Today we will compare these two phenomenal fighter jets in this hypothetical matchup, and determine which fighter jet is better in a real battlefield.
    1. Performance
Both aircraft have multiple variants for airforce and navy but we will compare F-35A with Rafale C. F-35 was first introduced in 2015. Around 570 jets of all variants have been built so far with per unit cost of $78M for F-35a. Operated by a crew of 1, the Aircraft can take-off with a maximum weight of 70,000Ib. The jet is powered by a Pratt & Whitney turbofan engine capable of producing 43,000 pounds of thrust. The engine can push the aircraft at a top speed of 1,227mph. With a maximum range of 1,700mi, the jet can combat within a radius of 870mi. The climb rate of F-35 is classified; the aircraft can reach a maximum altitude of 50,000ft and still operational.
On the other hand, Rafale was first rolled out in 2001. Around 201 jets have been built so far with per unit cost of $77M. Operated by a crew of 1, the aircraft can take-off with a maximum weight of 54,000Ib. The aircraft is powered by a pair of turbofan engines generating 34,000 pounds of thrust combined. With the help of these engines, the aircraft can travel with a top speed of 1,381mph. With ferry range of 2,300mi, the jet can combat within a radius of 1,150mi. With a climb rate of 1,000 ft/sec, the service ceiling of Rafale is 50,000ft.
    2. Maneuverability
With smaller wings and inferior thrust to weight ratio, the early F-35 pilots found it nearly impossible to even engage with F-16. Lockheed Martin worked with pilots training and changed the configuration of the jet…
In contrast, Rafale has lead in this category. The aircraft has 9 Gs maneuverability with a high angle of attack. Canard wings are used to improve maneuverability further. The aircraft is aerodynamically clean with two wingtip missiles…
    3. Stealth
The F-35 has been designed to have a lower radar cross-section with the help of aircraft shape and the use of stealthy radar absorbent materials. The stealth capabilities in the F-35 are unprecedented in military aviation. For perspective, F-35’s radar cross-section is 0.005 m2, which is about the size of a golf ball.
On the contrary, the Rafale is not a full-aspect stealth aircraft. However, the jet was designed for a reduced radar cross-section ranging from 0.5 to 2 m2…
    4. Radar & Avionics
F-35 is equipped with AN/APG-81 radar capable of tracking at over 143mi can lock its target as far as 93mi. The aircraft is equipped with a Distributed Aperture and Electro-optical targeting system...
On the other side, Rafale is equipped with passive electronically scanned multi-mode radar. This is capable to achieve an increased level of situational awareness through earlier target detection. The radar projects real-time 3D maps for terrain-following and high-resolution ground maps for navigation and targeting. The radar can detect and engage a target at a range of 90mi.
    5. Firepower
F-35 is armed with an internally mounted 25mm equalizer gun with 180 rounds in addition to an external pod with extra rounds. The aircraft has two internal weapon bays and 6 external hardpoints for carrying 8 tons of weapon payload. The two outer hardpoints can carry sidewinder and short-range air to air missiles…
On the other hand, the Rafale can carry weapon payloads of more than 9.5 tons on its 14 hardpoints. The range of weapons includes air to air, air to ground, air to sea, guided and unguided bombs. For a strategic mission, the jet can deliver Storm Shadow standoff nuclear missile. The aircraft can also carry Meteor beyond visual range air to air missiles…

Well another point not mentionned in the video is that the Rafale was deployed in operation in 2002 when the F35 deployed in 2015 and first saw combat in 2018.
And as such Rafale had plenty of time to fix his first problems and mature while F35 is still a very recent, "newborn" plane, with unfortunately quite a few problems following its launch, it may take some time to catch up to his full maturity.
But seeing recent investments (Everyone seems to direct towards F35 including Germany and Switzerland, our closest neighboors and since Germany previously used Eurofighters it's a pretty big deal) I'd say that F35 probably has a few aces up his sleeve that we don't hear about.
Probably long distance engagements and electronic warfare / capabilities will be the way to go in the near future. We'll see how Dassault will respond to that, maybe with our next french aircraft ? Let's wait and see 🤷‍♂️

Weapons purchases aren't all about capability. They are about politics, capabilities, costs, defense contractor reputation, manufacturing capabilities and maintenance contracts that go out decades.
Lockheed just has a much bigger footprint in the defense contracting world, a larger budget, greater manufacturing capabilities and the F-35 is sold to more nations meaning that whoever buys F-35s has access to a larger pool of specialists who know how to work on the plane, a greater pool of spare parts and a manufacturer who has more resources to design, develop, test and manufacture whatever changes you may need in the future.

