The Gervon Dexter first step actually got kinda explained recently, apparently Florida asked him to read and mirror before taking his first step rather than having a gap responsibility
@Chandler Russell it's so stupid that I almost wouldn't believe it if it wasn't even more unbelievable that a freak athlete at DT doesn't know to go when the ball gets snapped
@Chandler Russell It makes sense if their thinking is he’s so athletic he can make up the ground quickly anyway. Or maybe they didn’t trust their linebackers.
I think this also shows that some players make better pro’s than college players because of the things they are asked to do instead of putting them in the best situations to succeed. Pickens said the same thing. He will be a better pro.
It’s kinda stupid, because we are just guessing how a player will be. Tom Brady is the goat, but if any team picked him in the first round, they would have been made fun of.
@@xguy9999 I like thinking about it more as a grade on where you took a chance on a prospect where you did (relative to your team’s needs); Brady did seriously pan out as a day 3 guy and became the GOAT against all odds, but there were presumably lots of players still worth the risk of selections in previous rounds that could help anybody’s team that wouldn’t have been available in round 6 when Brady definitely would be. To me it’s less about predicting how good a player will be and more how much sense the risk of taking a certain prospect at the time they did makes. The lions are a good example taking RB Gibbs so early- he’s a great prospect, but it may not have made sense to take him that high. I agree predicting career success is a totally futile exercise though. This stuff is impossible.
@@jacksonhelm9976 I know the nfl is all about positional value, but i do respect a GM who go get the best player that fits their team. Ultimately they will be judge on their decisions.
Who can blame him, our fan base is insanely toxic right now to anyone who doesn't fully agree with every pick Holmes made. Even the post he made Friday, people didn't even read it or know who made it, they just called him braindead or a dumbass because he disagreed. It's disgusting.
@@lancex5195 everyone is saying the same tired takes we all know they drafted devalued positions end of story. If they work out does the success not matter because they didn’t do the process how everyone wanted them to
@@Chem329 and you're making the same stupid tired argument of "well if they don't bust they'll be good players." Yeah, no on is arguing that, but drafting is a crapshoot, there's no reason to think these specific guys are any less likely to bust than anyone else drafted in the first round but y'all always pretend like they're guaranteed to hit. If that's the only reasoning and justification you have for your argument, it's a pisspoor argument.
@@lancex5195 I agree our fans are insufferable right now. It’s one thing to say you think the picks will pan out based on Holmes’ history but to say we drafted well is just wrong
Dude...let me just tell you, I started watching NFL draft content a couple of months ago and I immediately felt like your stuff is so much better than others when it comes to analyzing how teams are built. The Darnell Wright to Chicago pick is a perfect example for this. The Bears either really have to change their blocking scheme or hope Wright can improve a ton when running out wide. Keep up the great work but dont forget to take a break as I can see you're working overtime almost daily.
Regarding the lions draft, in three years if this draft class comes out as, 2nd best RB, Best LB, Best S/Nickel, 2nd best TE, very successful draft positional value be damned
I think this a much better grading system then most places use. In the 5th round, you’re really really just taking a gamble. If you need to improve a position group, taking a few day three guys at that position is the best bet. Reflecting that in you grades it good.
Love the lions to Seahawks comparison. Hawks used to kill the drafts with Pete Carrol fresh out of college, then with success Schneider stopped drafting for talent and went for reaches, "their guys", cultural fits, etc and that talent dried out which started to impact them, now however after entering rebuild Schneider went back to drafting for talent and value and has killed back to back drafts imo. Holmes of lions was rebuilding this team perfectly then after a bit of success last year on the rise potentially setting themselves up to lead the division this year they took all the draft assets they had and spent on luxury picks going RB, LB, TE, S, QB with their first 5 picks with a lot of reaches. They got in over their head imo and threw away all concepts that lead them here, shame really.
except they didnt go after culture players, they went after the best players at position people didnt value. Lions got a lot of talent, the best lb, the best receiving te or at least a close 2, the best slot. All have high floors and high ceilings. They arent incredibly valuable position but they all add the most immediate value while also being good pieces for the furture. Yall are acting like we reached on players that they hope they can develop into good players. Lions took great players they hope they can develop into even greater players.
Yeah of the 3 teams who had two first round picks with one in the top 10 to work with, the Seahawks came out better on top even with appeasing Pete by taking a really good RB in the 2nd round. Witherspoon is a great compliment to Woolen (and in line really to the physical defensive backs Pete has worked with) and JSN is big help for Geno Smith who gets a new weapon when they go 11 personnel. Or when Lockett goes down a few games just cuz.
This shows you have very little knowledge of the players in this draft, or the history of drafting and what has worked and what hasn't. They drafted BPA, regardless of position. The highest graded player on their board was drafted at every one of those picks. Why? Because good GM's don'y draft for "positional value" they draft great football players. And you know what happens when you have great football players? You have a better chance of winning.
I love when he brought up the raiders and failed to realize that they had a mock guy making those picks ... so many people are butt hurt about the lions and it makes me laugh cus the lions didn'tdo what they wanted . Like the guys that wanted mayar and are crying about LaPorta , what makes it funny is most of them hated hock and they think LaPorta is hock 2.0 when if anyone is hock 2.0 it is Mayar
I discovered your channel during this years draft process, and I have to say you’re incredible at what you do. I truly enjoy listening to you talk about these prospects, and it’s clear you know your stuff when it comes to these prospects. I can’t wait for your video about the Steelers!
