Yes while using footwork for like doing a basic punch iam not sure that iam actually using my leg or my body to help with the punch, how to know if iam doing it correctly or not.Sorry if i wasted your time while reading this and thanks if you will reply

I wonder do you still do sparrings or fights, and if you do could you maybe film them and post them. I also think it would be really nice for you to make like an analysis type video in wich you re-watch some of the best boxing fights and explain what were the fighters mistakes and what should've they done different to turn the outcome of the match. I also love to see you ratting your fans boxing clips and i wish you made more of those videos...Keep up the good content lad!

How to deal with jabs (single, double+) as an inside fighter or just generally - is it about finding angles, footwork, head movement, etc.

I agree with what u did at the Olympic qualifiers. The whole sport is about hitting and not getting hit. You should do what u need to, to win, it doesn’t matter what other people think

I agree. It's nothing more than tactics, you did what you needed to do to win. This happens in every sport, you see it all the time in football (shutting up shop), especially in 2 leg away goals double situations. Mind you, coming from Sunderland you might not have seen a defence capable of doing that very often 🤣👍

In my opinion, run if you are only interested in winning but don't run too much if you are also interested in being an entertaining fighter to watch. People don't enjoy it that much, and boxing is supposed to also be entertaining since people pay to watch.

If your ahead on points and decide to dance through the remaining rounds, that is a strategy, it is up to your opponent to counter that and get back in the fight or lose the decision.

I don't think it's cowardly, it is a strategic skill, sadly its not always judged as so and doesn't always work to your advantage when it comes to scoring, I'm reminded of Dela Hoya vs Trinidad he out boxed him and danced for the last 3 rounds, thought he had the fight but lost, think if he'd engaged more in those rounds he'd of won. First defence in most MA is don't be there! Just discovered your vids, brilliant... Thank you

Wonderful video bro. Can you make one with the same approach but a follow along version? It'll be easier to just watch and perform instead of pausing and pressing forward and backward every few seconds.
You can make beginner and advanced versions. Just make em follow along.
Also please add more moves to create angles.

*I 100% agree that fighters should use footwork to move away in the LAST round.* If a fighter is up 6 rounds to 0, and then runs for 6 rounds, I think that’s not okay. But if it’s the last 1-2 rounds then that’s fine.

I agree yes it’s frowned upon but at the end of the day boxing is a sport not a street fight and the risk to reward of standing toe to toe and getting caught with something silly while your ahead is crazy why would you do that. Stick and move got em hurt capitalize if your hurt survive move around clinch. All legal in the sport of boxing . An I’m saying this born and raised in Chicago. I do and did the same when I was competing or training.

  • @gks554

I'm using this when i begin my training on Monday. I've made my own training routine... book essentially. I've merged my boxing routine with my basketball vertical jump training, found a way. Nothing is impossible as they say. It has EVERYTHING I need to enhance my training to a high degree. I'm new to boxing so, this should be interesting. I can punch, I have punched before lol. What I mean is I have not taken boxing that serious until now. Things change, what can I say. I'm a 20 year old hoping to be a great boxer someday, which I'm certain will be due to my hard work and dedicated mindset, always been that way. Just the way I am.
I don't want anybody to wish me luck. I dont believe in "luck" anyway. I just want to show that it's never too late, and that anybody can be whom ever they ought to be IF they just stick to it. Simple as pie. Don't stop, EVEN when you had enough, because if you really loved the sport... you would NEVER have enough. Strive to win. I know I am.
See you at the gym. 👊🏻

I dont care about the pride and ego aspect of running away to win a boxing match. I care more about it's validity for getting the win. Especially in boxing where you can get highly questionable decisions and robberies. Running away is putting the match in the judges hands, not your own.

As an American drawing out the battle while you are in the lead is common. This happens all the time in American football when they are trying to run out the clock by stalling. A win is a win. It isn’t the most exciting but it’s definitely common place in sports.

I consider your tactics fair. Boxing is a sport. In a sport we must use tactics and our brain first and foremost. So not engaging in order to get the best result for you is tactics. If your oponent has slow feet then using your feet as defense is a great tactic to tire him and make him frustrated. Whoever says that your defense and your strategy is cowardish needs to think again.
For example, if I have an oponent who has great body shots and is taller than me , I need to play with my chin very low and using my body moves left and right to avoid the body shots and attack from the low with uppercuts and hooks, without using my cross and jab so much because I risk my game against a good body shot boxer. So this is a tactic. Also what you did is a tactic, fair, and you exploited your strength (fast feet) and your opponents weakness.
Thanks for your impressive and detailed videos. I train myself using your videos, mainly for fitness purposes, and from every boxing youtuber you stand out for your athletic spirit, your kindness and knowledge and also for your badass British accent! Love you Tony! Keep it up!

With regards to your question, I think there is a balance. If you know you're up going into the final round, then I think its a valid tactic to switch to a more defensive style, however I dont mean running away, I think you should still be showing your skill, cause the fighter to miss shots, set up counter punches of your own, but avoid taking any big risks.

No argument there bro but even the best technique needs good footwork to get you Into range to land it and then out of harms way to avoid taking too much damage from ur opponents returns....Fast hands, beautiful execution and lots of power are only gonna help
you win if it can be delivered and applied.....footwork IS a part of ones technical skill, not something separate from it...Pretty sure you get that..my comment was more for people who may have thought otherwise....no offense meant.

4:02 in my opinion if you do this you’re not confident in yourself. Imagine winning by a landslide 30 points instead of 8 that would feel much better knowing that you dominated the whole time or imagine you cheated yourself out of a spectacular knock out because you didn’t keep putting on the pressure. I agree that it’s fine to do what you have to do to win but I think you cheat yourself out of opportunities or an even better win.

