I didn't quite understand until the $20 guy said it sucked & the $1 gal said she'd do it again. *aha!*
Very interesting. Also, I was curious about inflation (for the sake of perspective) so I looked it up. In 1957, $1 = appx $9 & $20 = appx $170.

“Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn't fit in with the core belief.”

That is NOT cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance only refers to conflicting beliefs about oneself. Evidence to the contrary about things outside oneself is another social psychology theory- either belief perseverance (refusing to change beliefs even when disconfirming evidence exists) and or confirmation bias ( tending to look for and interpret and remember information according to one's own beliefs) This is a common misconception about what cognitive dissonance is.

SlypherSpoons Good one! Congnative dissonance is central in racism it occurs when your behavior is in contridict to what you hold to be true. Consider, how do you reconcile the European or so called civilizers behaving in such a barbaric way toward the many brown and black people globally for example? This is actually at its very core a huge component of racism, humans don't function well under these circumstances and dissonance must be removed. Thus you have things like the 3/5 compromise reducing blacks to 3/5ths of a human, or sanctioning the rape of enslaved individual because quote "their sex is promiscuous and in turn they are unable to be raped." Or in contemporary society convincing yourself blacks behave differently from other races, are more violent and are less desirable to be around. both are attempting to remove the dissonance by creating a reality where the behavior is justified. of course I am black so I'm entering this conversation on a different level then you I assume.

The transfer of information between neurons becomes optimal when their activity is synchronized. This is the same reason why we experience cognitive dissonance, the frustration caused by simultaneously holding two contradictory ideas.
Will is merely the drive to reduce dissonance between each of our active neural circuits.

I think it's part of adaptive human behavior. CD is an observation, or finding in that humans can adapt to survive in almost any situation. Even if its against their long term survival..people can change their belief as much and as long as they can presume they will have to endure the dissonance, But changing the behavior is what is required to alleviate the dissonance, which usually requires more effort from the individual, and usually why they change their belief instead.

Also reminds me of "post hoc rationalization" - while there may be some doubts in the beginning, every decision or choice immediately seems better and justified as soon as it is selected. Works especially great in social settings where noone wants to be a dummy who made a mistake or just behaved inconsistently.

Because 1 dollar wasn't really "worth" lying, they felt their actions didn't match their behavior, and therefore they decreased their cognitive dissonance subconsciously by legitimately convincing themselves it was enjoyable.
The 20 dollar group felt lying for 20 dollars was worth it, so their actions matched their behaviors, and therefore they didn't feel any dissonance and as a result did not convince themselves the task was enjoyable.
      Hopefully that helps.

They've been convinced that it's the best thing in the world, by other parents who feel dissonance between their expectations and reality, so they convince themselves that they're happy. About "The Fox and the Grapes" by Aesop...
One hot summer's day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch. "Just the thing to quench my thirst," quoth he. Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success. Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: "I am sure they are sour."
It is easy to despise what you cannot get.
What I wanted was to die among strangers, untroubled, beneath a cloudless sky. And yet my desire differed from the sentiments of that ancient Greek who wanted to die under the brilliant sun. What I wanted was some natural, spontaneous suicide. I wanted a death like that of a fox, not yet well versed in cunning, that walks carelessly along a mountain path and is shot by a hunter because of its own stupidity…
Because Cognitive Dissonance is an illusion.

There are so many ways to "slice it" as they say, that it's practically worthless as any kind of axiom or core principal of psychology.
If I were managing a Sales Force I'd simply see it as an indicator of who has the potential to be the most engaging and convincing sales person whether they have any personal interest in a given product, or not.

Hi, my English is not perfect but I hope my explanation will be good enough. The subject, who is paid 1 dollar has not a reason to back up his behaviour, whereas the other says to himself:"well, they paid me 20 bucks this justifies my behaviour". The orher one thinks:"they paid me 1 dollar, so I'm doing this shit for one dollar, what the fuck? If I'm doing it it means that the experience was not that bad". When there is a cognitive dissonance either you change your behaviour to fit your beliefs or you change your beliefs to fit your behaviours. Get it now? :)

    • @Enjakk
      @Enjakk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks guys. Recently I learned that the subject could change attitude also if the reinforcement is very high, for example here 50 dollars.
There is one experience where the subjects have to try 6 bitter solutions for 1 dollar. At the end of the the experience we ask if the subjects want to try 18 bitter solutions for:
      - 1 dollar
      - 3 dollars
      - 5 dollars
For the 1 dollar condition and the 5 dollars condition there is a change in terms of attitude, whereas for the 3 dollars there is not a change, meaning they say "we didn't like the experience". This to say that people change attitudes depending on the reinforcement. If the reinforcement is not enough or more than usual there is a change in attitude.

    • @Enjakk
      @Enjakk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

for 6 bitter solutions they were paid one dollar, for 18 bitter solutions (6x3=18) they would expect 3 dollars (1x3=3), they compare how much money they get in the second experience according to the first one.

