Always been a fan of Kung Lao's design, his cool demeanor, and gameplay. Shame this wasn't one of their better releases and just ensures I'll go for MK3 Sub Zero or Reptile.
They dropped the ball on this one. Must have been done by their C-team. I hope this doesn't foretell what their future Street Fighter/Darkstalker figures will look like.

Kung Lao is my favorite character. With this figure, I wholeheartedly agree about the terrible face sculpts and how annoying it is that his tunic doesn't sit flush with the figure. But aside from those issues, which aren't minor, aren't deal breakers for me. I do think that we're owed a 2.0 with vastly improved face sculpts. Do you have any examples of characters with hats done in this scale in a similar style that are executed more successfully?
I had this Kung Lao in my BBTS Pile of Loot for like 75 days, lol. I just couldn't decide if I wanted to commit to getting him. I preordered and was really excited when he was first announced, but then the actual figure came out and I started seeing reviews which led me to question whether or not he was worth all that money. After MANY days going back and forth between wanting and not wanting him, I decided to cancel and put that money towards Kintaro. I like Kung Lao as a character, but in the end, this figure just didn't do it for me. Too bad, 'cause its the only Kung Lao out there.
The criticism on this figure was tuff, the head sculpt isn’t the worst, check out the Unmasked Subzero head Sculpt, but yea this figure is c Tier for the hat Alone. Disappointing but not the worst.
Specially on the paint department. The paint is sloppy asf and it chips off easily. I have no idea what kind of paint they use but for that price point they def need to step their game up.

I agree with the face and hat. I ended up posing mine with his head tilted down and his one hand pinching the edge of the hat to hide most of his face. Shame, but MK2 Kung Lao is my favorite version of him so ultimately no regrets.
If you heat up the hat & warp it you can take away some of the Sombrero-ness. Also if you Google MK2 Kung Lao, the center part is actually kinda comically oversized like the figure, so it's more accurate than I thought. Became more sleek in later games. No excuses for those butt ugly faces though. Also I really love the SCDD extra pieces that came with the tan version. Helped me enjoy this release a bit more.
SC is getting more expensive but the product is looking bad, yes I know the materials for QC is better but just look at this and tell me this is on par with earlier releases. I'm definitively sculpting a head with a hat.

I will agree on face. It is not look like Lao at all. I think quality of the joints degrade as well. In general new figures that I get in last 3 months , storm, mattel, revoltech feels like lower quality compared to before. I guess they put less quality materials or just hurry to release the product. As a collector who pays a lot of money for those I fell kind of abused.

This Figure is probably the biggest disappointment in a long long time. I am a huge Kung Lao Fan and of course Pre-Ordered the Figure on day 1 but even the prototype Pictures showed so many flaws. I canceled this figure a while ago and after seeing this review i think i made the right decision. So sad... and we will see this figure probably 3-4 times in a different color variant.

I love Kung Lao, especially his deadly alliance look. Too bad he's fodder in the story.
He's only fodder since MK9 because of bad storytelling. He is pretty powerful in the Original Trilogy.

same. I had it in my PoL for 2.5 months as well; canceled it and used the credit for the Mafex HUSH Superman, a far superior product.

Definitely their weakest MK release; but it's not horrible, and it's Kung Lao so I got it anyway.