Shoutout to you Marcus, this draft season has been incredible this year. I literally had zero time to do my own evaluations so your draft content both on here and Patreon has been a huge help. Excited for the Colts grades especially.
Recently started watching your channel and I didn’t realize how fun the draft process can be! You have a way of making what I previously thought of as a boring process just a really enjoyable viewing experience. Keep up the good work!
I think the criticism of Gibbs and Campbell in round 1 is fair (at least to an extent) if you disagree that these players don't provide top-end talent at their respective positions. Just to shout out the phrase "bad process" as a lot of people do right now is to easy for me though. Pretty much everyone agrees that this class is short on top end talent, but rather deep, especially at TE and DB. For the Lions to pick up DB Branch and TE LaPorta in round 2 while chosing do go for LB (where - if any - there really was just one top-end talent) and RB first (where there were two - and the other one was allready gone) is pretty much the only way to go, if you wanna come up with this kind of haul. You can argue that going for a little lesser talent at more valubale positions or for more upside instead of immediate help would have been a smarter draft startegy. If the most immeadiate talent to ensure immediate help to win now is your highest priority, this process was perfectly fine. The other big thing for me is the perspective on QBs and here I strongly disagree with TFG. The narrative that you gotta have an elite QB and if you don't you gotta do everything in your power to get one, is way too black and white imo. The (assumed) Top-QBs the Lions could have realisticly drafted since Brad Holmes took over were: Zach Wilson Trey Lance Justin Fiels Mac Jones Kenny Pickett Malik Willis Desmond Ridder Sam Howl Anthony Richardson Will Levis None of these guys have hit (yet) and even if you argue that we've seen enough of Fields to label him as a hit and project Richardson to hit as well - that's still only a hit-rate of 20%. Drafting QBs is an absolute crapshoot. Except for very few players like Luck and Lawrence nobody has any idea of what they are doing. Most of the league right now thinks you can't value QBs too high. Looking at the contracts of the top QBs and the extra tax to trade up tp selcet a QB in the draft, I would disagree. I'd argue the value most teams attribute to QBs right now actually is too high. So you can participate in this high risk high reward kind of game in the hunt for a special QB-talent (together with pretty much every other team in the NFL) or you don't. And I like to think opting not to do so, is far from a bad decison. You act in a niche that is far less populated and by that you you can assamble a lot of value from the QB-hunting teams that do bnot directly compete with you; either via trade, as the Lions, Texans and Seahawks did by trading away Stafford, Wilson and Watson (all these teams got better by treading away their so called franchise QB), via draft (you don't gamble on QBs and by doing so are left with more options of great non-QB-players) and via free agancy (as you don't have to pay huge QB contracts you can spent more money on other positions).
Looking back in the past 10 years, every team that won a Super Bowl had a top 10 QB… even if the hit rate is low, you still have to try. Also the term “bad process” is fair in this case with the players on the board both at 6 and when they traded down to 12 🤷🏻♂️
@@michaelpatras9970 Bad Process? What does that even mean? They had a great day 2 the process isn’t bad the picks were terrible on day one. More so the Gibbs pick bcuz RBs are so expendable they gave Swift to Philly for free because if Swift walks the compensation pick is the same they traded to get him.
@@Byronic19134 Yea “bad process” is getting an RB at 12 after paying one in the off-season and giving away Swift for free. Then taking a linebacker with other more impact positions on the board, and finally Hooker who is old, hasn’t been in anything close to an NFL system, ACL injury, and puts them in QB purgatory for a few more years. Gibbs, Campbell, and Hooker all aren’t terrible players but they didn’t prioritize valuable positions hence “Bad process”.
@@konstantingrassl Joe Flacco was close to 10, but at the time top 10. Foles didn’t get them to that game, a near MVP season from Wentz did. And Manning was washed fs but was still borderline top 10 🤷🏻♂️
@@konstantingrassl Also I agree with him here, but I definitely have disagreed with many of his takes before. That being said, I still enjoy his channel and think he does a great job with analysis
The sad thing is if gibbs and campbell are studs and the guys mocked to the lions turn out to be average none of these guys will admit being wrong. They will continue to beat the positional value drum. Everyone said this draft was weak and after mid 1st the talent leveled off. The only real question will be if they should have taken carter or wilson at 6.
This guy shit on the lions and then gives his team (packers) all A grades lol two TE first four picks alot more positional value, even though our TE is C lmao this guy just salty we didn't go for anthony Richardson. He couldn't mock anything else all draft season. Just AR over and over.
I love the lions but you hit the nail on the head. “Went to a steakhouse and ordered a burger”. People be saying Gibbs is a good player but damn with how high we took him he better be the next Barry sanders
Marcus here’s something Dexter said in regards to his get off in his draft interview. Apparently he was taught to use a watch and mirror technique. I think that makes his tape a lot better!
Who now still thinks the Lions overdrafted. Everyone of those players worked out perfectly and Jared Goff is our franchise quarterback for the foreseeable Future
Wright was the best OT available amd will be the best pass protector in this class as a rookie. Also naturally slots into our biggest need, OT. That's an A
Nah he’s different from Jenkins. Wright is a true tackle. And although I respect his opinion and agree somewhat about blocking in space, Marcus has severely underestimated Wright. Skronski is a guard and he may be the most technically sound he woundnt make it at OT nor did he fit Poles’ criteria. We already have an athletic developmental LT in Braxton Jones, don’t need Broderick he needs to develop in pass pro. Wright besides Skronski, is the best at pass pro. Skronski severely struggled with length and power, again he’s a guard. While Wright shut down Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, Bryan Breese, and BJ O out of LSU.
