  • Fruitland, Idaho - First leg of National Eucharistic Pilgrimage in Idaho with transfer of Blessed Sacrament to Bishop Peter Christensen from Bishop Liam Cary of the Diocese of Baker, OR.
The following story appeared in the April 12 Idaho Catholic Register.
Corpus Christi Parish in Fruitland is the first stop for the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage (NEP) in Idaho. The Diocese of Baker will formally transfer the NEP monstrance containing the Holy Eucharist to the Diocese of Boise on the border between Oregon and Idaho.
“Before the exchange of the monstrance, Bishop Liam Cary of the Diocese of Baker will bless the pilgrims from Oregon,” said Melea Ulery, director of Religious Education, Catechetical Leadership and Lay Formation for the Diocese of Boise. After Bishop Cary hands the monstrance to Bishop Peter Christensen of the Diocese of Boise, Bishop Peter will bless the pilgrims from Idaho.
The concluding Mass for the NEP in Oregon will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 27, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Ontario. Bishop Cary will preside at the Mass, and Bishop Peter will concelebrate.
After the Mass, the National Pilgrims and the faithful who wish to join them will walk in procession, led by Bishop Cary, to the nearby Oregon-Idaho border. At the border, the Eucharist will be transferred and the blessings will occur.
Bishop Peter will then lead the procession to Corpus Christi Parish in Fruitland, about a mile away.
When the procession arrives at Corpus Christi Parish, Adoration and Benediction will be offered. A social in the church hall will follow.
Buses will be available to shuttle participants from one parish to another. “Participants in Idaho can park their cars at Corpus Christi, and a bus will then take them to Blessed Sacrament in Oregon so they can avoid the two-mile walk both ways,” Ulery said.
The following day, Tuesday, May 28, at 9:00 a.m., Mass will be offered at Corpus Christi for pilgrims and faithful.
Participants are strongly encouraged to register because the procession from Ontario to Corpus Christi will be on Memorial Day. “We need to give the numbers of those who want to participate to the parishes and also to the cities so police escorts and other safety measures can be in place for the procession,” said Ulery.
The Serra Route of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage will begin in San Francisco on Saturday, May 18. The route includes California, Neva-da, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and Illinois. All NEP routes, including the Serra Route, will end in Indianapolis on Wednesday, July 17, for the Eucharistic Congress, which will run until Sunday, July 21.