Nice video. Non-biased which is rare today.
It is pretty acurate except that it misses a couple of elements that are pretty important and would play in the final assessment of the Rafale's capability. Also it compares the Rafale mixing the C variant and some of the F3 evolution . (Yes, the aircraft keeps being upgraded to the latest standards and F4 upgrade standard is already planned and developped) So I will put my remarks at the Rafale C F3 revision level.
First point indicated as advantage to the F35 is its ability to collect and exchange data between planes and create an image of the battlefield. Well, it is done using the encrypted Tactical Data Link named L16 which is ALSO available on the Rafale since the C version and has been validated in NATO level exercise.
The second element overlooked is the Rafale's capacity (Native on C) to fire a missile on a plane targeted by another plane such as an awacs, which France does have . This is important as american drills have shown that trained awacs crew were capable of detecting and targeting F35s.
Another fact is that although still classified, the upgraded Rafale protection package and counter measures would allow it to avoid or survive one to two missiles fired to it allowing the Rafale to detect the firing plane and retaliate at once and to close the distance. (Confirmed and increased at F3 level)
Scalp G stealth missile better known as Storm Shadow is available from the F2 revision only.Older Rafale versions use the APACHE SLAM missile.
The last point is an error in the Storm Shadow description. It is a SLAM but not nuclear tipped. it delivers a 450Kg (~990 pounds) multi-stage conventional warhead. In the nuclear deterrent role, the Rafale F3 use the ASMPA which is the latest variant of France's pre strategic missile. It carries a 300+ kt nuclear warhead at 500+ Km. it is carried by both Rafale Air and Navy.
The only clear conclusion that can be really made is not which aircraft can beat the other. First because they are built to work together and also because neither are sold to countries that are likely to find themselves against each other.
The one conlusion is that they reflect the national doctrine :
The F35 big cost is on stealth and engagement avoidance until it is too late for the other to react.
The Rafale's cost is on ruggedness and survivability.
The USA engage their Air Force after enemy air defenses and air bases have been attacked and minimized by Cruise missile attacks and stealth bomber attacks.
France sends armed Rafale to take everyone out.

Actually, no. What most engagements have found with Dual Engine fighter jets is that when one fails, it usually does so pretty catastrophically, and then goes on to damage a lot of equipment for the second jet engine, rendering it nearly useless as well. Also, Maintenance for dual jet aircraft is like having two engines in your car. Two extra lunks of steel to maintain on the ground. Single jet engine craft have proven to show a lot more reliability mostly because the advantage of Dual engine jet aircraft only gives a marginal advantage in combat durability.
In essence, two engines, two things that can go wrong, more complexity.

@@sumott497 well, what I said about that jaguar returning to the base with only one engine is true.
While having 2 is usually more expensive and hard to maintain, this proved that in some cases you could have one engine be damaged to the point of not working and the other still working.
Also, in general, even if not engaged by an enemy, having 2 engines allow you to still return to allied soil if one of them has a malfunction, which generally won’t affect the other.
There has, in the past 10-15 years, been several f35 lost at seas for exemple most probably because they lost their engine. Having a second one might have saved a few.
And in this exemple you can’t say that a 1 engine suit makes the f35 cheaper than a two engine jet. While the f35 is a gen 5 in another level with the gen 4.5 rafale for exemple, the f35 has usually worse caracteristics in every point except stealth (and maybe electronics ? But we don’t know that much in this case, so I won’t be definite on that point). And the f35 is much, much more expensive than a rafale. Does that mean that stealth is worth the price ? Well, I guess the futur should show us, but I’m pretty sure I could say the same thing you said about twin engines but for stealth technologies.

The Harrier... Don't even get me started how many crashed and burned.

I have to disagree. The UK already has a Rafale type aircraft, in the Typhoon. The F35 is providing a different sort of capability, which the UK hasn't has before, stealth.
Not having stealth in your arsenal is a handicap.