@@youngboyxaj6692 Agree. Marcus isn't wrong in pointing out Wrights misses in the run game, but his power and overall movement ability is rare. I'd say based on film and their combine numbers, Wright is a better athlete at 335lbs than Jones is at 310. Not really sure why Marcus thinks Wright is a lower upside guy since he has the power and pass-pro to start from day 1. Jones and Skoronski might not even be playing tackle by week 8. The right side of the line is absolutely solid now imo. Bears will quickly have one of the top OL in the league at this rate.
@@billygalanis4015 Teven Jenkins will be playing LG this year since we've signed one of the better RGs in the league in Nate Davis. I've literally not seen a single report about Teven Jenkin's work ethic being questioned. He's one of the most competitive and aggressive linemen in the NFL and hasn't had conditioning/weight problems so idk what you're talking about. His neck injury was concerning because it's a more dangerous one but when he was on the field he was one of the better guards in the entire league via PFF.
The evaluation on the lions will not hold the test of time. In 1-3 years will look back and see how smart it was to grab the players you wanted. Hooker is Jared Goff with a higher ceiling plus escape ability. Which this team has and is only going up the ranks. I love how these draft experts get all butt hurt when it goes opposite of how they think it should instead of seeing the draft as a whole which was successful. New NFL offense wins defense just needs to make some plays.
@@jjb9571 And I respect that. I'm not even that hyper focused on what Kiper says because he's more often than not wrong on these prospects for example. Still,it feels like this team is going to get gashed up the middle for god knows how many yard up the middle over and over which will then lead us back to maybe 1-6 to start the year and then we have to play catch up. Doing it last year is understandable, but THIS year when you have a wide open division and the #1 DT falls into your lap at 6? It's just so confusing.
I love how you said how people compare Campbell to kuechly because he's white 😂😂😂 every year. I see a white dude, and he's always compared to another white person like bro you can be white and play like a black dude and vice-versa.
Gervon Dexter was told to “read & react” at Florida 😂 makes no sense. But poles and Eberflus already said that he’s definetely not gonna be doing that anymore. Just fyi
@@zackhurwitz9441 yeah that’s what Eberflus inferred. He’s gonna be the aggressor/gap shooter for that DL. Something that Justin Jones was last szn 😂 talk about potential upgrade of Dexter turns out
Thank you for doing these. They’re the only draft grades I watch cuz you actually cover so many damn dudes I have no idea are. Love laporta tho think B is kinda disrespectful cuz he’s an insta Hockenson replacement which is where he came from
I think the reason lions fans are lashing out is because there has been 50 years of trash, and now that we finally have real certified hope people are back to trashing us. Criticism is hard to accept when you’ve been called the worst franchise (and rightly so) by literally every other fan for so long. It’s very tiresome and I’ve only been a hardcore fan for 3-4 years. As for the Hendon Hooker over AR thing, I think most fans want to win a division this year more than potentially having an elite QB three years from now. Like it or not, Gibbs and LaPorta will have much greater impact THIS YEAR than AR would have. I understand that may be a short-sighted view but we lions fans haven’t gotten blessed with HOF QB play for the last 30 years. We live in a different reality lol. Great analysis!
Lions fan here and I love what Brad and Dan are doing, but I totally get you analyzing who teams get and for what value. Love the content man, and go lions!
The first couple minutes of the video highlights what I have been so frustrated with in the NFL community lately. So many people just blindly trust their team’s organization, with a complete lack of understanding on what a draft grade is. We are grading the DECISION TO DRAFT A PLAYER AT A CERTAIN VALUE, not necessarily saying the player is going to be trash. Fans of teams who draft well never need to use the ‘just trust the process’ or ‘let’s wait a few years before grading the draft’ excuses.
As a Viking fan I think Campbell will be an elite run stopper (a huge hole for DET) and may become the best ILB in the league by the end of his rookie deal. I see a Chad Greenway floor with who knows the ceiling. Also Will Levis will be a career backup. Hes not the guy
I imagine the Lion's tried to trade up and got outbid, then the shock pick of Witherspoon by Seattle threw them off. Then everything spun out of control. There was clearly some panic going on. I cannot believe thier moves, if your thinking RB in round one, clearly you just take BJ instead of trading down. Then even worse, where is the corner? Nobody to replace Akuda? Huh!? All the best players were sitting right there.
@@T--tr4cm Yep, they would be way better off with Witherspoon who is a superstar than any RB, Bijan has been awesome for Atlanta. The lions are having a good season, but there was definitely room to improve on the drafting. The TE pick was absolutely mint though, it makes up for the mess at the top easy. Cambell is great, they probably tried to trade down and take him but couldn't so they just said F it and picked their guy.
I really appreciate your opinions on the draft. I would like to search you up and just watch detailed analysis on specific teams I'm concerned about. 52 minutes sets me back quite a bit on time. It took me an entire 10 hour shift of service calls to watch one video. I love your content brother.
