    Slapping in a serious fight can be useful, but not on the cheek. You slap someone on the ear.. the air pressure and sound deafen and disorient pretty badly and can even pop your eardrum when done at full force. Try softly slapping yourself on the ear, it's already pretty bad.

    • @dajolaw
      @dajolaw 8 ปีที่แล้ว +122

      +Lindybeige In American football they outlawed the open-hand slap to the side of the helmet long before the current concerns regarding concussions. Even with a helmet, the concussive shock is enough to stun you. Of course, we're talking plastic instead of metal, but I'm guessing in a hotly contested melee a hard slap to the side of your opponent's helmet may just stun him just enough to give you an opening for an attack, escape, or takedown.

    • @BADALEX1
      @BADALEX1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      +Lindybeige The concussive force still remains. You've mentioned that you've done 'Kung Fu' yet from what you've said in this video, open hand techniques are not something you've encountered which seems a little strange.
      An open palmed blow to the side of the head, depending on the practitioner and their training, will do a little bit more than just sting a little.

    The Ottoman slap is basically used for a (very) hard slap nowadays. But there is a myth that Ottoman soldiers (Deliler; translation: crazies/madmen) trained by oiling their hands with olive oil, and slapping marmer. And during war they went there with their burial robe to the front line, expecting to die. It is claimed that these soldiers were so strong, that they could slap a horse down.
    PS: A slap in general can be pretty useful, if you hit someone on their ear for example. It might be even more effective than trying to hit him with your fist. Even in Martial Arts you can rupture someone's eardrum if you slap them very hard.

    Hey Lindybeige, Turk here.
    The problem is not the practicality of a slap or not. The problem is the reality of this legend.
    You see, Ottoman army (they are not Turks by the way) has a lot of legends, because their lack of written material especially compared to Japanese armies.
    But there are some myths that some group of Ottoman Janisseries (called "Crazies"?) were trained by slapping marble stones. Therefore they could kill a man by just a slap (remember Eastern Monk legends, fist of death etc...).
    This also made them crazy strong and swing weapons with incredible strength.
    So you see, "Ottoman slap" is not a real "war strategy" but a "training technique".
    Real or not, I don't know.

    There was a special unit in the Ottoman army named “Deliler”, means “The Crazy Men” (doesn’t translate that well) who’se spesific role was to charge and confuse the enemy. They were unarmed, bald, generally topless and as the name suggests, crazy. They were equipped with tribal like accecories and would yell maniacally while charging. Ofc these units didn’t got used that much cause they can’t really do shit against pikes and spearmen, but when one came close to the opponent they could fracture his cheekbones. Doing this was achieved by aiming the slap in a spesific angle, and slapping with all your might. The broken bone pieces could potentially stab the soldier and inflict an internal wound, potentially even stabbing the brain and killing the target.
    The slap was also used as a last-resort by the soldiers when they dropped their weapon and couldn’t pick it up. Their goal was to stagger the enemy long enough to pick their weapon again, if not to knock them out. The regular infantrymen couldn’t care less about their bones breaking cause it was a life or death situation if you had to use the damn slap anyways.
    Using slaps in battle is a common practice when one’s unarmed and has to keep fighting. This isn’t Ottoman spesific as it was used all around Europe.

    Many martial arts have palm techniques which look on the outside like "slaps". It is an advanced technique, sometimes called the iron palm, sometimes called the "soft" calm. With proper technique this can generate and project a lot of force in a small motion. To make this strike effective takes more skill development and practice than a punch, but once perfected it is not something you want to be hit with.

  • @liamcoe7441
    @liamcoe7441 8 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    Doesn't quite apply to armored battlefield combat, but this is what I know form personal experience about a real slap. In Systema, (Russian combat system) we use slaps frequently, it has a different feel from a punch, more of a lingering hit. The nice thing is that it relaxes the target area very quickly when you do it right, using the natural heavyness of you arm, without tensing too much. We've done drills where we take down the attacker or disarm them using nothing but slaps. Done correctly, it's a hell of a useful technique. It wouldn't do jack against armor, but still, it does have very practical use for unarmored opponents. Love your channel, by the way.

