    I am physically a mountain rider. My weakness is the flat surface, which is why I opted for the 50mm Syncros Capital 1.0 disc wheels for my Scott Addict RC. And it feels so much better to drive in the area. And since there were aluminum wheels before, it now feels much stiffer and more aggressive in the mountains with the carbon wheels. I love it.

    In general, aero is always more important than weight, despite the single use case where you climb up a hill and stop right at the top. As soon as you go back down the aero advantage will make up for the slight weight penalty.
    For the cross-wind topic:it comes down much more to the shape of the dish than the depth. If you are riding a modern designed shape it is as efficient in cross-winds for 65mm as for older 35mms...

      @@GCPerformance18 why do people say this. I’m 6ft2” and 260lbs try riding into a headwind up a hill. Weight and aero counts. It’s the weight that slows you down the most.I’m a aero fan. • @yannickokpara4861
      @yannickokpara4861 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OFFSHOREDOUG That's just not true. This has been studied. Aero trumps weight at light to moderate inclines(up to something like 6-7%) even at lower speeds like 15km/h, which... idk... maybe that is 250w?

    • @yannickokpara4861
      @yannickokpara4861 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That you weigh 260 just means you have more weight fighting against you. It does not mean that weight itself becomes more important as a factor

    • @yannickokpara4861
      @yannickokpara4861 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you fix the speed then 100grams weight is equal to about 1 watt difference. The effect of weight through gravity is actually linear. However! if you are lighter then you will at the same wattage go faster for the same watts, so actually it can in that sense become more important for a lighter rider(if strong enough) to focus a bit more on improving aero on the hills compared to weight.

    I have almost a dozen wheelsets of varying sizes.
    I often run my goto wheelset of dura ace c50s, but will find them on a fast downhill, especially on foothill/mountain roads the ever changing wind direction do make it challenging, especially at 35 mph decents. I’ve never lost control but have had a shot of adrenaline when a gust put me in a different lane or messed up an apex on a turn.
    That said I have some Carbon 24s and they just feel light but slow.
    My favorites are that 35-45 size, which is a good compromise. If you live in a flat area you may be able to get away larger as a primary wheelset.

    I got some dt swiss wheels in 62mm. Was worried about crosswinds at first but it is exactly as you‘re saying. Modern rim shapes are very good at dealing with crosswinds and the difference to a regular 20-30mm shallow rim isn‘t very noticeable. The deepest wheels I had were 55. They were great but like you, living near the beach we'd get some pretty strong crosswinds. I was never really scared of being blown off my bike but a deeper dish wheel became less efficient in the crosswind because you have to make constant micro-adjustments for the wind taking you off your line a bit. Normally on windier days I'd go to a 32. I ended finding I could still maintain my speed whilst cutting the weight. Now I ride anything from a 37 to 45 and seems like it makes the best all-around wheel. Something like the Zipp 303 or 404 and the Enve 4.5 give you the best of both worlds while still looking great. Wheels are the best upgrade to feel an immediate impact on your riding and the best investment to put into your bike as you can take them and use them on your next bike too.

    I just got my first set of CF wheels for my Cannondale SuperSixEvo - I ended up getting Vision Metron 40’s and I gota say I’m loving them. I can definitely feel them more in the crosswinds (as compared to my super basic, shallow, aluminum wheel) , and as a relatively new rider with still new rider bike handling skills I’m glad I didn’t get 50’s or 60’s. Eventually, as I get more experienced I’ll likely get deeper wheels but for now my Metron 40’s are sweeeeet

    A few months ago, I purchased some 60mm deep wheels. I was looking for 40 to 50 mm. I really like the wheels and they are light for their depth. I just think they look kind of weird on a climbing bike which is a 2018 Cannondale SuperSix High Mod. I got them because I thought they were cool and my big brother talked me into it some as well. He thinks they look cool and I think they look weird. I think they would look better on an aero bike. My bike came with shallow climbing wheels. I do live in central N. Carolina, so we have rolling hills. The deeper wheels is actually pretty good for around here. My old bike, a 2013 SuperSix, had 50 mm deep wheels and I thought they were great.

    what about aluminium wheels with deep rims? I can see they weigh more, like 2500 grams, but the ones I look at now are 60 mm rims and for 170 euro and made for Fixed gear with is what I ride.... but they will be heavier than keeping normal shallow rims of course... how much will the added 2500 grams disturb my riding, both the speed, and my endurance... or will the weight of deep rim wheel sets not matter much as their benefit to handle the wind better gives more efficiency to the whole riding experience than their added weight to the bike? I am pretty new to all these aero dynamic calculations... so please help me understand better if is worth for me to start with these deep rim wheels in aluminium , so please let me know if is worth to add the wheels of 170 euro to my fixed gear aluminium bike as it will add more weight if I choose the 60 mm rims! thanks for a fun and educational video!

