Fat man on a bicycle in Littlehampton, UK

  • I've bought a bicycle! Am I crazy? I'm an overweight (fat, obese, plump, large boned, whatever you like to call it) guy in my mid 50s and in my never-ending quest to lose weight, have taken the plunge and decided to show my fatness off to everyone in West Sussex as I ride around.
As I live around Littlehampton and I'm incapable of riding more than a few metres, I'm restricted with my exploring to local kerbs, road bumps and grass verges. For example, there's a lovely seafront promenade near me that's got a beautiful red pattern on it, otherwise known as my blood when I fell last week. Yes, I fell.
"Were you knocked off, Mr ExploreWithGeoff?", I hear you cry.
Nope, I just fell. Ya know, like.....toppled over for no apparent reason. The good thing is that my blubber saved my bike as it fell on top of me.

Hey, glad to see you back....you've been missed! Excellent purchase, the bicycle. Glad you got "back up on the horse" after your crash. Good luck in your endeavors, and keep us updated!

Thanks mate, I appreciate it a lot. I'm still nervous cycling and try to avoid busy roads - Or roads at all if possible! I can't wait to go on much longer rides when my body can cope with it.

I enjoy the filming as you ride. Nice to see the sunrise too.

No pain no gain (whoever said that needs a slap). You're doing so well considering your self confidence is low and you've hurt yourself. Keep going and before you know it, you will be able to cycle to Cheshire 🙂

Thanks Lotty! Why Cheshire? Do you know someone amazing who lives there? Oh I know who you're talking about - It must be Syd. Yea he's worth cycling to Cheshire for.

Saddles will all be trial and error, once you know your sit bone width. Figure that out, super simple. Then add 30-40 mm. So if ur sit bones are 110mm apart, you’d want a saddle with a width of 140-150mm. That’s just the start of finding a saddle unfortunately lol. Position position position of saddle is also huge. Hope this helps ur bum lol

Thanks for the tips. I do feel better in the saddle since starting to ride, so maybe I'm getting used to it. I have also made an effort to adjust the height/position/angle the best I can. My main problem now is my legs and knees. I may still get another saddle, but I'll have to add that to the long list of extra bits I need. It's getting expensive! :)
