About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

If you like the marble look but not the marble price, have you taken a look at Stonecoat Countertops & others like them? They're poured epoxy resin, can be made to look like any stone you want it to resemble, but unlike sticky back plastic, withstand temps of 230*C. It has a lot of other great qualities, too, including price.
Beautiful bathroom, I wouldn't cover the counter tops with sticky plastic:( organic gardening ands plastic just don't go together. I would just use what ever you can find second hand.

Love the changes liz and we have just been to Norfolk in a cottage for a week over Christmas and they had that very same towel rail/ radiator and I thought it was lovely. Also love the sliding shower screen. Looking forward to seeing the kitchen after it’s finished and what a great idea for the worktops

Thank you! We didn't do the work (apart from the painting which I'm still doing bit by bit), but I did design the layout and choose the fittings.

I got my cabinets from Habitat for humanity. Really nice ones
We are recycling the cabinets that are already here and I hope to buy different doors and handles (looking for secondhand before I go out and buy brand new).

It looks very nice. Try looking up how to epoxy your counter tops. There are professionals on TH-cam, who shows how to do it (though it's better to watch 20 videos, than just one, to get a feel for the techniques, and perhaps rehearse on a garden table or something). You can give it a marbled look, and it wont scratch, it won't peel and you can put a burning hot pan on it, without leaving a mark.
I'm not sure it's worth it for a room that we'll be using for a short-ish time. I hope to have the kitchen moved within 18 months and imagine that we'll have wooden work tops in the new kitchen.

I envy you ! I love that you recycle and don’t need all the top of the range kitchen stuff, what you cook is the main thing.
Thank you! We really don't need top of the range stuff, as long as it functions it is fine by me! I still use my mother's old hand whisk and bean slicer - I've found nothing on the market that does as good a job!

It really is a pain in the proverbial, but yes, the results are completely worth it!

I got the same marble sticky paper ( contact paper) in my kitchen. Love cleans easy.
It completely changed the feel of the room when I used it on the long run of work surface where the sink is.

How exciting! And what a lovely bathroom! When moving into our home we got someone's kitchen too and designed around it. We were glad to at least already have a working bathroom (albeit ugly, but useable!). Yours is lovely x
Thank you! The kitchen was awful when we first moved in, definitely not a cook's kitchen! We've already made a few changes to the layout and hopefully the next steps will make it a pleasure to use for the foreseeable future until we've saved up enough money to move the kitchen to another room in the house.

It feels very luxurious and yes, it's super comfortable. Baths are long and very relaxing, showers are powerful and invigorating!

@@LizZorab Hi, sadly we have. I'm on the coast near Burry port. I'm trying to make a kitchen garden in an area I've now fenced off from my dogs north facing and hillside in Welsh weather really is going to be challenging. But I'll give it a go.

there is nothing I fear more than a bathroom with glass panel in door
We talked for a long time about this and Mr J felt he didn't want a full glass door (opaque glass) or a half glazed door for safety reasons, but he's happy with this door's smaller panels. Fortunately, this glass is very opaque and you really can't make out someone in the bathroom when you are in the kitchen. Likewise the glass in the window obscures any glances from outside!

It's taking time (and all of our money), but we are slowly turning the house to a comfortable condition.
