  • Luke and Joel Smallbone of For King and Country discuss the story behind their song, “God Only Knows." They offer their thoughts about the roots of teen suicide and the need for greater connection with friends and family members.
Alive to Thrive is a biblical guide to preventing teen suicide. Anyone who interacts with teens can learn how to help prevent suicidal thinking through sound practical and clinical advice, and more importantly, biblical principles that will provide a young person with hope in Christ.
For more information on Alive to Thrive, a FREE resource on suicide prevention from Focus on the Family, go to bit.ly/2m8dbnf.
If you or someone you know has reached this site while in need of immediate crisis help, we recommend you call 9-1-1 or visit your local emergency room for professional medical and mental health assistance. The 24/7 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can also be reached at 1-800-273-8255 or via online chat. This 24/7 line is a referral, and not a service of Focus on the Family.
Once you have made arrangements for medical care for your loved one or spoken with a trained mental health provider and developed a plan for assistance, contact trusted friends, family members and/or pastors so you can receive support and encouragement. Don’t try to cope with this alone.

This song saved me tonite. It's not only for teens.... I am listening to this song over and over again. Depression is an illness and suicide is tragic for families. Listening to this song made me realize I can't put my family through this. I am looking to God.

I Praise our Lord each and everyday because he saved me from my depression on 02/13/2017. I'm a 59 year young still living with it. Its not just a teenage thing.

God Bless you Karen. That's absolutely wonderful to hear how amazing our God is and what he can do when we praise him. I also have a similar thing when God helped me through depression when I was 13 yrs old now I'm 14 and I'm happier than ever.

You are so right! I've been dealing with it for decades. At 60, I'm in a better than I have been in years. You have to love and appreciate yourself first. I found my passion in volunteering for hospice. I get as much out of it, if not more, than the patients and families. So fulfilling!

Luke said it spot on, especially the part about a fatherless generation. The ramifications of children growing up in broken homes is paramount to today's problems. I've always been a single mother trying my best to raise a boy into a young man who is now seventeen years old and despite my efforts to love, nurture and teach him about the love of God, my son is lost, depressed, confused and I don't know where to go from here. Please pray for him, God bless💝

God Only Knows helped my out so much this year. My Father was diagnosed in February, on Valentines Day, with Leukemia. He then found he has a genetic mutation that causes the cancer to grow faster, and gaining remission is so much harder. I spent two months driving back and forth between the hospital and my house, two hours away, and heard this song so many times. I wound up with a blood clot in each lung, due to all the driving, and hospitalized myself. Then I had a cancer scare. I had my gallbladder removed because of a pre-cancerous tumor. This song helped me to remember that, no matter how bad my depression got to me, I wasn't alone. Thank you guys for helping. I hope to see you in Maine soon!

Wonderful open chat of the family value. I was 10 when my parents got divorced in 1955. I knew that when I got married it would be for life I would not any child of mine to experience what I did. Both Mom and Dad did their best but it just wasn’t the same as my friends homes. The love of my life agreed we married 50 years ago. Our Son is married and reading hi son. In a wonderful family. So yes, be a family, live the family life...not just living under the same roof like boarders Live the life of love and commitment . Thank you for this video message.

Father put the need for Him deeply in us. If we don't get Him, we suffer.
Break out from under the spell of social media and TV/movies/music.
The world isnt for us. At all. It only brings despair. There is no real value that it gives. All of your worth comes from your Heavenly Father. Know who you are. Who you really are. Royal and cherished by your Creator.
People last forever. Everything else is false. Love people. But first. Love God.
Hold tight. Courage dear hearts. Jesus is the only Way. He is the TRUTH and He is the Life. And He is for you.

You got it Luke. We often take our failures or our perception of our self-worth, our hatred for ourselves, and turn it against our very lives. It happens to anyone. Thank you to Ben as well for helping make the video that helped me get through wanting to commit suicide. Love you guys and can't wait to see you in Edmonton!

Depression and suicide are caused by spiritual attacks. I know because I struggled with those things and when I went through deliverance, I got free from those things and I no longer have those struggles.

I'm glad that I didn't watch the "God Only Knows" original video, only because, the line-of-sight camera work (like in Cloverfield and a few other films), gives me a killer headache. Otherwise, I love your work. P.S.; My issues don't compare to depression. I've never had it. My teenage affliction was anxiety attacks. Started at 14. In my 20's, my anger about having attacks took over, and I put my stubbornness into action and they stopped.

What really bothers me is the fact that kids don’t really even talk to anyone. That smart phone is rarely used as a phone. The vast majority send texts and never really have a conversation. Many don’t know how to have one.

Don't listen to Him. Listen to what God is telling you while you wait and don't give up. My uncle got married at the age of 52 & what I can say it was really worth the wait, their union was planned by God, they are so happy together.
What I can say is God makes things beautiful at His perfect timing be patient and leant to be happy as you wait, continue working on you and being good stewards of what God has given you.