      +Nasmr you'd be supprised. getting slapped stings and combined with the concussive force of the impact from a good slap can stun you for a second, and in a fight that's all you need. stun your opponent for a second and you have an opening to land 2-3 good strikes, or to tangle them up with a lock.
      though word of advice it only works once, and best as the opening move before the adrenalin kicks in, afterwards it works about as well as you can expect.
      that said if the fight isn't actually serious a good slap can sometimes defuse the situation (as with your friend) but other times it can make it much worse, it's one of those things you have to judge (unless you plan to follow it up with something more serious)

    While playing (amateur) American Football, some Linemen (the big guys) would sometimes do what you call in the video an Ottoman slap (to try to dislodge, or maybe provoke you). I don't know if it's on account of modern helmets, but other then a fraction of a second of disorientation, because the head will unexpectedly move for about a third of a meter if it's a big guy hitting hard, I haven't felt any effects other then some outrage (and anger).
    So probably helmet slapping - Ottoman style - wouldn't be that effective as a combat fighting technique.

    One note about padded/boxing gloves.
    You said “even” in those gloves, implying that boxing gloves aren’t as impactful as fists, but from what I’ve seen in research they don’t actually reduce the effectiveness of your punches, they are only there to protect your hand (as you mentioned, punching is an easy way to break something).
    Theoretically, because you can punch harder with less risk of injury, padded/boxing gloves are MORE dangerous than bare fists.

    • @lolic4712
      @lolic4712 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The bigger surface area reduces the risk for the one being punched aswell. Normally the force would be exerted over just the knuckles which are much smaller and therefore have a risk to crack or fracture the opponents skull with the drawback of you breaking your hand

  • @DHTHORNE
    @DHTHORNE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    @lindybeige
    As a martial artist the slap has it's place, but calling a ottman slap/fighting slap a slap is not really fair. The kind of slap most people think of is either the pimp slap, or the backhand bitchslap (sorry ladies! but you know what I'm saying!). Both are fairly limp wrist in nature, and meant to sting rather than injure - you don't want to damage the goods afteral.
    However, as a martial artist even a grappler, strikes have their place, and a proper slap to the ear, eyes, or groin can vary in effectiveness from moderately disorienting, to down right devastating. I proper slap is not limp wristed at all, it's basically a sideways palm heel strike, or if aimed at the ear, more of a cupped strike.
    The ear clap strike CAN MAIM. It can burst eardrums, you can carefully test this just by cupping your hand and gentle clapping your hand over your ear (very very gently at first), if you get even the slightest air seal the air pressure combined with the impact can ruin your whole day. So be very careful.
    If you miss the ear but get close, there are a lot of nerves on the side of the head behind the jaw, people get knocked out from being hit there with moderate force ALL the time.
    If you miss that, there is still the temple, and while a knuckle worked better, a palm heel strike to a temple can be lethal.
    A full power strike like these could be lights out if it lands. The problem with ANY head based strike is landing it.
    It takes training to hit even a stationary target accurately, to do it to one that is moving and trying to dodge you or bock you is hard or even impossible. Remember, there are people who train all day NOT to get hit just like you might train all day TO hit.
    This is why when push comes to shove, most toe to toe brawls go to the floor with people grappling.
    But if you watch close, most real fights start with some kind of surprise punch, sometimes it's a slap, not a bitch slap, but an open hand strike. An ottoman slap, sideways palm heel, tiger strike, whatever. Even untrained, it's devastating. Usually (I'd say 8 out of 10 times) the guy who hits first (including palm heel/ottoman slaps) wins the fight.
    I see it all the time in the security footage I watch to supplement my training. Hope this helps your perspective a bit more!

      I also view women as equals, if a woman or man attacks me, I'm not going to do whatever it takes to end the violence as quickly and reliably as possible.