As a 🦁''s fan, I am really enjoying looking back a year later, laughing @ your "positional value" rating. You're right, it was a transformational draft!! Gibbs, Laporta, Branch, & Campbell showed you that your "good process" isn't the Lion's process. Thank God!! 💯🤣🤣🤣🤣 Mayer vs. history-making LaPorta!! Not a contest!!🤣 🤣 Grab & stash your future QB. The Lions did what KC & GB did, find and stash your guy. No game-changing players?? 1st 4 picks were all-rookie, 2 were all-pro. So much for your evaluation skills!! 🤣🤣IN BRAD WE TRUST!! #ONEPRIDE🦁💯
as a lions fan i agree with your grade i hate the gibbs pick at 12 if we got him in round 2 i would like it i would of rather wanted Christian Gonzalez with that pick. we had one of the worst defenses in the league and we go Gibbs like our o line was so good it made Jamal Williams look better than he really was so monty was gonna do fine. this draft class looks a million times better if we had christian instead of gibbs
Dude, thanks for the work you put into the channel. I enjoy listening to your analysis. Your point of view from an analyst stand point makes sense, but that's not how the Lions thought about it, and I don't think they're wrong. Jahmyr is going to be in the running for OROY. He is going to be a great WEAPON for the Lions, whether at RB, Slot, or however they use him. In terms of value to a team, Jahmyr is going to be highly valuable. He's not just a running back. I appreciate what you are saying, and it makes sense from where you stand as an analyst, but Mr. Holmes and the Lions War Room put in the work. Until proven otherwise, 'In Brad We Trust'
As a Bears fan, only reason I watched the 1st day after pick #10 was seeing whether DET or GB would pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Can't believe #12, #13, and #18 went by without him picked! Will be a mistake for years to come.
You DO realize the Vikings had more info on Levis than any other Team right? No doubt about it. If they passed on him at 23, I'm fine with it because I'm sure KOC and Liam Coen talked QUIIIIIIIITE a bit about him on top of all the work they did on him.
The Lions just held the door open for the Vikes to walk through and take the division again. If the positions were reversed, I'm sure the Vikes pounce on Richardson. I agree in principle about the Levis opportunity, except that I'd suggest OConnell is a much better judge of QBs, and if he had doubts, who are we to argue. The Vikes already have 3 young 2nd round CBs (picks 33, 42, 45) but only one quality WR, and teams were marking JJ out of the game, whereas the CB class was arguably deeper.
I'm really baffled by the Lions draft picks. I understand trading down but Christian Gonzalez at $#12 would have made so much sense. Heck i feel if they stayed put at #6 and took Carter, that would have been better than what they did. And Sam Laporta over Michael Mayer/Darnell Washington?? WOW! I really like Dan Campbell and they've done alot right the past two years, but this was confusing as hell.
Ok well you aren’t a scouter and you didn’t meet them or see them on the field in person. If they didn’t choose Gonzales there is a reason for it. They chose who they chose because they fit our team perfectly and they think highly of their character and feel for the game. It’s confusing to us because we literally don’t know shit lol so don’t listen to what the couch GMs have to say
@@BigWill219 GMs and "scouters" screw up picks all the time. People on YT create videos on prospects being busts, that turn out to be true. Look up thinking football's Zack Wilson video, that he made over 2 years ago. I've made mistakes, I've been criticized for them, that's how it works.
The day 2 TE picks I'm not sweating. Washington was dropping because of medical reasons and MANY teams (not only the Lions) were avoiding him. Day 2 the Lions set themselves up for value considering how some of the best available talents in day 1 were still not picked. But Day 1 was confusing since the Lions did all that moving just to end up with less.
As someone local to Charlotte I have watched the last few years of Grant DuBose. I actually love him as a steal. He can be physical after the catch, has shown the ability to make contested catches, and has returned punts as well. Charlotte had qb injuries all year this year, bur when Chris Reynolds was healthy in 2021, Grant was much more impactful.
If Hendon Hooker is probably a Jared Goff like ceiling and Jared Goff nearly got them to the playoffs (allowed them to over-acheive or break out in the first place) than... sounds like a good 3rd round pick to me. The problem with the Lions' draft is the ABSOLUTE wiffs they had in the first round and 3rd pick in the 2nd! But I see no problem with Hendon Hooker. Your undervaluing Goff imo.
Hear me out. The comment you made about moving Brian Branch to 12 and moving every other pick down I have not heard. But I did put up a super chat saying the Seahawks picking CB completely threw the lions off. And if you imagine Witherspoon at 6 and push everyone else down a pick you suddenly see a fairly solid game plan. At the end of the day they didn’t plan for for the Seahawk to break the mold and go CB in the first, that’s their fault. I think it’s not crazy to say Gibbs was supposed to go 18, Campbell and LaPorta in the second and third rounds in the same order. The draft was bad, but I think it’s easy to see how their entire board was turned upside down, and it’s their fault for not planning.
What I appreciate about your content is that you don’t get stuck on one opinion and you are willing to see things from a different perspective. I think you graded the Bears 1st round as a C originally, as did a lot of people. Now people are giving them slightly higher grades. Most Bears fans did not like the Dexter pick, but like you I see it as a solid upside pick. Do you also take into account draft capital and player trades (DJ Moore) in to your grade?
As a Lions fan, I agree with what you’re saying with these picks. The Lions obviously could have gotten better players with their picks. Gibbs at #12 was the most frustrating in my opinion, knowing Christian Gonzalez and Deonte Banks were on the board. With all that being said, I don’t hate the guys we got. Jamyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell and Sam Laporta are all players I think will help us win in year 1. Hendon Hooker is pretty confusing knowing he’ll probably not play much at all as a 3rd rounder. I don’t think this draft is a doomsday scenario for the Detroit Lions. I still have some faith Brad Holmes can recover. I’m not much of a draft guy, so I’ve been loving your videos lately Marcus. Keep up the good Work!
