An *eventful* Day in the Life of a Google Software Engineer (NYC Edition)

- 22 year old does coding, gym, dogs, ping pong, nightlife and more. Follow me through my day (and night) as a software engineer in New York City!
DISCLAIMER: While everything in this video did happen on the same day, I had to use alternate footage for a few things like ping pong, because I wasn't able to get permission from everyone that was in the original footage. Something cool though is that the fireworks were from the same night, and it wasn't even July 4th!
Also, this definitely wasn't a typical day, since on most weekdays I just go home after the gym.

OMG you’re amazing
@andrea Jr english
This was really cute
Lived this life on my 20s and it was great. Now I'm 45 and long retired living outside of Boulder, Colorado with no one around for 4 to 5 miles in any direction. I love the peace and quiet now. Enjoy it, because the years go by fast.
I'm 20, tips for retiring in 20 years?
im entering my 30s, never have I experienced this life still studying (software eng) lol, doing mediocre and still not finding that cool college life not sure what I am doing wrong, I have crazy social anxiety tho and no friends haha.
@@owbrianslender5834 hit the gym, do meditation. you will get there in the right mindset
@@dbikerlp9299 get a good job at a FAANG company and make $400,000 a year but save most of it and you can retire by 45 and live a good life
bro beat the game
I’m still waiting for my code…
LMFAO
😂😂
Haha! The code that never came!
OMG you know @owen Luo??
Because, too many late night parties 😛😅
Definitely cherish these days forever. Great to see you work hard and have fun too. And nice bench and shoulder presses 💪💪💪
Amazing video man, really well made! Nice balance between work and play.
Really enjoyed the video. I've been interested in coding for awhile now and it's great to see a glimpse into the lifestyle. That view at 3am of the city is superb also.
This was dope man, great work! Just started my job here in NYC doing consulting so cool to see a lot of similarities between our lives. Looking forward to more vlogs like this one!
Awesome vlog Matt!! Very inspirational and fun to watch haha 😁
This gotta be one of the best day in life videos I've ever seen so far sheshhhhh 🔥
this is the best/most realistic day in the life video I've seen for software engineers. I think it has the best balance, which is what I want.
I have watched quite a few 'day in the life of a SWE' videos, but this one really stands out. Thank you.
Been having a lot of thought of doing software engineer as a career. This video is giving me motivation lol. Thanks man and keep up the work.
this was actually super fun to watch! Glad to see the fun activities at night !
Great video...the quality is amazing....thanks for sharing Matt :)
The view from your apartment is amazing!
I swear to myself that I will study and work hard to achieve this kind of life. Please upload more of your SE days. It's very inspiring to watch, especially after a long day of coding. I'm still a first year college student hhayss
it's all an illusion; but I guess you need illusions to keep going... those guys at the top are hedonically adapted to their life, same as you now
Wish u good luck bro
me too bro, I want to work for apple at the apple park one day
Just study hard and learn as much Python and JavaScript as you can and you will have this fabulous life, broh
Hows Your study goin?
Just moved to the city as well as a Software Engineer, glad I found your channel!
I wouldn't mind a life like this at all. My current days consist of having a career crises cause I'm so unsure of what I want to do in tech but this fully swayed me. Thank you :) I know it's like 1 day out of many possibly boring/harder ones but the way things are going for me rn, one day of this is enough for a whole year
Me too trying to get from electrician to coder . Now wondering if trying school is good with work only once every 2 week or just better to learn at home and work meanwhile
Ask yourself why you are doing it, if its money you are very very very likely to fail tbh.
@@revoltoff 🧢, money’s a great motivator for me lol
@@notorious7706 Okay then well how far are you with your AI and mastering 6 different languages for that fat 500K a year salary, until you meet scrub. Comments like this show me time and time again why 90% does not “make it” and also why a lot of software for the tools we have today so for this time is pretty crappy. Anyway I cba with this idk why I got this vid in recommended so thanks for the dev that wrote the turn this comment off for notifications LOL.