    Late to comment, but slaps are effective. But as a means to an end. You slap to not hurt but position the head., So a left palm to the face "slap" slightly downwards and a follow up with a right uppercut to finish. A punch is small contact to deal massive damage. A "slap" or open palm push is wide spread and can manipulate the head to quickly follow with the actual attack.. Granted this is bare fighting with no weapons or armor.

  • @SuperRichyrich11
    @SuperRichyrich11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    thats called a palm strike... or something similar. In palm strikes you concentrate the force into the small bone int he bottom of your palm, which is one of the most rugged bones in the body. The result, is a strike that is IMMENSELY more devastating than a punch.
    Martial arts masters across a variety of diciplines advocate open hand strikes (palm strikes) over punches because they are more devastating and far less likely to injure you.
    I use them to devastating effect in street fights... to the point where I pick and choose wisely when I actually punch someone. A single palm strike to the side of the head or face can finish someone bigger than you, and a DOUBLE palm strike (striking linearly in front of you with both palms, putting all your weight behind it) can easily kill someone of your size, or take out someone considerably bigger and stronger than you.
    I used a double to take out this huge brutish rugby player who was about 100 pounds heavier than me.... needless to say, that ruined his night.

    While I agree with Lindybeige about the idea that it was more of an emergency technique to use if you were disarmed, I disagree with the reason why you wouldn't punch. While I agree saving your bones of you hand is a plus, against an opponent with a helmet a slap would be more disorienting. back in the day when rules were less strict in the NFL( yes I know "American" Football isn't battle) the offensive line was aloud to hit the defense, and the first move they would do was a had full body slap to the ear because the shear amount of concussive force would daze the guy if you did it right. I would have to imagine that any warriors who fought with helmets would know this.

    They were actually using this at war as well. Some soldiers who were called “Delibaş” (means ‘Crazy’) would just ride a horse and had an armor but no weapon at all. They were usually at front lines and they could kill people with that slap.
    You didn’t also mention it’s history. Some say that one day some Janissarys tried to close a man’s store because he wasn’t paying taxes and then he went up to Janissary Captain and killed him with a single slap.

    imagine a guy like 1.90 2m tall thats being only feeded with fried pastry working out hard 8 hours a day and half of it is slapping an oiled marble with bare hands that is how to train for ottoman slap
    1. technique is to make the slap hit and completely close the ear and create enough air pressure to give him a bleeding inside ear or even in brain and eventually knock him out pretty bad or mostly kill him due to high pressure
    2. technique is to make the slap hit somewhere between cheeks and neck in order to create enouch force to on there to break the neck
    some records in archives tells that there were people even hitting hard enought to kill a horse with a slap need to find some strong guy to try that but the process is too hard and they will ruin their hands beyond recovery there is no turning back from that much callus

    • @lights8811
      @lights8811 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Your ear canal is directly connected to your pharynx...the most you'd get from "high pressure" generated in outside your earlobe is a ruptured eardrum. (soldiers were being thought to open their mouth when near a cannon, not to cover their ears because the pressure would equalize from both sides of the eardrum)....We live in 2017 now, use more science please and practice more mouth control before speaking.

    First of all, I love your accomplished "slap" sound effect. Well done. It was a joy witnessing your enthusiasm. The Turkish term for what you refer to as an "Ottoman Slap" is "Osmanlı Tokadı". Slap is to Tokat as handgun is to MPT-76. It was a martial art of "last resort" that was well practiced by Ottoman "akıncı" troops, and by Seljuk "Alp" soldiers before them. Most European soldiers/knights had some sort of head protection, but this wouldn't matter in close quarter hand to hand combat. The tokat was so lethal that it produced severe concussions and broken necks. Most knights in shining armor were in "shock and awe" when they were witness to this.