It isn’t fun to watch someone evade to win, but it’s laughable to think any legal action performed in A FIGHT in front of an AUDIENCE is cowardly. Just getting in there take serious balls.

Fantastic Tony! Thank you so much. I'll teach my boxing partner your footwork drills tomorrow. If you'd ever be interested, I'd be forever grateful if you could teach how to punch with the pendulum step in different directions. I realize that this is more Soviet school (Bivol), but I like it so much.

Yes. Dance if you're up last minute. It's a part of boxing. Ppl say Mayweather ran, but those same ppl think boxing is just punching it out. Basketball players hold the ball when they're up last minute. Football players kneel. Etc.

So your question hit home for me. I actually used this exact tactic in my first boxing match. I was positive I had the guy so I just stayed away from him in the final round and just tired him out. It worked like a charm. Of course I was wiped too from keeping the distance between us too long to engage. In the end the guy actually beat me. My recommendation, stay engaged. It's easy when your in there to be like yeah I'm doing it and I'm beating this guy while I'm doing it. But the judges may not see it your way. So do EVERYTHING possible to dictate the outcome. That the old proverb, never leave it in the judges hands? That's a real philosophy I fully believe in.

    Great video, much appreciated.
At 24:00 stepping back with the one two; do you step your lead foot back with the one, and your rear leg back with the two. Or is it the other way round, or does it matter? Thanks.

Watch Canelo's feet in his fight against Bivol. I think Bivol won mostly because his feet were better than Canelo's (Note that Canelo is my 2nd favorite fighter after Usyk). Canelo constantly makes the mistake you talk about at 16:00 (not just against Bivol). Combine that error with Bivol's fast hands and feet, and that was the fight right there. Bivol in and out scoring with his jab and sometimes 1-2. Canelo getting caught (literally) flat-footed.

Anyone who criticized you for doing that last round doesn't understand respecting your opponent in boxing. If you're up, no reason risking damage or potentially the entire match that you clearly worked hard to take lead of. It's not necessarily EASY to "run" for a full round when going against aggressive opponents either 🤷‍♂️ Work smarter not harder, right 💪

In sports Olympic boxing, If you're ahead in points, in the final round, move around to avoid your opponent from attacking you. I don't think its a coward move, that's playing smart.

I have a question for you. I Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Judo for about 10 years. I quit because my knee caps didn't stay in. It was depressing but now I just want to train. Surgery is not an option. My legs are what I want to work on first to start getting rid of this fat. Have any suggestions on what won't obliterate my knees as far as footwork goes? Knee Caps can slide on a dime so quick cutting action aren't an option.

4:05 On "running"... My answer is it depends on your art. Who are you as a boxer? Contrast the two men who had the best records ever in the sport: I would be just as disappointed if a boxer like Floyd Mayweather charged forward at his opponent in the last round looking for a KO when he was ahead, as if Rocky Marciano danced around looking to slip and evade. I watch Floyd to watch him not get hit and I watch Rocky to watch unstoppable heart and a devastating overhand.

When it comes to fight sports like boxing and MMA, the least amount of damage you can take, the better. Making your opponent chase you because they're behind on the score cards is a smart play. It saves you from taking more damage and it opens them up to make mistakes that you can counter and capitalize on. This isn't a street fight, it's about longevity and saving your head from things like CTE

Completely within your rights to do what you did in the Olympic Qualifiers, Tony (about 4 minutes in this video), and it was a very sensible thing to do from your point of view: why would you even want to risk throwing the lead away, or worse in a sport like boxing, getting hurt unnecessarily?
It might not be the most exciting strategy for the spectators in the final round, but you have already done the hard work to be 8 points up.
In any other sport, it is simply referred to as "game management" and avoiding taking silly risks - no different to a rugby team repeatedly taking tackles to recycle the ball via a ruck while not attempting to make any ground or a football team heading for the corner flag in the last 5 minutes when they're 2-1 up. Your priority as a top level competitive athlete is to give your all to get the result you want, not to put on an exhibition for the crowd

@Tony Jeffries when I started to boxing I was dodging punches like the matrix baby so don’t feel bad about using foot work to win. I do it to not get hit. Winning is Winning like torreto said. But if it was me now with experience I would take it to him and wouldn’t let That basted breath. I appreciate your videos bother 💪🥊

  • @godofm3tal1

I think fighters should fight. I don't like the idea of playing the numbers game and working the rules to secure a cheap win. That's what Mayweather did and it's why anyone serious about watching boxing didn't like him much. He worked the score cards. That said, it's a failing of the system and how the sport is judged. Exploit it until they fix it if you really want to win.
I think an opponent running around the ring visibly being elusive and not engaging should get points deducted for conceding the round to his opponent. This would keep the ring honest and fighters fighting.

As far as Running around the ring that depends on the opponent, if they are "Bigger" than you absolutely use your maneuverability and agility and get then to wear themselves out. However, if they are the same size, weight, and muscle mass it's a personal choice. Bottom line is be adaptable!!!

  • @stephenmonash821

Cowardice does not factor into smart boxing. Running - more aptly moving and evading is entirely appropriate. It is integral to defense. Just how judges would score it though.. would seem they favor punches landed. Well.. balance.. it you evade you stop the opponents tally of hits. Perhaps - hit and run.. float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Yeah.. if you are aware you are ahead in the score.. why not. There is a risk too.. that the opponent has one good flurry and you are not active as they say.. you have left it to the judges. Balance is key...do what comes naturally.. do what you have done.. have confidence.. and if you are a little savvy run down the clock.