@@revoltoff Lol the projection is surreal, good luck to you
Love the video bro! Yes yes yes enjoy those moments! Please! Love from Atlanta ga ❤️
Absolutely love this video bro, you really have a life many dream of. I hope when i finish my studies as SE, my life will begin to look like this :)
Cheers, a student from DK!
Tech recruiter from London here. Moving to New York this year with my job and this vid has got me gassed!
Awesome video Matt!!! Keep it up !
75% reading/writing and 25% coding 🤯❤ The best S.E vlog I've watch.
Loved everything! The background music was the icing on the cake fr! Two moons 💯✨😣
Skipping leg day. That's bad bro. Amazing video by the way. Greetings from another software dev based in Colombia!
Living your best life! LETS GO!
Now I am understanding some layoffs
Thanks you so much for this video, it keeps my inspiration high
That's... shockingly accurate for a young professional in NYC.
I'm starting there soon! Great video and superb Joji music choice
you motivated me a lot, thank you.
When I saw the title of your video I was like "ooh...another lonely guy" but...your daily life is much better than other developers working at big companies.
Wow, NYC looks so fun! Night life seems so exciting unlike certain cities on the West Coast. Too bad it’s so cold!
yes but if you are asian there is a high chance that a black man will beat the shit out of you.
Apart from your awesome job at Google and NYC's cityscape, this video is just very well made.
Thank you for giving me motivation while I am coding in the middle of nowhere
Thanks for showing that you have fun and a life. Subbed my friend.
my dream is to be in google in nyc, i can see how its like now. the music makes it better! Thanks man!
Make more vids. I see u don’t post alot so please post more this is mybe the happiest I have ever seen someone and still doing things with their friends even if they are working at a big company.
Banger vid waiting for more videos from you
Love the vlog style of this video.
Meeting with friends, that is wholesome
proud of you! you're awesome!
dang, i love the view from ur place!!
was just gonna leave, but the night view from the apartment in the end reminded me to SLAP the like button
appreciate it my guy
One of the best vlogs I've seen in a while. Will surely try to see this everyday and motivate myself to get into GOOGLE!!!!
What a cool video bro, enjoy your life ! ;)
The quality is really good
cool vid, i loved my times in nyc, it's intense
Great video man!
This is better than my holidays
I work on your floor! Love this video; makes me nostalgic for the pre-pandemic days when I still lived in the city
Nice vid my guy. You’re truly Blessed 😎👍
Keep making these videos!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and wish I was this young and start my life again but this time as a SWE!
whats ur job now
NYC looks lit!
Awesome!🔥
YOUR LIFE IS AMAZING 🤩
hey! you're matthewyangcs, the guy who competed in the digital ultimate typing championship, no? it's awesome to see that you're a google software engineer, esp. since that's a route i plan on taking. congrats!
I am 36 and have been learning Python for 2 years. Now I work as a taxi driver in a small Siberian town. Your life is my goal! thanks for the motivation
I learned Python in 5 hrs youtub video and next week I cracked VMWARE and Altassian interview as Principle SRE. In order to get into Google or even in VMWARE or Altassian or Meta you need to demonstrate more of what you can deliver and innovate of what you already know
as a controls engineer my days are also pretty similar to this except i wake up at 7am, get to work at 8am, stare at excel spreadsheets for 9 hours, go home, eat and then cry myself to sleep
then repeat
im in the same field (mechatronics, controls/PLC programmer). the travel kills me, i had to stop.
Stop crying, just go back to med school, thank me later.
@@ckrgksdkrak lmao no
your window view was awesome!
Dude multitasking in another level , watching three anime at the same moment
I know filming yourself coding isn't very interesting, but honestly this video makes it look like you wake up late, eat and snack all day, go to happy hours, play games and go home.
