  • Second or third to last song in a long set at the El Club made mostly of songs from Crow. He played maybe five new ones.
Bonus info: if you look in the bottom left corner at around the 3 minute mark you will see a tree that a kind fan gave Phil to put on stage.
Bonus bonus info: one of the other new songs mentions Phil leaning on Skrillex's bus in Arizona.

A crow that's being dreamed by a child, whose being carried through the forest
Sleeping, wondering in a twilight half-awareness where her mother went.
I know that you died, but in this child's crow dream you survive.
Beneath layers of magical, symbolic wild animals inhabiting the edges of our fogged-over consciousnesses, grasping for something to hold
    Something old
Like a name cut into a stone, or a bird that will make eye contact.
    Thats where you live now,
or at least thats where I hold you.
And we're still here without you, sleeping, and the sun's coming up
In the ruins of our household we wake up again, coming back into this.
Every day that comes, the echo of you living here gets quieter,
obscured by the loud wind of us now.
Wailing and moaning for you - Also living, talking about school, making food
    Just surviving
    and still containing love
Waking up again, the baby that you knew is now a kid
And when she looks at me with your eyes, the shape of almonds
    I'm stirred inside and re-emerge.
I go downstairs and turn on CBC and make some coffee and boil two eggs, make two peices of bread into toast, open the window, and give the child some clothes
and get us sitting at the table
where your chair still sits across from me, watching
I stand up to put on music
Our daughter sees, and asks for mama's record
She's staring at the speakers with a look of recognition, putting it together that that's you singing
I'm sobbing and eating eggs again.
You're a quiet echo on loud wind.
But when I'm trying to, I see you everywhere - in plants and birds and in our daughter
and the air coming down and the sun coming up, and in whatever
and in the myths that used to get told around the fire
where a seal's head pokes up through from underwater
crossing a threshold between two worlds, yours and mine-
    We were skeletally intertwined, once.
But now I just notice ravens instead.
    I don't see you anywhere.

I was at this show. Terribly hard to watch. When he said "this is really fucked up.... but I like it" I was sort of reaffirmed that it was ok to watch as he relived such dark moments.
I didn't know that it was a fan who gave Phil the tree, I guess I thought he just brought it himself. Do you know why they did that??

Nate Blackton Wow man yeah.. It was difficult. I talked to him afterwards and couldn't think of anything to say after such a raw show. I think I said something along the lines of, "that must've really sucked, thanks for being here" or something similar and stupid. Regret..
Yeah, the tree! I saw a couple guys dragging it out from behind a trailer or something in the courtyard area. I can't imagine the reason. I guess Phil sings about trees and wind a lot so they thought it would be appropriate?
It was my first time seeing him even though I've listened to his albums for a long time. It was hard, but also I feel blessed and feel like in a way its helped him process everything, laying it all our there.

Yea I couldn't even think of something to say if I tried ha.
I still imagine Phil had something to do with the tree being there. If I remember correctly I watched the sound guy drag it in and throw it on stage.

I saw Phil play in Toronto with the same tree. Certainly a tough show to sit through. I spoke to him before the show but wasn't able to give my condolences. I felt like he must have heard it enough already. I just tried to make regular conversation as I bought a vinyl.

how can someone make probably the best album of the year and then go on to write songs probably better than any songs on the album in the same year.

In the press release for A Crow Looked at Me, Phil said the songs "came quickly" after Geneviève's death. He probably has tons of them written down, and many of the stories/lyrics seem like they're drawn of memories he's pulled from journals (Phil strikes me as the journaling type). He has been recording and touring intensely since late 2016; maybe he's burying himself in work not only to multiply the voice telling their life's story, but also to try and not spend all of his time grieving.

Did Phil say anything about those new songs being released at some point?

Emmanuel Reymond Not that I remember. I would like that too. We'll see what he does.