    • @DC2022
      @DC2022 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@johnsmith-wv4jw Well, Rafale and Typhoon have in common only the fact they have two engines and two wings. Even canards are not the same since they don't provide the same function. Typhoon is an high altitude high speed interceptor they tweaked to be a mediocre mud mover, lacking AESA radar and with basic electronic warfare systems. Rafale is a polyvalent fighter who shines especially in low altitude penetration and A2G fitted with one of the most powerful EWS actually in service on an aircraft and has naval version.
Oh, and it doesn't shoot itself like F-35, it can fly near storms, doesn't asphyxiate its pilots, doesn't overheat forcing to fly with open bays, can aim without bugs, doesn't melt flying deck, cost 50% less in maintenance, is more maneuverable, is actually less visible in IR on 360° thanks to the F135 and its bays and while of course having bigger RCS, it still can operate in stealth operation due to its design and its sensors, able to detect targets on passive mode, targetting them and sending payload without active sensor activated, only passing on the payload onboard seeker when reaching the NEZ. If the target doesn't detect the missile being launched (and all airplanes, stealth or not are on the same boat with that since MAWS don't care about the plane who launches the missile it can detect), that's a end of the day for it Meteor and Mica being far more dangerous than AMRAAM in terminal efficiency with a larger NEZ and a better chance to hit the target in a GTFO maneuver.
The plane is so shitty that even the USAF don't want it.

    • @johnsmith-wv4jw
      @johnsmith-wv4jw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@DC2022 There is very little to choose between the Rafale and Typhoon in the real world. Don't believe French propaganda in this area. As for AESA radar, Typhoons are being upgraded with it and customers can order it if they really want it.
The Rafale is not a stealth aircraft and EW doesn't make up for that. Otherwise why are the French developing a 5th generation stealth aircraft of their own? If they can use the budget ew option, why develop stealth tech?
The F35 is not a failure, for the simple reason it is having vast amounts of American money thrown at it. Sure they had to make compromises to make it a stealth aircraft and some of its more advanced systems are having teething troubles but that is true of all advanced combat aircraft programs.
There is no point comparing the F35 and Rafale because they are designed to operate in different ways. The point of an F35, in air to air mode, is to detect opponent first and engage them first. It isn't designed to get involved in a close range dogfight with Rafales.
Neither does it have to, the Americans have their teen series fighters and F22 for that. The RAF has the Typhoon.
The reality is, there is a hole in French capabilities, which will be there till there next gen stealth aircraft is in service.

Development costs are about the same as well, since there are a few Rafale variants, including one for carrier-borne operations (Rafale M), which should be compared with the F-35C. The problems, drawbacks and performances of the Rafale and F-35s are well known.
For the Rafale, it's mainly the length of the money gathering that is clearly the top 1 hindrance. It took years to have enough money to even start the previewed evolutions (active helmets, 360° radar coverage, etc...). So it takes time but the plane is good, it has no real technical problem and is actively developped ... as long as the engineers are paid !
The main force and domaine of expertise of the F-35 is stealth. It is extremely difficult to spot and target at long distances. Even with AWACS cover and guidance, intercepting a F-35 patrol is incredibly hard, except for certain types of radars of course. This problems disappear when AM defenses of the Rafale detects incoming missiles... Or the AWACS of course, because opening a bay to fire is everything but stealth.
That is also the Achille's heel of the plane. To have enough munitions to carry on multiple missions on one flight, it has to carry weapons on external pods under the wings. What is the stealthiness of bombs and reservoirs under the wings ???
But the main drawback of the F-35 is its cost and its high technicity. This plane should have been able to replace F-16 in a light multirole fighter. But its price is 4 times heavier, it is quite a nightmare to maintain, and what about the use in harsh conditions of real fighting (sand and dust for example like in deserts). Does its "magical" stealth coating will resist ?
I'm definitely sure that TODAY the Rafale is battle-ready and far more efficient than the F-35. But i'm alos sure that, with the amount of money thrown away for the F-35 program, the plane will be fine with a few more years of developpement. See you in 10 years !

