    In those days, 'NONE', U.S. network prime-time schedules began at 7:30pm(et) instead of 8 [as it does now]. NBC scheduled "DANIEL BOONE" at 7:30pm on Thursdays, and they figured "STAR TREK" would be a good "fit" for those looking for more "action/adventure" at 8:30. Of course, they moved it to Fridays at 8:30pm in the fall of '67 because they thought "TARZAN" was an even "better fit". Leave it to Raymond Burr's "IRONSIDE" to flouish at 8:30 on Thursdays for the next four seasons...

    The opening at 3:13, 'Raven', was for a special edition of "NBC TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES" on October 24, 1967, which began at 7:30pm(et) that evening; which is why "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" and "THE JERRY LEWIS SHOW" were pre-empted. After 3:43, they switched to a montage of footage from "A Hard Day's Night", as an announcer trumpted the television "World Premiere" of the film...

    Did Fred Collins (who V/O'd the "Star Trek" series premiere as well as the ad spotlighting the making of a Perry Como special) ever do any local booth work for WNBC-TV in New York, and if so, in what time shift? I also recognized the voices of Mel Brandt, Wayne Howell, Bill Wendell and Bill Hanrahan - but noticed no promos voiced by Vic Roby or Howard Reig.

    Star Trek starting at 8.30 Eastern was obviously the 2nd or 3rd show of that evening due to the earlier start times of 7.30.

    The animated Beatles bit at the end looks like the work of Randall Enos. He did some other NBC promos. He later worked for National Lampoon where he did a Beatles spoof "Magical Misery Tour".

    I love how you see all sorts of ads bragging about how NBC is in color, and then, at the very end, they play a movie that's in black-and-white.

    @2007skaterpunk - However, in its first twelve months in Burbank, "The Tonight Show" made two return visits to New York, in November 1972 and May 1973. The last of those visits spawned the bit where drummer Buddy Rich demonstrated his karate skills; and another bit with a foot reader.

    the "tonight show" started out in new york city from 1954 to 1972. in may 1972, according to "wikipedia" the show moved to burbank, calif. (just outside los angeles).

    Has anyone else noticed the (very primitive) similarity between the Tonight Show intro at 2:30 in this video, and the current intro for Late Night with Conan O'Brien - right down to the panning right, Rockefeller Center landmarks, etc?

    Why was Star Trek on at 8.30 Thursday - I always thought US Nets started their hourlong shows on the hour (eg: 8pm, 9pm) 8.30 is a common start time here in Australia where everyone starts on the half hour, but the Original Star Trek is the only example I've ever seen of this in America - anyone have the answer for me?

    The penguin is made of win and win! Considering that NBC was *THE* colour network, I guess going back to black and white for a "special program" was a real let-down. Still, it shows NBC had a sense of humour about it.

    @PeteRFNY 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    LOL - the penguin ID aired only ONCE - when NBC premiered "A Hard Day's Night" on a special Tuesday Night Movie (hence, the Beatles at the end)!

    jeffbob4343, would it have been better if "star trek" remained on thursdays for season 3 or kept the series on fridays throughout its run?

    @PlaneAndTVtechfan notice "part" of the reason. They kept giving Rodenburry crap from day one. Fred Frieberger took over creative control in the 3rd season and kept allowing lame screenwriting & plots. They were on a extremely unfair paltry budget all the way through (at least compare to other shows at the time). Which by the way was amazing how they were able to work around it. However, I speculate that there was a vicious "unsilent minority" among network executives that just didn't like it.

    I mistook that "If it's really special it's on NBC" as something from CBS in 1972. This is not scanimation (that didn't come until later) and the music may include analog synthesizers. That ident probably dates from 1965.

    So thats why the Beatles appear! A Hard Days Night is both a Beatles song and movie. I'm a fan of the Beatles.

    Now I can understand part of the reason why Star Treks original series did'nt do so well. That was thee most shitfull televised network promotion I have ever seen-period ...

    NBC was founded in 1926 by David Sarnoff. It was first owned by RCA, GE, and Westinghouse Corporations. Happy 81st Birthday NBC!!

    The "TONIGHT SHOW" opening is from 1968; the partial "TONIGHT" promo was from '67. The "HUNTLEY-BRINKLEY REPORT" opening title [with Bill Hanrahan as announcer] was used between 1965 and '68 (with sponsor I.D. added live during the broadcast). The special "TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES" opening sequence {with penguin and Beatle caricatures} was seen only once, on October 24, 1967.

      I believe "I Dream of Jeannie" was, in its first season (in 1965), black and white, but had gone to color the next season.

    Just amazing...great quality, looks like it's right from the original 16MM! Thanks for posting this! And yes, the Tonight Show moved permanently to Burbank in 1972, however, there were a few times he did the show from there during his New York run.

  • @wmbrown6
    @wmbrown6 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @StooGP - In contrast to only two times (November 1972 and May 1973) when Carson did a few weeks in New York after moving permanently to Burbank.

    Years ago, it was common for prime time shows to start at 7.30 Eastern/Pacific, 6.30 Central time..some years later (I want to say around the early to mid 70s), the FCC ruled that that 30 minute block should be given back to the affiliates throughout the US to be used locally as 'family programming' or something like that...that's when the times for network programming were moved back 30 minutes to 8 PM Eastern/Pacific and 7 PM Central where they still remain today.
