    I'm Sunderland born and bred, but left 50 years ago for university down south. I still have family in Sunderland and visit as often as I can, however I realise I'm woefully ignorant of the place I still consider home. Although born in Hendon we were brought up with Grangetown and Tunstall as sites to visit. We never ventured to the east end or docks area. Whilst at school a teacher, Austin Pickersgill, introduced us to the local history which I found fascinating but by then I was heading for university and never returned to live in Sunderland. Despite the naysayers Sunderland still has plenty to offer. All towns and cities have undergone change in the last 50 years but look and you'll see what Sunderland has gained and retained. I'd love to walk around my hometown and visit the places I've not seen /or look with new eyes but age has crept up on me and although the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak. Keep the videos coming. It's taken me a long time to find something so precious. Thank you.

    I work in Sunderland and so much of the history isn't celebrated or well known. Thank you for wanting to make me visit and explore more after finding your gem of a channel.

      Thank you for your lovely comment 😊 I think Sunderland definitely is a little underrated and gets a bad reputation, so I'm pleased you can go to work there and see it in a new light!

    Thanks for the great video. I am from central Sunderland. I went to St Mary's school, which now belongs to the university. I lived in a street on the site of the university, which was a stones throw from the metro station.

    Thank you. I so enjoyed seeing this, especially those places familiar to me fifty years ago. I was surprised to see the Londonderry called The Peacock, but there’s one change made for tge best of reasons! Many thanks.

    I well remember the icy water and the coloured elestic bands. I was frequently chucked out for jumping off the veranda into the deep end. And then across the road for a hot saveloy dip.

    My grandad found that clock when they tried to make it disappear. So my family keeps a close eye on it.

      I love the story of Mary Anne Cotton, she's fascinating and would make a fab video for Halloween 😂 I don't do walking tours at the moment but you can use my videos as a virtual guide when walking in town!

    As usual, a great, informative video. Thank you!
    Your mention of the Jewish graveyard got me thinking.
    Coming into town on a Saturday, from East Durham, is see lots of Jews heading to the synagogue.
    It got me thinking, do you have any info on the history of the Jewish population of Sunderland?

    • @northeastnostalgic5071
      @northeastnostalgic5071  ปีที่แล้ว

      There was a huge Jewish population especially in the 1800s, I mentioned one of the synagogue's in my Sunniside but I didn't delve deeper into it as I wasn't sure on pronunciations and also the different variations of the jewish faith. It's something I would like to research more though as I think it would be fascinating 😊

    Thank you for doing this. On the subject of Vaux/Double Maxim/Boer War/ The Maxim Gun: Did you know the Ukrainians are currently using Maxim guns (circa 1917j) defending their homeland against the Russian invaders?

    • @northeastnostalgic5071
      @northeastnostalgic5071  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really didn't know that! That's amazing that something so old is still being used in a modern war!

      @@northeastnostalgic5071 Here a short YT video covering the subject.th-cam.com/video/y4Ynhf6PWIE/w-d-xo.html
      It’s funny that commentators on military matters often dismiss a weapon system saying ‘oh that’s obsolete there is much better available now’ - but in reality the comment itself is obsolete. If you got stabbed in the heart with a WW1 bayonet you would die and a bullet in the head from a Maxim gun will completely ruin your day.

    • @peterswires8439
      @peterswires8439 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another fun fact: the inventor of the Maxim gun, Hiram Maxim, also invented electric curling tongs.

      It does! It's not in the original Vaux name anymore although the new brewery was founded by ex Vaux directors 😊

      Got hold of some a while back and was able to offer some to friends who were well impressed with it.
      They done a good job with it. Even though the water is now from a different source than what was vaux's borehole. Think villa pop had borehole to same water aquifier. Perhaps the magnesium limestone water is part of what made it so much better than other brands?

    How many buildings were just knocked down for no good reason? Blue plaques don't make up for this.