I like it that you break each player down and say why you like or don’t like. I just get annoyed when fans get all mad just because they don’t like the pick.
I think one thing to note with the lions draft is that they clearly were not convinced by the high end talent in this class for whatever reason, and also they definitely have special plans for gibbs imo, rb/wr hybrid and I think the pick was almost more about the options it opens up for Ben Johnson, but I completely get the issues from the point of view of positional value.
I also don't think the hooker pick prevents the lions from going and getting an elite qb. We have lacked a proper backup qb for years and yes a 3rd is a big investment but I don't think it in anyway locks the lions to him for the long term.
But additionally, I absolutely love the content Marcus so thank you! Although I do slightly disagree re the lions grade (as a biased lions fan) I completely understand the issues with value.
@@Booster45 Hendon Hooker isn't a proper year 1 backup at all. Its going to take at least a full year before he learns NFL verbiage and concepts, because almost nothing from the Tennessee offense will translate to the pros.

Vikings fan here - I am thrilled we went Hall instead of Levis. I think Levis is a really high likelihood for bust and I think Addison is a beast and underrated just based on his size (he is basically the same guy as Devonta Smith and that pick turned out great). Also, Hall took a late fifth and has some potential so what is the problem there? I think you are missing the boat on this and I like Blackmon a ton - again great value at what is basically a fourth rounder for a guy that has nearly the same measurables and production as Witherspoon (2nd best PFF score of the class behind Witherspoon too). Loved the Vikes draft for what little ammo we had going in (especially in comparison to last year's complete dud).
Let me start by saying love your content! Let me attempt to make a bit of a case for Detroit's draft. Bijan notwithstanding, the Lions walked away with THE top player at 3 positions RB, LB, and S (something to think about). Also note, that not all GM's even believe in "positional value". By trading away Swift, Gibbs is probably the starter now with Montgomery as the back-up. Regarding the QB situation, I can only assume this past season, Goff really performed better than the staff expected, so they felt no need to trade up for someone like Richardson (who could very well be a massive bust). Goff is still just 28 and I believe he is much more than just a "bridge" QB or "placeholder". I consider him about the 12 best QB based off last season. He already went to a Super Bowl (and only lost it by 3 points) so I know he is capable of leading a team to the promised land. I don't believe they intend to hand Hendon Hooker the keys anytime soon. They probably just wanted a potential high quality back-up on the cheap for the next 4 years (albeit one with more potential than the O'Connell's/Hayner's/McKee's of the world). All that being said though, yea they probably should have taken Van Ness or Skoronski and D. Banks with their 1st's.
I agree with virtually everything you've said about the Lions' draft up to this point. I've also had plenty of lengthy interactions with Lions fans over the last few days as well, and made my opinions about the many faults I found with their selections. It was not a good draft. But I'm (right or wrong, we'll find out) for whatever reason, much higher on Hendon Hooker than yourself, and what appears to be many others. In the same way virtually every draft class hinges on it's QB, Detroit's does as well. In the same way you're higher on Levis (who I thought was a 1st round caliber QB prospect as well). I also agreed that the best course of action was to trade up to #3, and select AR. But I think there's much that's been forgotten about Hooker, I thought he had some starting, even above average traits, and warranted a late 1st round selection, much like Levis once he'd slid into that range. Hooker was putting together an excellent season, prior to getting injured. His, nor Levis' age are really a concern for me. QBs are playing/starting in their mid to late 30's with regularity. I'm not saying either is Joe Burrow, but Burrow was also drafted at 24, then tore his ACL in his rookie season, where I screamed that he shouldn't be playing, he should have sat behind Dalton, while the offensive line was tended to. Unlike the Bengals, Detroit will have no choice but to sit Hooker. I think a comp you made for CJ Stroud ("Jared Goff with wheels"), is one that can apply to Hooker as well. Both have above average arms, solid decision making, both are excellent deep ball throwers, and by all accounts great leaders. I can sum it up more simply as, don't write off Hooker as a middling QB just yet, he has some evidence to the contrary on tape.
@ThatFranchiseGuy says that Jahmyr Gibs is basically like Deondre Swift (but a little tougher) and Hendon Hooker has same ceiling as Jered Goff. So I'm wondering if the Lions' logic for those picks is: "we're not planning on resigning Swift or Goff to long-term deals, so let's sign equivalent players who will give us similar production, but will be cheaper in the long-run because they'll be on rookie deals." Even so, that doesn't justify taking those players in the positions that they did. But then again, IIFC, there was a run on RBs early in the draft. Maybe they knew that was coming, and decided to take a top RB while they could?
Wasnt it clear when ur favorite team has Sean Clifford come to GB for a visit that he was probably the future backup QB. Like how is this a shocker even if u think the player isnt draftable.
I'm surprised at all of the Lions fans ganging up on you for a simple opinion. You posted your own honest thoughts on the Lions draft, but to Lions fans this was a transgression of the highest level. I may disagree with what people think about my team, but in no way will I take it personal like they did. This is not to say all Lions fans are like that tho! Good work TFG!
