’ve ever lived’ because I can assure you, it is not.

Reading the comments... you think because the opossum isn't injured, it's not cruel to terrify one, to exploit it... it's very cruel and abusive... as has been proven by multiple affidavits presented by veterinarians.
If you think this is cruel, you better be vegan, because this is a birthday party compared to what happens on industrial farms.

That last guy's statement about how they turn it loose, it runs across the road, we run over it and have it for New Year's dinner. Wow, that's the pinnacle representation of intelligent humanity at its best. Does the fact that possums are often roadkill, are hunted and eaten, and are in abundance in NC make it alright to treat one in this manner? Personally, I would feel uncomfortable celebrating, while a caged animal cringes in fear, having no idea what is going on or what is going to happen to it.

Cruel to the animal...use a stuffed one...this is mean and terrifies the opossum. Hunting, eating and killing them does not make you "know all about opossums" duh?
If you are not a wildlife biologist or have studied animal behavior, you are not qualified to state whether or not the animal is 'injured'...there are other types of injuries besides physical....proof exists that these opossums have suffered physical injury, BTW!
Tell you what, back in the day, *I* was stressed when a possum came into my yard, did her stinky bathroom business at night, then my terrier had to roll in it, and her young owner then had to wash her all down! I think this one is enjoying the "elevator"!

Sorry, but it's not the opossums fault that we have build roads in what was initially their home first! There are lots of people that walk out in front of cars & get killed everyday...human roadkill! Worked in a hospital...saw it every day!

I agree with Bobbie4313.....the clear cage didn't even bump onto the stage. There were no dogs barking near it and no people anywhere much near. If the cage had just 1 more air hole, the possum would have jumped out! Looking at her, she clearly was curious and NOT scared a BIT!!!! If PETA is successful, I hope Brasstown finds a way to continue the tradition with a stuffed possum drop, a large dancing possum figure, and some satire about PETA!!!!! LOVE your Christmas parade! U are the greatest!

If they want to drop a possum, why doesn't some local dress up in a possum suit - just think of the honor that person would receive. I'm sure since they know so much about this animal someone can make a good replica of one - you could even hang that person by its "tail". As long as they don't hunt and eat the wearer for New Year's dinner, all is well.

Absolutely no one can come up with a legitimate complaint about the "Possum Drop".. Not PETA or anyone else. It is all done in a fun way and even the "possum" can't complain.. Good clean fun and any one of the many thousands attending will say the same. Way to go Clay! Keep up the good works.

Looks like people having a good time and no harm to the possum. People go on amusement rides and drop themselves farther and faster and have fun doing it. If I was a possum I would be thinking, "I wish it was higher and faster....it would be more fun". All the naysayers here need to get a life. Get a sense of humor. Get on a carnival ride with bright lights, loud noises and have fun.

I heard about this from my ma. She recently moved to NC. We thought it was funny that people would drop a Possom. I think the little guy looks fine. What people need to think about is, animal protection people choose and pick what they will protect. If you had a Cockroach drop, or a snake drop, I don´t think anyone would say a word.

The worst I see here is that they just leave it there in the cage, instead of immediately letting it go. As in, they let it sit there for a long while and let people take photos - I could be wrong, but aren't camera flashes harmful to animals? Maybe just dogs/cats? I'm not 100% sure. But when I use to work at an animal shelter they'd advise taking photos without flash when we took photos of the animals.

Obviously no one connected with this event has any understanding of stress & how it is affecting this animal. Absolutely barbaric! Research this on the internet...the photos taken by the locals themselves prove that this animal is stressed, hiding in this awful container and injured!!!!! This is not educational ... serves absolutely NO purpose other than to feed some hillbilly's ego!!!!

Possums have a tendency to have heart attacks. Putting one in a cage with nothing in it and nowhere to hide and that's transparent, even the floor, is absolutely cruel. Use a stuffed possum or something!
U are a fool. I've caught many opossums in steel jawed traps and never seen one have a heart attack. LOL The truth of the matter is that opossums aren't much more than big rats that kill chickens in a very cruel manner.

Nor is it our fault, humans built roads years ago! There were roads when I was born and if that is a reason for you to badmouth a good man for doing nothing to harm a possum then you owe him an apology.We have plenty of possums here in our part of NC and other animals too. The roads havent jumped up and killed them.nor do people here kill them. I am going to when spring arrives and they show up in my yard and get under my porch, that is unless you want them...

Not necessary...I have a real good imagination ... and being an empathetic person, I have a pretty good understanding of what the opossum is experiencing. For human purposes and to keep the event to scale ...it would be necessary to hoist the crane up a LOT higher for a human to fully appreciate what the animal is going through.

I won't kill the two innocent possums or opossums. Are you saying they have sense enough NOT to walk into a container but will walk directly in front of an oncoming vehicle that can't possibly stop in time to avoid it, or if they try, it may kill their entire family in an accident, I suppose you think that is better than running over it?

I do believe in the beginning God made animals so man wouldn't go hungry. They rode on asses and I suppose you would critcize Jesus for riding on one as he did. Research your Bible. Fish are also Gods doings! Do you ever eat fish? lobsters, crabs, etc? Why not pitch a hissy fit on all the restaurants that serve those? It would get you noticed in high places.