So she says "it's fun" witch is a suggestion on herself that will enforce her behavior next time similar occasion happens and feel like she likes it because her selfsuggestion. Just my own theory

I'm not certain your intended concept regarding the "Bribe", but in case this is a suobject you are studying, I'm going to offer a bit more clarity on the subject.
Bribe is a separate subject from Cognitive Dissonance. One could literally suffer Cognitive Dissonance as a result of the Bribe.
The subject is further separated by those whom are bothered by the ethics challenges for accepting a bribe, others lack a large enough guilt factor to cause them any Cognitive Dissonance.
The variance of remorse, guilt, fear, anxiety, etc will vary by personality from those whom simply will not accept a bribe, those whom do but suffer as a result, those whom make the decision based on the level of the task (wouldn't take a bribe for an act that causes pain or harm, but would If it were marginal untruths to get a sale), *and then there's the individual that's a diagnosable Narcissist Personality Disorder, (Note: a variance will run in different Diagnosed NPD's from some signs of the variables to no measurable signs and intermittent values where some subjects have some response and others do not). The NPD Individual will be observed as having little to no feelings of guilt, responsibility for self actions, they are void of empathy, sympathy, and absent in emotions of love and respect for other humans and animals.
The later could be seen to suffer Cognitive Dissonance in specific cases, such as:
Example: growing up to believe in their Learned Reality that Humans are the only Human-type species in the Universe and then come to a time when the Government Discloses there are other InterStellar Beings living in an exchange on Earth.
Or the taught history gains an update and rather than a mere 7,000 - 15,000 years of Human Civilizations, it is more accurately updated and it's identified that the Earth has had several Chapters of Civilizations dating back some 200M years and 5 Advanced Civilizations that were impacted by catastrophes and each had to redevelop from scratch +/-.
These situations would affect masses with Cognitive Dissonance, including those with strong Personality Disorders.
(You can trust my descriptions" I'm a long time Grad with Research Experience and degrees in Sociology with focus in Social-Psychology, Journalism, and History.)

So why didn’t they film the original experiment? It’s odd that they really recreated this. The acting is horrible. And it doesn’t really create a clear experiment outcome (IMO) cause it’s so staged. They should’ve just secretly recorded the OG experiment & asked the participants after if their video could be used.

Not quite the same. Cognitive dissonance is the conflict of 2 opposing thoughts, usually leading to the preexisting thought prevailing over the other more recent thought, due to some justification on the part of the subject. In doublethink, there is no such conflict, so 2 conflicting thoughts can 'peacefully' coexist in the subject's mind.

I fell in love with the sound of Whales, when I was a very young (other side of todler) little girl. The Old Harbour Museum in Hermanus was home to a fascinating Whale Section.
The great big beautiful highlight for me, and a memory that would become forever imprinted deep within me, was reaching way up, to press the Whale Sound Button on the wall.
    And "REPEAT" :).
Listening to these gentle giants speak, with their voices travelling so clearly, so far underwater, was like a pure miracle to me.
And I recall the overwhelming sense of connection to the WONDER (of LIFE) I FELT.
Ears pitched, as if it was yesterday.
It breaks my heart that so many of these beautiful beings are dying off in their numbers.
And at a FAR MORE ALARMING rate than you have been told.
    ALL AROUND THE GLOBE.
What really gets me down (& in truth, slightly infuriated) is that SO MANY HUMANS, who know the EXACT TRUTH about, and REAL KEY REASON** behind these rapid die offs (and washing up of whales on our beaches), CHOOSE TO REMAIN SILENT.
Even more saddening, is that these real KEY reason(s) are in fact HIDDEN from the public, by those very individuals & (so called environmental) organisations, who have taken on the OFFICIAL ROLE OF PROTECTING NATURE & MARINE LIFE (& nogals earns a pay cheque for said "ROLE").
    WHY?
Because the (global big spOIL owned) GOVERNMENT, WHO ARE THE ONES DOING ALL THIS DAMAGE, SAID SO.
I trust and pray you can hear my plea.

8 years ago I was introduced to the notion of cd. But just now I actually am beginning to understand the damn process. The more I get it, the clearer the bullshit cloud around us becomes. The other title of this vid, should be: Why and how we bullshit other people, beginning with our selves? ez to remember: "cd is bs"
Cd is a discomfort. If you feel it, it is not nice, but it also means that something is not fine in yr life. If you feel fine, then maybe everything is fine in your life. But if it isn't fine, but you feel fine, it has to mean that you are lying to yourself. And the bullshit, just helps you to cope. But the truth is still there.

She just told the guy she enjoyed the experiment but when asked if she would do it again her real opinion, of it being a dull and tedious game, pops up and wanted to overrule the lie. In the end she still went with the lie even though you could feel she wouldn't enjoy doing that.