For the Vikings; Coaches could have genuinely not believed in Will Levis to be a +starter in the NFL, they spent a lot of time scouting him so I'd have to think that's the case. They have already invested significant capital into the secondary multiple times in several years. Internal sources said they had Addison as the #1 reciever in their draft (not sure about BPA). I think it came down to trusting Flores with guys coming back from injury and wanting to make sure their offense doesn't become JJ and nobody else. (They need some other targets should he get hurt / play hardball on contract).
Levi’s is ass too me lol I watched mostly high lights but not 1 highlight did he hit a receiver in stride and give them run after catch opportunities….he has a quick release tho …but he definitely mid
I dont watch college so i have no clue who these players are until they start getting mocked and picked so its always nice to hear peoples grades on them that do the research
i liked every packers pick aside Clifford and the Kicker. the kicker has been injured and really not impressive numbers as a kicker. might need crosby back and let him develop a year. ive also been pushing GB to draft Dubose, I think he has the tools to be a very good 3rd WR. A James Jones type role for this team. I also think Reed and Wicks have hidden talent because their lack of a good QB. Love what they did with the Dline and its very obvious theyre rebuilding because everyone they drafted is pretty raw and need 2 years to develop at least.
I disagree with the lions and Gibbs. As a fan I can’t tell you how many times it felt like opportunities were left on the field because A. Swift couldn’t see a gaping hole or B. Jamal didn’t have the speed to break through a hole. To the point where Ben Johnson had amon-ra in the back field as a RB. I think that’s why Gibbs was their guy and why they valued him so highly. Someone who can take advantage of the Oline we have. The team has also expressed their desire to use him out wide. Maybe like a deebo role? I think that type of versatility and explosiveness is worth the pick
LaPorta, based on combine results, is the superior athlete than Mayer. I do think Mayer is the better blocking TE, but that is not why the Lions picked up LaPorta. They picked him up for his offense. The Same with Jahmyr. Goff is their guy and they are going to surround him with the most weapons possible.
vikings fan here. i don't hate the addison pick. however, vikings were in the market for a WR and at that time, addison was the best available overall who just happened to be a receiver so I understand the pick. we got defense later in the draft and we'll see how they play out.
The blackmon pick for the Vikes was a head-scratcher at best imo. He is way to handsy and will be a flag magnet. Flores better be able to coach that out of him or he won’t last long.
Considering Kirk didn't blow up until his 4th/5th year, if Levis could blow up sooner, learn to use his mobility, have the better arm and somewhat improve on pocket presence (even a bit), he would be a *Kirkland Brand* Cousins with a 5th year option. He'll be ready for his 2nd contract by 27/28 which will probably be affordable AND tradeable even when he enters his 30s. Because if you wanted an even higher floor/higher ceiling QB, you gotta suck eggs to get a top draft pick.
Man this has already aged horribly in just one year lmao. "Mayer is objectively better than LaPorta and I think Musgrave is easily better too" yikes lol, at least you tried. Holmes is amazing Edit: it keeps getting worse. Hooker was always solely a backup dude. He was never going to be the starter dude
I don't understand the Jaren Hall pick yet either - moving up for SirVocea Dennis, taking Terrell Smith, Boutte, Coburn, Karl Brooks, AT Perry, Cory Trice, Dee Winters, Andrew Vorhees - all seemed like better options. I wuld have loved Jakorian Bennett but Brian Flores got his guy, and Blackman did cover Addison in practice every day
I appreciate the grades man. Your honest bout it. I’m biased cuz ima bears fan but I think weight was there target the whole time. He’s the most pro ready and he has intangibles u can’t teach. Run blockin could be better yes. He’s the best right tackle and that’s what they needed. I have no doubt in my mind he will only get better.
the problem with looking at picks through the lens of positional value is that positional value only applies based on how you predict that position will be used. rbs aren't valued because teams don't run the ball but when they did run it rbs were top value. the point is you don't know how the team will utilize the player. if you think of gibbs as a wr and they utilize him as one then I bet your grade is a little different. i think that's how the lions see him as well. also if you think campbell is stiff as a board you aren't paying attention.
I mean the Steelers and Jags use Najee Harris and Travis Etienne as 3-down backs who can catch respectively. Breece Hall and Kenneth Walker are explosive 2-down backs but even if their roles are minimized, they are VERY good at trying to rip explosives on the ground. Also their teams run a 2/3 back system so there are benefits to those type of guys being utilized as such. The grading doesn't change with Gibbs because he's in a position to be a 2-down guy while David Montgomery takes some of the touches. While the guys I mentioned before have been taken on value and have shown to contribute more even on their first year.
@@t4d0W that's my point. You're assuming he fits into this positional box and will be behind anyone. Tyreek hill was a rb too. U can put this guy on the field anywhere anytime. Assuming they do use him in that way you can't rate him as rb pick.
the lions could have had one of the greatest drafts ever from a surplus value perspective if they had taken carter, traded up for gonzales and then traded up for Levis. woow
Detroit will for sure have an incredible offense again, but they could have capitalized on all the incredible defensive talent in this draft and genuinely have a chance to make a superbowl push imo
The Gervon Dexter first step actually got kinda explained recently, apparently Florida asked him to read and mirror before taking his first step rather than having a gap responsibility
Thats a stupid coaching point, but that explains a lot.
@Chandler Russell it's so stupid that I almost wouldn't believe it if it wasn't even more unbelievable that a freak athlete at DT doesn't know to go when the ball gets snapped
Love it. His upside is so big!
He will be a better pro.
draft grades AREN’T stupid, glad we can talk about this analytically!