    Watch video
    Try slapping yourself with full force with a slightly stiff arm, if you will
    Now imagine that in the middle of a swordfight
    Imagine an opening where both swords are out of line at morderately close range
    Test punching yourself with the second segment of your fingers as would happen in a longrange hook
    Compare that to the sense of disorientation from the slap
    Now imagine someone who trained with that
    Imagine the sense of disorientation again
    Imagine what can happen at that moment
    Imagine if videomakers on youtube tried to be scientific instead of focusing on singular uninterracted thoughts like slaps don't hurt and weapons are sharp so they win
    Imagine if people did not only that, but began to structure their thoughts into truth
    Imagine what would happen then

    • @haochaotsiminh6193

      Imagine if one has an unsually strong arm
      Imagine if you're a lone warrior fighting an army. Imagine if you're arm is broken. Imagine if his friends are 10 feet tall, with pointy weapons since you seem so much in awe of them to the extent that you think once they enter combat it is impossible to use anything else due to a mindset limited by how effective they are due to a misunderstanding of complexity of situations such as a swordfight which includes many factors among them things other than pointy weapons. Imagine if you didn't have a pointy weapon. Imagine if you had a heart attack. Imagine if none of this ever happened and we were back to a constant situation to evaluate the slap. Imagine if you could have just tagged along from the beginning and didn't have to bring up ludicrious situations to evaluate the slap in the first place. Imagine how much less nonsense the world will be polluted with. Imagine how many faries you have killed with this statement alone.
      Imagine if you used slapping as a close range second rate attack instead of a main method which no one mentioned until you came to deny it or a last resort weaponless technique which isn't as important because you should never get yourself in a situation where you're weaponless against a swordsman in the first place
      Imagine if you didn't use a youtube icon which visually describes what you write to complete the irony of it
      Imagine how much less funny it would be
      Imagine if you did not only that but stopped writing stuff that has equivalent logic to a presidential campaign
      Imagine if you then began to write stuff that makes sense, like children do upon birth except with thought, instead of waging war against logic as if it will kill you if you thought about it

  • @spacewalker8350
    @spacewalker8350 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    An important point that you missed out is that there were specific "slappers" in the Ottoman ranks which were used to intimidate the enemy and were in the frontline for the running ranks, they were big guys who trained by slapping vertical marble slabs coated in olive oil and as they did this they would fragment their palms and fingers bones and let it heal, such constant training made their hands bigger and bulkier and their skin thicker and harder. A slap from these guys actually killed people due to brain concussion/trauma and pressure in their ear. They would slap a good 5-6 men each before drawing their weapons if they were still alive, so this indeed was a real thing and a viable technique which broke the moral of the opposing men, so just please research something fully before making a video about. Such misinformation will spark the anger of a lot of Turks as they are quite nationalist people when it comes to a British guy making a video about something in their culture and won't refrain from looking stupid by trying to write a negative comment by using broken English. I'm half English and half Turkish so I'm just trying to stop them from looking stupid with this long ass comment, but still an entertaining video, much appreciated.

    • @spacewalker8350
      @spacewalker8350 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Kirill P unfortunately the world already has developed a hate for the Turkish community so there are no external sources in English which back this up apart from Turkish sources, so if I were to send you something which proved this you wouldn't be able to read it, so you are in turn right in believing otherwise, but if you were to think logically, having an enemy which could kill your men by slapping them wouldn't you be demoralised? And bear in mind the only empire which were able to conquer Constantinople were the Ottomans. The siege of Constantinople was foretold in the Qur'an by the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) so Constantinople was in the eyes by all of the Islamic community including the Arabs and the Persians but the Ottomans were the ones who fulfilled the prophecy which meant they accomplished the impossible, that's one of the reasons Turkey is bashed today, second reason is being undefeated during ww1 with ill equipped soldiers while advanced nations such as England, Greece and Italy were against them but they won with determination and faith, so of course there isn't going to be external sources in English which backs up the claims about the famous ottoman slap which indeed was very true and Turkey's history is always taught unchanged and in true form only in Turkey.

    • @codmv2