Keep these videos coming 🫀
Nice video bro!
xdddd WHOA MATT WAITINT FOR THE NEXT VLOG also the gimme code gif 😍😍😍
I discover your channel today, I like your content
keep going, hug from Brazil
Wow, that view from your desk, nice!
Finally, a video of not a boring "day in the life of a software engineer"
Very beautiful sight from your bedroom 🙌🏻
I though I want to work in NY, thank you
I really enjoy it!
the music made this video infinitely better😤
wow the guy dancing at 5:37 has some rad skills
What a glow-up! You look different within 2 years.
Hi Matt - thanks for sharing. Crazy question coming. About your Google office monitor setup. Are those shared desk spaces? Did I see 2ea USB-C cable connections coming from the desk monitors? You just occupy both of your devices ports on your MacBook to get 2 extended screens? My company looking for a way to satisfy the Windows and Mac users in shared spaces to get 2 extended screens without using a dock. Does this work well in your environment?
Holy Moly bro 215 WPM at a 100% accuracy is nuts haha. I strive to be able to type that fast one day!
YOURE SHREDDDEEEDDD HOLYYY GAINS 💪
you're really lucky to be able to achieve all this at 22yro. took me a few years longer to afford to live independently like that.
believe me, I am so appreciative of the unbelievable privilege I have-I have my parents to thank for that
He's definitely lucky, but you can't disregard his hard work to get to where he is! Everyone has given circumstances. It's how you move forward that affects the outcome of your life.
@@GamingManiac1234 not disregarding his hard work at all. this guy has clearly put in the work to get the position he's in now. however, when you're only 22 the things you can point to that are attributable to your success, probably, are rooted in parents, alma mater, and the individual. you need really, REALLY good inputs to "make it" at such an early age, and I'm saying this guy is not only lucky to have had them but had known how to make good use of them. it's a happy thought to think hard work can get you there, but you also need the right environment and persona, as well.
@@irishknightt Definitely and that's what I meant by given circumstances(friends, family, school, etc), but he did good for himself. Currently striving to get into Google within the next few years.
I wouldn't say he's lucky at all, the amount of time and discipline it takes is far beyond luck. There are a ton of people born into advantageous circumstances that don't put in the effort needed to achieve what he has and vice versa. Tbh this is the kind of video I would want to share with middle school and high schoolers to motivate them and prove that if you take school serious early on, it will all pan out for you and here's proof.
finally not a boring A-day-in-my-life as a software engineer.
Amazing!
your room's window view is so sick 😂
bro built different the way he's watching three shows at once
for curious people, he actually left google 1 month after publishing this video, he is actively involved in a startup named 'Stealth'
Aight I see you with those edm shows! Let me join your squad 🤙🏽 I’m graduating this year with CS Degree!
To be honest, this give me motivation to sturdy and work hard. I may be 13 rn but I know we're all going to active what are dreams are
this is awesome and so motivating, my dream is to live in NYC, I will make this happen
That’s awesome 🤩
how long did you debate doing this video after taking the 2 year break from your previous? I always find it inspiring knowing you might have sat on this idea for awhile waiting to execute it not knowing how successful it might end up being
great for everyone to take example from
Your view is insane 😍😍
This is all achievable if you study hard and stay committed to your craft. Lifestyle is achieves through commitment
Very interesting, will consider it
dope stuff fam
your stuff is awesome too
the vibe is amazing, it really makes me wanna work there.. Is the rent expensive compared to what you earn at Google?
Thanks for sharing, good luck
Damn I always dream of life like this, this motivates me to keep working since google is my dream job
Love the wallpaper!! Where do you get it?? And nice video btw
Wooooowww congratulacion men my dream is this ojalá algún día cumplirlo y vivir en New York
so interesting seeing how you guys live ur life versus my life as a college student in nyc lol
This was so good.
Between google and facebook - I’ve never seen software engineers jack around more during the day.
When I watch these it motivates me to replace them. People get complacent and they don't realize there are others waiting to swoop in and grind