This one road you have to take 50% of the time is a pure cross wind and I'm blown all over the place but I am aware of it and slow down and be ready. It's prob more my body, I'm 6'2 200 so there is a lot of area for the wind to hit. More worried about the price then the wind 😂🤙

    Hmmm, come to SoCal and ride in the mtns with deep wheels....crosswinds is definitely a real issue, esp. when the Santa Ana's kick up. Keep in mind that riding deep wheels on pan flat terrain can be quite different compared to riding in undulating/exposed/hilly/canyons/mountainous terrain. Also, carbon wheels don't "hold speed" - my legs hold speed, but the wheels don't.

    I ended up pulling the trigger on some Yoeleo carbon wheels. After doing quite a bit of research and asking questions to those that ride them. They are on par with the quality of carbon wheels from Hunt or CRC’s Prime brand (which I understand both are just rebranded Chinese rims anyway) and have a UCI certification which gave me some extra piece of mind in regards to safety. The wheels are 50mm and toroidal/u-shaped which I understand are much better than v-shaped in regards to crosswinds. At a featherweight 125lbs I can confirm the the 50mm have not been an issue when riding in 35mph crosswinds, as long as I’m focused and have my hands on the controls. A pair of Zipps or Enve’s may be marginally faster and more aerodynamic but with an added cost of an extra $1000 or so, and it’s not like I’m racing competitively.

  • @filipbronola536
    @filipbronola536 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm the demo works but I don't think it really makes sense. That spinning with your legs tucked is not really comparable to wheels because the rim radius stays relatively equal among all wheels. The whole smaller radius/faster spin thing has to do with the conservation of angular momentum, not acceleration...
    If wheel 'a' is the same mass as wheel 'b', regardless of their profile and disregarding aerodynamic drag, both wheels should accelerate at the same rate given the same amount of energy is driving both wheels.
    I think the whole thing about a shallow wheel being quicker to accelerate comes from the assumption that shallower wheels are generally lighter, but if you have a deep section wheelset that's as light as a shallow section rim, then there should be no difference in acceleration based off of pure power. Maybe you'll accelerate a thousandth fraction of a m/(s^2) more because the shallow wheel MIGHT produce less aerodynamic drag.
    For pro cyclists that have access to the lightest and strongest wheels in the world, making these choices is obvious because the shallow wheelsets will basically always be the lighter choice for them, while the aero ones will be more aero. For normal consumers, you can get a lightweight, aero, deep section wheel, that can outperform some other shallow wheel in any circumstance. There's also shallow wheels that might have better profiles than deep wheels too...

    • @fVNzO
      @fVNzO 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is actually truth to the demonstration. You should watch the videos about rotational weights (and why they kinda don't matter). You put more energy into a heavier wheel which will then in turn conserve more kinetic energy. Assuming both wheels are aerodynamically identical, the wheel with more kinetic energy should spin for longer.
      While aerodynamics and especially braking in the real world negate these benefits most of the time, the demo is not entirely incorrect in assuming the heavier (due to deeper) rim will preserve more momentum.

I'm currently using the Roval CL50s and, like you said, they're great on flats and helping maintain top end speed. But a lot of people are advising that I get shallower wheels for when we do hills reps. 30-40mm is their recommendation. Is that what you would recommend? But even in the pro peloton, it starts to change a little bit. Some climbers sometimes use 50mm deep wheels in the Alps during the Tour de France. To me, it's about the whole course that you intend to ride. If the goal is just to climb the mont Ventoux, you better ride shalower rims. But if there's a few climbs, descents and flat sections, a deep section wheel might be the good choice.

The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