I love how he refines his grading systems for drafts, studs and duds, and deep dives every year. Shows real progression in his evaluation process.
Bro wanted to get the Lions out of the way ASAP
@@lancex5195 but I didn’t make that argument
Dude...let me just tell you, I started watching NFL draft content a couple of months ago and I immediately felt like your stuff is so much better than others when it comes to analyzing how teams are built. The Darnell Wright to Chicago pick is a perfect example for this. The Bears either really have to change their blocking scheme or hope Wright can improve a ton when running out wide. Keep up the great work but dont forget to take a break as I can see you're working overtime almost daily.
This guy and nfl stock exchange are my favorites
Regarding the lions draft, in three years if this draft class comes out as, 2nd best RB, Best LB, Best S/Nickel, 2nd best TE, very successful draft positional value be damned
I think this a much better grading system then most places use. In the 5th round, you’re really really just taking a gamble. If you need to improve a position group, taking a few day three guys at that position is the best bet. Reflecting that in you grades it good.
That was the plan!!! I love it.
Ooops, dead wrong! lol
I discovered your channel during this years draft process, and I have to say you’re incredible at what you do. I truly enjoy listening to you talk about these prospects, and it’s clear you know your stuff when it comes to these prospects. I can’t wait for your video about the Steelers!
I discovered him during the Covid lockdowns. I always feel better informed after watching one of his shows.

Thanks guys!
Shoutout to you Marcus, this draft season has been incredible this year. I literally had zero time to do my own evaluations so your draft content both on here and Patreon has been a huge help. Excited for the Colts grades especially.
The colts did exceptional
Colts killed it
Recently started watching your channel and I didn’t realize how fun the draft process can be!
The (assumed) Top-QBs the Lions could have realisticly drafted since Brad Holmes took over were:
Zach Wilson
Trey Lance
Justin Fiels
Mac Jones
Kenny Pickett
Malik Willis
Desmond Ridder
Sam Howl
Anthony Richardson
Will Levis
None of these guys have hit (yet) and even if you argue that we've seen enough of Fields to label him as a hit and project Richardson to hit as well - that's still only a hit-rate of 20%.
Its a very apt analogy that will go over MANY peoples heads.
exactly!!! the higher you take a player relative to price, the more you need it to work. it’s just willingly throwing away value
Marcus here’s something Dexter said in regards to his get off in his draft interview. Apparently he was taught to use a watch and mirror technique. I think that makes his tape a lot better!
Man the greenbay Clifford segment had me in stitches LMAO
absolutely loved all the draft streams. thanks for all the analysis you do, i cant wait to watch all these too!
That's an A
The weirdest thing about Darnell Wright is that this staff didn't love Tevin Jenkins then drafted a Tevin Jenkins type.
well they didn’t wanna pay roquan and then paid another LB big money.
Jenkins has some potentially severe injury issues. Seems like they question either his love for ball or his HIITS devotion
Lions had the draft of all time. Maybe even a tragic comedy.
Update: I don't know ball and I love Sam Laporta ;-;
That Sean Clifford rant was hilarious
Huge fan of NFC north being first. Great work as always Marcus. Go vikes
Just fyi
Same w/ Benton fr Wisconsin!! Now, the Steelers will benefit from his unshackled play!

My favorite series on TH-cam is back
I love unhinged Marcus lmao. Love the content brother.
Hes not the guy
one thing about the bears draft. ALL of their picks had an 8+ RAS. Poles loves developmental athletes
Terell smith pick by the bears was amazing. Hes a beast i watched every game of his career definitely can see him as a regular contributor by year 2
Yip, I worry the Vikes whiffed on that one, but they did have him in for a visit, so maybe that didn't go well.
Any udfa videos? Vikings got some good ones that made it in your rankings. Some of their UDFA’s were certified steals in my opinion
Huh!? All the best players were sitting right there.
good points
They replaced him with Cam Sutton, Emmanuel Mosley
Dude you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about and clearly don’t know the lions roster situation or its players lmao
Notifaction squad!! Been waiting all day to hear your takes on this crop of drafted players
#ONEPRIDE🦁💯
“Sean Clifford is fucking terrible” had me rolling 😂
Can’t wait to see the NFC East/ AFC East draft reviews!
as a lions fan i agree with your grade i hate the gibbs pick at 12 if we got him in round 2 i would like it i would of rather wanted Christian Gonzalez with that pick. we had one of the worst defenses in the league and we go Gibbs like our o line was so good it made Jamal Williams look better than he really was so monty was gonna do fine. this draft class looks a million times better if we had christian instead of gibbs
This video is hilarious for the Lions now.
Couldn't agree more
I think Gibbs over Gonzalez was the only head-scratcher for the Lions. They picked up a lot talent.
Yeah my biggest problem with the Vikings 1st pick was that they needed a Corner way more than a WR2. Banks would have been a homerun.
Wr was a bigger need. If jj ever gets hurt the vikings season is over
This did not age well
If Hendon Hooker is probably a Jared Goff like ceiling and Jared Goff nearly got them to the playoffs (allowed them to over-acheive or break out in the first place) than... sounds like a good 3rd round pick to me. The problem with the Lions' draft is the ABSOLUTE wiffs they had in the first round and 3rd pick in the 2nd! But I see no problem with Hendon Hooker. Your undervaluing Goff imo.
Been here since year 1 and your videos get better so significantly per year. Keep up the great work
i really like your new grades setup keep up your good work marcus!