My understanding is .... the F35 stealth feature of "golf-ball" cross section is maintained as long as the internal weapons are the only weapons used. I heard the stealth advantage reduces notably when external weapons are added on the wings. In addition, I heard the semi-stealth of Rafael should not be understated in addition to its stealth tools which are said to be classified. The only thing the F-35 has over the Rafale is internal bay and it comes at a cost the F-35 pays everywhere else. Sure the AN/AGP-81 si more powerful than the RBE2 AA and AESA, but you know what? It is not as stealth as the F-35 but that's a damn sneaky bastard nevertheless and it has SPECTRA to detect the powerful radars and triangulate their position and then shoot silently a METEOR or rely the target position to another Rafale/plateform to let them do the killing shot.
And doing this, the Rafale will not asphyxiate its pilot, lose its coating because it spent over 1 minute over mach 1, crash its ownboard computer, overheat, or fries its electronic due to ESD. The Rafale has stealth features, but not the ones above. Or it has not been officially unveiled yet. Hello, I am French and I want to thank you for your video. Based on data from your videos alone, I think the F-35 would be the winner in a fight to the death against the Rafale, but that doesn't mean the F-35 is better than the Rafale or vice versa.
Each of these planes was designed to serve a specific purpose. I think the main thing is whether these planes both meet the objectives assigned to them.
If from the start the French engineers had the task of designing an aircraft capable of destroying American fighter jets, perhaps today the Rafale would outclass the F-35 or not?
When the plane was designed, there was never (in my opinion) any question of waging war on the United States. The United States is not an immediate threat to France but a solid partner
These planes appear to be of relatively similar strength, and that's a good thing.
What ensures peace in the world is not to be strong or stronger than others, but that there are sufficiently homogeneous power relations.
this explains why nervousness arises when a country begins to mobilize soldiers, move troops, etc. because that is already enough to considerably modify the balance of power.
The first moments of a war are crucial, missing the start of a war led by surprise by the enemy can be catastrophic for the victim of this aggression because they are not necessarily prepared to absorb the shock or to counter-attack. . .
imagine then that a country is already considerably ahead of military technology compared to its neighbor without having moved any army or mobilizing any citizen ....
The important thing is to know how to understand for yourself (your camp) and your potential adversary that a mutual war would be of no interest so there is a greater chance that everyone will stay at home.

It depends on what you want. In terms of avionics, the Rafale is superior, it's just more agile, faster, has more range, and is just generally more capable as a flying machine, and by quite a gap. It's like comparing a race car to an SUV. In a direct dog fight (which doesn't happen that often in modern air combat, but still, it's a possibility) the F35 would have no chance against a Rafale, since the Rafale could literally run circles around the F35.
If you need to destroy stuff, the Rafale is superior too, because it can carry more firepower for close and distant targets wherever they are. But in terms of situational awareness, the F35 has more modern sensor tech and integration with sensors from other units of the military, so it would be harder to detect it and the F35 would have an easier time of taking down enemy targets before they know what hit them.
So individually in isolation, the Rafale is definitely a better fighter jet, but as a group of jets or integrated with other military units during a mission, the F35 would make up for what it lacks in other areas by using superior stealth and integration and bridge the gap. But that's still just a theory, since the F35's ability is not proven in the real world, while the Rafale has shown how capable it is many times.
Still, for how much money was put into the F35 project and considering it's essentially 15-20 years newer than the Rafale depending on how you look at it (Rafale first flight 1986, officially in military 2001, while F35 first flight 2006, officially in military 2012), it's hard to look at it as anything other than a bit of a disappointment. Imagine what Dassault would have come up with if they had the same budget available while developing the Rafale.

@@XavierLeFrancais maintenance costs come down each year as maintainers learn how to be more efficient. Stealth fighters are always going to be harder to maintain because they are more advanced. This is normal for new fighter jets, especially 5th gen. The cost per unit is still inexcusable however, but a large part of that is the political engineering required to get senators to sign off on the jets

      Not anymore in today's world.
A low hour pilot with good training is superior to a high hr pilot in an inferior fighter.
      Examples:
Chinese PLAAF sent their best pilots in Su-27SK against Royal Thai Air Force Gripen C/D in Falcon Strike, 2015.
In BVR, Gripen with its very small RCS, better radar, longer range AIM-120C, and superior pilot interface resulted in extremely heavy losses for Su-27SK.
Now once they let the exercises progress to WVR, the Su-27SK raped the Gripen because it out-maneuvers it easily, and had more WEZ envelope with the helmet-cued HOBS missiles.
But that didn't really matter if they can't make it to the merge.
Frustrated, the Chinese brought their J-10 fighters, and later J-10Cs with smaller RCS, big AESA radar, and very long range PL-15 missiles and erased all of the Gripen's advantages in BVR, while still easily defeating it in WVR again.
Now if you could make a fighter that had an even smaller RCS, give it better sensors, better pilot interface, and better weapons, a less experienced pilot will have an even greater advantage, regardless of the experience of his adversaries.

From my mechanical engineer perspective, that I also have LT colonels with PhD (science of advance materials) in college, teaching me interesting military stuff, I must address the big elephant in the room:
The F35 is a stealth fighter, for strike first and get out fast with low chances of being detected, now in the other hand the Dassault Rafale is a dog fighter with some adaptability properties, it looks more like a jet design for when you all ready has been spotted and you now the fight is one against all odes.
In my opinion both jet fighters are excellent but for different missions and different scenarios, I think that the F35 would surpass the Rafale in a secret operation to destroy enemies defense and electronic countermeasure, meanwhile the Rafale would surpass the F35 in a classic big air operation against an invasion.