Nice to see the Lions won the draft
Vikings picked up Pace Jr and Carter II, mid-round talents.. great pickups.
not mid round talents
@@Meatz32 They have the talent to have gone early day 3 at least. No clue why they fell so hard
@@Meatz32 Carter definitely is, just needs the NFL strength and conditioning. Pace is definitely talented, just short.
@@robe2504 carter needs both physical development and football development. likely wont touch the field at all year one if he makes the team
@@Meatz32 Yip, so he is a football talent then?

@@Booster45 You're a rarity. Wishing y'all well though, some very loyal fans who deserve success and something to feel good about.
@@zackhurwitz9441 thanks man! Yeh I don't wanna be too optimistic but really think we can compete for the North this year which would be insane!
@@Booster45 Hendon Hooker isn't a proper year 1 backup at all. Its going to take at least a full year before he learns NFL verbiage and concepts, because almost nothing from the Tennessee offense will translate to the pros.
I work as an electrician and listen to football podcasts all day, the only football content I save for when I’m home is yours so I can really take it in, it’s funny cause I’ve done that through all my jobs the last 4 years, keep it up TFG !🐐 fr
That's so kind, thank you!
As always, I enjoyed the content and the draft day streams! Thank you 🤘
Let me start by saying love your content!
So I'm wondering if the Lions' logic for those picks is: "we're not planning on resigning Swift or Goff to long-term deals, so let's sign equivalent players who will give us similar production, but will be cheaper in the long-run because they'll be on rookie deals."
Even so, that doesn't justify taking those players in the positions that they did. But then again, IIFC, there was a run on RBs early in the draft. Maybe they knew that was coming, and decided to take a top RB while they could?
I appreciate the honesty and the hard work you put in. Skol... er... I mean, Cheers!
Wasnt it clear when ur favorite team has Sean Clifford come to GB for a visit that he was probably the future backup QB. Like how is this a shocker even if u think the player isnt draftable.
Us Lions fans were there. We scratched our heads too. No need to berate the point. 1st day was a disaster.
Go pack go. So excited to see some new young juice on the field finally.
For the Vikings;
Coaches could have genuinely not believed in Will Levis to be a +starter in the NFL, they spent a lot of time scouting him so I'd have to think that's the case.
The Hendon Hooker pick reminds me of when the Vikings picked Kellen Mond
On behalf of a huge section of Vikes fans would like to thank the Lions for drafting Hooker.
Lions with the Gruden Raiders esque draft
LaPorta is showing better than Mayer so far. Better route runner and solid blocker.
I dont watch college so i have no clue who these players are until they start getting mocked and picked so its always nice to hear peoples grades on them that do the research
Poles emphasized length when taking about prospects
i liked every packers pick aside Clifford and the Kicker. the kicker has been injured and really not impressive numbers as a kicker. might need crosby back and let him develop a year. ive also been pushing GB to draft Dubose, I think he has the tools to be a very good 3rd WR. A James Jones type role for this team. I also think Reed and Wicks have hidden talent because their lack of a good QB. Love what they did with the Dline and its very obvious theyre rebuilding because everyone they drafted is pretty raw and need 2 years to develop at least.
All the packers ever do is pick players who need 2 years to develop. Then when they don't develop nobody cares cause it's been 2 years already.
This aged like goat milk
As a Lions fan, I agree we should have got more. Gibbs and Campbell will be good, but especially Gibbs pick we could have done better.
Brad turned to Matt millen
How could the Gibbs pick be any better??
How could the Gibbs pick been better?
@William Smalley It's not the who, it's the where.
@@BigWill219 by taking him in the 3rd round
Nah i was out on Levis, his "high upside" is literally Kirk Cousins/Stafford. I wouldve loved Richardson tho, sadly he didnt fall far enough
stafford has always been better than cousins
Holmes is amazing
Edit: it keeps getting worse. Hooker was always solely a backup dude. He was never going to be the starter dude
Can’t wait to see next years video about how wrong you were on Dontayvion Wicks lol.
When he started talking shit about Wicks I was I can't wait for next years vid
What if the lions use gibbs in a hybrid role? Like a percy harvin or deebo. I feel like thats the one way they can gain value on the pick
They're going to use him like Deebo forsure, he led Alabama in receiving and rushing.
Glad the Vikings didnt draft Levis.
I mean thats fine but i promise he wasn't their #1 guy. And if he was, you should be worried because Parris is just a different animal.
What do you think about Ivan Pace to the Vikings as a UDFA? I know that you had a draftable grade for him and the ILB room there isn't crazy.
The Packers have said they're going to play Wooden on the interior
the problem with looking at picks through the lens of positional value is that positional value only applies based on how you predict that position will be used. rbs aren't valued because teams don't run the ball but when they did run it rbs were top value. the point is you don't know how the team will utilize the player. if you think of gibbs as a wr and they utilize him as one then I bet your grade is a little different. i think that's how the lions see him as well.
also if you think campbell is stiff as a board you aren't paying attention.
Bears and packers had solid drafts , Detroit with two first totally dropped the 🏈
the lions could have had one of the greatest drafts ever from a surplus value perspective if they had taken carter, traded up for gonzales and then traded up for Levis. woow
Detroit will for sure have an incredible offense again, but they could have capitalized on all the incredible defensive talent in this draft and genuinely have a chance to make a superbowl push imo
Yep that's the problem
That's hard from 2nd in the division. Addison is already a year and a half ahead of Jameson.
